Work Text:

The stark light from the kitchen washes over Yoongi as he runs his hands under the faucet. The warm water streams through his fingers and he rinses the last of his soapy dishes, reaching in to drain the water from the sudsy, water filled sink.

Yoongi can see Namjoon outside in the dark through the window. He raises a hand and waves, illuminated in the dark, a bright smile painting his face.

He beckons at Yoongi and Yoongi raises his hand to tell his husband, just one minute. Namjoon nods and drops down into the grass, where Yoongi watches him lay flat on his back. He does this sometimes.

Yoongi dries his hands on a dishtowel and puts away the last of the cooking utensils. He wipes down their colourful plates and tucks away their turtle-shaped cooking timer in a drawer, saving it for another day.

When he’s closed up tupperware containers full of leftovers and made them a home in the fridge, he makes his way out of the kitchen and flicks off the light. He wanders down the hallway, passing all their little photos on the walls—the ones of him and Jungkook on the beach, and the one of him and Namjoon on their honeymoon in Italy—and turns the corner to the back door.

Yoongi leaves the house and its air conditioning for the warm air and the sound of crickets outside. He shuts the door so as to not let any bugs enter their home, and strides across the little deck to where Namjoon is in the dark.

He sits himself down to Namjoon’s left.

Namjoon says, “Hello,” Yoongi says it back.

Yoongi asks, “What are you doing?” And Namjoon pulls on Yoongi’s sleeve. He says he’s watching the stars.

Yoongi’s no stranger to this behaviour, Namjoon has always had a thing for the stars, and the plants, and the little fish in their aquarium inside the house. It’s been like that ever since they first met.

Yoongi lays down next to Namjoon, their heads aligned, and he looks up to see what Namjoon can see.

Namjoon says, “You can see the Big Dipper from here.” Yoongi looks.

Namjoon lifts a hand to trace the constellation for Yoongi and Yoongi grins. He can see it too!

Namjoon tells Yoongi about the other constellations, and Yoongi’s quite familiar. After so many years together he’s heard about them a million times, but he doesn’t mind. He’d listen over and over for Namjoon. There’s nothing better to Yoongi than listening to Namjoon.

Namjoon’s hand finds Yoongi’s in the dark, and he laces their fingers together. Yoongi smiles.

Namjoon says, “Do you think, somewhere out there, there’s another us? You know, in a parallel universe or something?”

Yoongi says he’s not quite sure. Namjoon tells him he hopes so, because he’s certain in any universe they’d have found each other.

“We might be different, though.” He says. “We might have long hair and mustaches. You might work as a brain surgeon and I might be an olympic figure skater.”

Yoongi considers this. He doesn’t think his hands are steady enough to be a brain surgeon. He says as much.

Namjoon just laughs and says, “We could be anything!” And Yoongi thinks so too. He could be anything as long as Namjoon is with him.

They lay like that for a while. The crickets chirp and a breeze ruffles the trees around them. Yoongi feels his eyelids grow heavy under the glow of the moon, and Namjoon turns to face him.

“Baby,” He whispers. Yoongi looks at him through droopy eyelids. “You’re falling asleep.”

Yoongi says, “I know.” And Namjoon presses a hand against Yoongi’s cheek. His fingers are warm against his skin.

Namjoon tells him to give in, and Yoongi does. He closes his eyes and slips away for a little while, the nighttime sounds of the suburbs lost as he drifts out of consciousness for a short period of time. He’s not worried about being outside, he trusts that Namjoon is there with him.

Yoongi blinks open his eyes after about an hour, Namjoon is still next to him, sitting up on his knees.

Yoongi says, “Hi.” And Namjoon bids him hello.

Namjoon tells Yoongi about the things he’d seen while Yoongi was asleep. A family of raccoons on the fence, a blur of a bat in the sky. He says it was peaceful just to watch them, Yoongi knows what that’s like.

Yoongi sits up, his legs tucked in the grass, his eyelids still a bit heavy from sleep. He steadies himself and stretches out his arms.

