Kel has always been a dog person. Still, chasing down Hector in the middle of a rain storm was not how he'd planned to spend his afternoon. He just wanted to get out of the house, was that so much to ask? The basketball courts were too slippery to use safely, so walking the dog was the next best excuse he had. Hector did need to be walked! He just didn’t expect it to go so badly! You loosen your grip on the leash one time and boom, tiny dude makes a run for it.
Kel’s sneakers pounded against the wet pavement. Hector was fast, but Kel was faster. The challenge was mainly in trying not to slip. He grabbed at the leash and reeled Hector back in, scooping the dog up in his arms. The maneuver ended up covering his orange t-shirt in mud, but Kel already looked like a wreck from all the rain water, so he would have had to change clothes anyways. A certain someone would undoubtedly get worried and ask what happened when he got home, but that was a problem for later!
“You smell like a wet mop. A dirty wet mop,” he muttered to the dog. “Come on dude, running off like that is cat behavior! I thought you were better than that.”
Kel didn’t exactly dislike cats. He watched cat videos as much as the next person, but he found dogs far more reliable. Cats could vanish on you with no rhyme or reason, and sometimes bite your hand if you try to show them any semblance of affection! He wanted to like cats, he really really did, but it can get exhausting trying to keep up with them. One minute they’re all cuddly, the next minute you can’t even find them.
Well, if even dogs can run off like that, maybe he shouldn’t give up on cats either.
Kel put Hector back down on the ground, making sure to have a firm grasp on the leash this time. He ruffled his dog's messy, messy fur.
“Just don’t do it again, okay?”
