Chapter Text

“Hey! Hey! Look at me!” All I could hear were the wails and sobs from the enforcer before me. Hands on her cheeks, I tried my best to comfort her, gently rubbing her cheek with my thumb. I took a few deep breaths, ushering her to copy me. Ignoring me, she squeezed her eyes shut and leaned into my hands, yelling loudly in what seemed to be a never ending agony. Why? Why did she do this? I don’t understand, why? I took Caitlyn into my arms, hugging her tightly as I rest my head on her shoulder. She sobbed into me, burying her face into my neck, her tears running down onto my shoulder and turning the pleather of my jacket a darker shade of red.

A while had passed, Cait’s sobs beginning to quieten down and instead becoming occasional sniffles. I pulled my head back to look at her, to no avail; Caitlyn kept her face hidden into my neck, gripping the back of my jacket.
“Okay…” I moved back to where I was previously, gently rubbing her back. “How you feeling…?” I kept my voice quiet, staring at the headboard of her bed as I awaited a response I was fully expecting.
“How am I feeling?” She let out a pained laugh in response before letting go of me, running her hands down my arms and grabbing my lower arms tightly, digging her nails in sharply. “How am I fucking feeling?”
“Cait-“
“Oh yeah, Vi, I’m doing fucking amazing! I just watched my mother and Jayce get blown up by your crazy fucking sister!”
I stared at her, biting my tongue as I moved my arms away. She noticed her grip and promptly let go, going quiet. “Sorry. A lot… a lot went on… I’m… I could be a lot better…” She let out another pained laugh. I hesitantly placed my hand back on her cheek to which she leaned into, looking into my eyes.

“You have nice eyes…”
“…Huh…?” Her face lightly flushed, her eyebrows raising at the sudden compliment.
“Did I say that out loud?” I let the sides of my mouth slightly curl up, grinning sarcastically as I rubbed her cheek with my thumb yet again. She let out a half hearted chuckle as she placed her hand on top of mine, looking down.

It wasn’t long before she fell onto her back, staring at her ceiling in silence. I quietly joined her, resting my hands behind my head and trying to make out any shapes in the ceiling that could vividly represent anything.
“We have to be up early tomorrow.”
“Why?” I turned my head to look at her as I took in another deep breath, my hair falling over my eyes.
“I have a lot I want to do…” She replied quietly, reaching out to brush my hair behind my ear gently. Her hands are so soft. Lightly smiling, I turned back to the ceiling and tilted my head back, closing my eyes and listened for any sounds. Cait’s breathing… that’s about it. She was out in seconds, curled up on the bed beside me, her arms being used as a pillow. I reached out and took the bed covers, pulling them over her and tucking them under, shuffling myself in a way where I wasn’t too close but not too far away either in case she needed me. Does she really need me? I stared at her for a while, just quietly observing her in the red lit room from the blood coloured moon outside. What a fitting colour.

Morning rolled around not long after we fell asleep. I turned over, stretching with a groan to find that Caitlyn was gone and I was the one under the covers. I looked around the room, squinting in the sunlight beaming through the window, spotting my jacket hung up on a coat hanger hooked to the handle of the bedroom door. Where did she go?

“… Cait?”
