Work Text:
Spike woke up without a single memory from the night before, but he knew one thing, he was not in his bed. The mattress felt different and... there was someone next to him.
Oh. Oh, wait—
Now suddenly aware of his surroundings, Spike opened his eyes and stared at the individual next to him. Jet. Oh, god Jet. Spike tried over and over again to remember what happened last night and if he did anything that he shouldn't have, but it was no use.
There was nothing.
Soon after Spike's realization, Jet had began stirring, getting woken up from his sleep on his own accord. Spike inhaled sharply and tried to quietly remove himself from the bed—
but Jet's hand had latched onto Spike's wrist, leaving him unable to move anymore. Much to his dismay.
"Jet—" Spike began to say, more scared out of his mind than he'd be willing to admit. Yet as Jet opened his eyes, it was as though he already knew, giving Spike no use in trying to hide it.
Jet grumbled, barely able to make a coherent sentence at first, but managed to finally say something that Spike could understand.
"We didn't do anything, idiot."
The few words caught him off guard, but it seemed to calm him down since apparently Spike's first thought was something horrible. But, Jet assured him it wasn't anything like that, much to his relief and making it feel less awkward. They were both fully clothed, anyway. That should've been a dead giveaway.
It didn't explain why Spike was in Jet's bed, but at least his worst fear had been put out within mere seconds.
Spike found himself laying back down, finding the bed to be more comfortable than a few moments ago. Jet let Spike's wrist go and laid his head back down, eyes closing, now having him be oblivious to Spike's staring at him as Jet spoke again.
"You had a nightmare. Came in here and didn't say a word. Figured the lack of communication meant it was just that bad."
If that was the case, why didn't Spike remember it? He must've been trying to save himself the trouble.
"You can stay in here as long as you'd like, I wanna get some more sleep." Jet said, causing Spike to shift and shake Jet a little in hopes of keeping the other male awake.
It was a little weird and odd to even be considering it, but here Spike was, doing exactly that. It was too late to just brush it off, and besides, even if he didn't remember much from last night, he did remember each feeling and even some emotions.
They were overwhelming.
"Wait, before you do that—" Jet groaned, but Spike ignored it and continued. "—could you.. could- we—"
"Yes, now come here, dammit."
Spike grunted as Jet pulled him down next to him and turned slightly, throwing his arm around the smaller male and pulling him as close as he could.
How Jet could read Spike like a book, he'd never understand, but he didn't complain and instead endured it, curling up and relaxing in Jet's secure hold. It was just as comforting as his body remembered it.
Jet remembered Spike opening his bedroom door last night so vividly as if it was happening over and over again on loop. It hadn't been the first time Spike had done something like that, but it was the first time Jet had been awake. Jet never really got to completely see how Spike looked on nights like these, but it never bothered him.
He looked to be skimming through his set of vinyls near his bed, possibly deciding which ones he'd play while piloting the Bebop or taking care of the bonsai trees. He paused though, as the door to his room creaked and some light from outside broke in.
Spike paused as the door shut and the small lamplight nearby illuminated the room afterwards, not leaving them in the dark, but definitely limiting their light source just by a small amount.
"Again, huh?"
All Spike could do was nod.
Jet nodded and shifted, gently kicking the crate to the side before he laid down and held open his arms for Spike.
The smaller male gave, only what Jet could describe as, a lopsided smile. But with the small light source, Jet could see just how upset that nightmare had made him. So, when Spike moved silently and crawled into bed beside the other, Jet decided against asking anything about it and instead opted to comfort him.
The first time this happened, he could admit he was a little annoyed, but after Spike explained that he had been having nightmares, Jet felt as though each night Spike would come into his room would be his silent way of saying 'I trust you'.
Or at least, that's what Jet wanted to believe.
Spike woke up again, but this time, he felt less worried and a lot more comforted. It felt nice, actually. Sleeping alone always seemed to trigger those nightmares and he couldn't understand why.
But, it didn't really matter. Jet had been willing to allow Spike to do this, so maybe it'd help in the long run.
Jet had already been awake prior, it seemed. There were a few records resting in his lap as he examined each one and decided which one he was in the mood for today. Spike smiled before he could stop himself and that's when Jet finally seemed to notice Spike was awake.
"Good morning, partner. Did you want breakfast?"
Spike closed his eyes again, finding himself unable to remain calm under Jet's gaze. He shrugged at first, but eventually shuffled closer to Jet's side and yawned.
"In a bit. Still tired."
"I'm in no rush. Sleep all you want." Jet hummed, gently patting the top of Spike's head as he watched the other male drift off again.
Usually, Spike would leave before Jet got a chance to wake up, possibly to avoid talking about the nightmare he had, but this morning seemed a little different.
With this unusual turn of events, Jet, yet again, took this all as a silent 'I trust you' and maybe one day, Spike would trust Jet enough to tell him what makes his nightmares so horrible that he can't be alone.
For now, with Spike curled up beside him and sleeping peacefully, Jet could settle with this.
