Work Text:
The first thing Chuuya hears in the morning is knocking on the door and shushed giggles.
He cracks one eye open, looking at the opposite side of the room at Dazai who mumbles something in his sleep.
Chuuya sighs heavily. It's today. The overly sweet, romantic day for everyone... And normally he wouldn't really care for it, but he promised himself that today is the day.
Today he's going to do it.
He opens the doors to their room and with a grimace sees two boxes of chocolate and a teddy bear with a red, obnoxious heart. Gathering it all from the floor, he closes the door with his heel.
Without even looking at the cards and notes attached, he drops them on Dazai's chest, making the boy wake up with a strained cough.
"Haa? You have to be that aggressive first thing in the morning?".
Chuuya's heart skips a beat upon seeing Dazai like that. Barely awake, rubbing his eyes with his hair sticking in every direction. His hand itches to move his fingers through the mop of brown hair.
And it's even worse because he knows that it's not the first time he sees Dazai like that.
They grew up together. The number of sleepovers they had together, arguments, and bruised knees or black eyes can be counted in hundreds. And now? They share a dorm room because they decided that it's going to be easier than being given random strangers, especially with Dazai's ego and Chuuya's short temper.
So when Chuuya realized that he was attracted to not only girls but men as well... it wasn't that bad. But the horrifying moment when he caught himself staring at Dazai's lips, at his hands, or wanting to either punch him or throw up every time Dazai genuinely smiled at him..?
That was something Chuuya wasn't ready to feel.
"Wake up, shithead... It's your favorite day of the year. Your ego can be pumped even more by all these naive girls".
"Awww, is Chuuya jealous?" he hears in return and flips him off. "Is Chuuya worried that he's going to be left with no valentine?".
"I really hope that one of these chocolates is poisoned," he says while not looking at him.
It's when he packs his gym bag, Dazai calls his name.
In the air, he catches heart-shaped chocolate. It's from one of the two boxes Dazai already got.
"Ne, Chuuya~" the only sign that Chuuya is listening to him is a low hum. "I think that I should be generous enough and see you after practice anyway, ne? It's not like you're going to have a valentine yourself. Only a mad man would put up with such an annoying chibi".
He shouldn't overthink it, right? It's their small thing. Twice a week, after Chuuya's volleyball practice, they go out for dinner, coffee, arcade, or just a stroll through the supermarket to buy frozen pizza. They do /something/, to not let the routine drain them and bore (especially Dazai) to death.
"Let's be real, you're only saying that because it's my turn to pay" he finally answers licking the chocolate off of his thumb.
He doesn't see how Dazai's eyes focus on it, nor how he shifts on his bed.
"Aah~ Chuuya knows me so well".
---
Chuuya never thought that leaving the changing room would be unnerving. On top of his gym bag, hidden only by his sweater, lays a box of red and pink macarons.
He's the last to leave the building, going towards their meeting point.
But Dazai isn't sitting on their bench. He's standing and talking with a girl.
Chuuya slows down, not being able to look away. She gives him something. Probably another gift.
Dazai will tell her that he's taken for the night, right? He has to... right?
He takes a few more steps, wanting to call for him.
With heart in his throat, he looks at how her hands are now on his shoulders. How she gets on her tiptoes, how she moves closer and kisses him.
One, two, three seconds, until Dazai's lips move in unison and...
The sound of his bag hitting the ground is loud enough for the couple to turn their heads.
There's something wet on Chuuya's face.
Leaving the bag on the ground he just sprints back to the building, choking on sobs that are trying to escape his throat. Blinking fast to get rid of the tears, but just making it worse, because every time he closes his eyes it's them. It's this girl kissing Dazai when this evening was supposed to be theirs.
He slides down to sit on the ground.
How ridiculous he is for even thinking about the possibility of... of them and Dazai ever...
He could /never/...
"Chuuya? Hey, what happened? You ran as if you saw a ghost and..."
"Fuck off, Dazai," he says not even recognizing his voice. It's heavy with anger and disappointment, hanging in the air before he continues. "Go back to her. Have a Valentine's Day. Kiss, fuck, whatever you two want to do".
Dazai crouches in front of him, making Chuuya press his back up the wall. And then Dazai says something so stupid, that Chuuya's brains shortcut. He /laughs/.
"Chibi, have you seen my face?! As if you wouldn't kiss me yourself! ".
"That's the thing, you idiot! I would!".
The silence is daunting. When Chuuya decides to look at Dazai, breathing heavily, tears still pricking his eyes, he sees his best friend owlishly looking at him.
"...what?".
And by now it just doesn't make sense to pretend, right? He already made a fool of himself he can continue this circus special.
"You heard me, stupid. I said I would kiss you. I would do it today and every other fucking day. I hate you and your stupid smile and teasing and ego that is too big for our dorm room, but every time you look at me I--".
He can't finish. There's a pair of soft, warm lips pressed right to his. Confused, he parts his lips and the shiver rolls down his spine when he feels Dazai's tongue.
"Wha-- what are you--" he gasps, but his hands are already in Dazai's hair.
"You're so fucking stupid" he hears instead and he would swear the other is smiling, by the way, his lips curl with another kiss. And another, and one more, until his lips are numb and reddened and they're both short of breath. "I said it in the morning... only a mad man would put up with such a menace...".
"Does that mean...".
"I'm stuck with a chibi" Dazai sighs, his hand landing on Chuuya's cheek. His thumb moves over the constellation of freckles. "But you decided to be so dramatic so I have to ask... will you be my valentine?".
The way he lunges forward, crashing their lips together is enough of an answer.