Namjoon watches the trees.

Yoongi goes to stand up, to brush himself off and to marvel at the grass stains that are likely in his clothes, but Namjoon stops him with a hand on his arm. He has this look in his eye, one that Yoongi’s grown familiar with, when Namjoon has something to say. He remembers it from the day Namjoon proposed.

He says, “I think when I die I’d like to be buried with a tree.”

Yoongi watches his face curiously, and asks why.

Namjoon shrugs and says, “You know, it’s like giving back. Giving life after my death. A tree would grow in my place and I’d leave something to remember. Something important.”

To this Yoongi hums. He understands, kind of. Though he isn’t quite sure why Namjoon’s actively thinking about death on a Thursday night.

Namjoon looks at Yoongi with wide eyes in the darkness and asks, “Would you do that for me? Give me to the trees when I die?”

Yoongi scoffs and says, “Joonah, shut up. You’re not going to die anytime soon.”

Namjoon produces a small smile on his lips, and his voice comes out soft. “I know,” He says. “I just can’t bear the thought of my life without you, so I hope I’m the first to go.”

Yoongi stops for a second, his mouth going dry. His chest tightens. His eyes prickle just a smidge and he asks Namjoon, his voice barely a whisper, “And what about me?”

Namjoon reaches out and cups Yoongi’s face in his hands. Yoongi knows he’s starting to cry, he can’t help it.

Namjoon shushes him gently and asks what all the fuss is about.

Yoongi says again, “What about me?” He asks, “What am I supposed to do when you’re gone?”

He feels a tear track down his cheek, hitting Namjoon’s fingers in the dark. Namjoon tells him not to worry.

He says when their time comes they’ll both be old and frail, they’ll have lived a busy life. They’ll have seen all the things they had ever wanted to see and done all the things they had ever wanted to do. Namjoon says they’ll have loved each other a thousand times over, so there’s no reason to worry.

Namjoon says, “I’ll keep you safe until then. I’ll always keep you safe, my love.”

Yoongi leans over and connects his lips to Namjoon’s. He crawls forward until they’re chest to chest and he shares a breath with his lover.

Namjoon smiles and Yoongi hums.

Yoongi believes him. He’ll always believe his boy. Until the day he dies, he will never mistrust Namjoon. He never could.

Namjoon pulls back and leans his forehead against Yoongis. He says, “I love you.” And repeats it twice more.

Yoongi bites his lip. He tells him he loves him too, he always has and always will.

Namjoon says, “That’s a long time.”

Yoongi chuckles. He says, “I could love you for an eternity and I would never get tired of it.”

Namjoon asks him if he really means it, and Yoongi assures him, yes he really does. He would wait a century for Namjoon if it meant loving him the way he does right now.

When Namjoon and Yoongi decide to turn in for the night Namjoon stops him at the door with his arms around Yoongi’s waist.

Yoongi grins and asks what he’s doing, Namjoon says he’s making a memory.

Yoongi chuckles and turns in his arms, pressing their lips together in another kiss.

Yoongi says, “You’re cheesy.”

Namjoon says, “Anything for you.”

And Yoongi’s heart flutters, like it always does with Namjoon.

“I’d miss you.” Yoongi hums. “I’d miss you if you were a tree.”

Namjoon leans his cheek against Yoongi’s head. “I’m not going to be a tree anytime soon.”

Yoongi says he knows, but it’s true. He would.

Namjoon tells him if he were a tree Yoongi would be the soil helping him grow, the sunshine feeding him, and the rain quenching his thirst.

Namjoon whispers, “You’d be everything. You are everything.”

Yoongi tells him he’s nothing without Namjoon.

Namjoon pulls away and looks at Yoongi with a serious expression. “You’re my everything. My sun and my stars, my water and air. You’re it Yoongi, you always have been. My life doesn’t exist without you.”

Yoongi feels himself blush and he buries his face in Namjoon’s chest.

He says, “What’s gotten into you?” And Namjoon shrugs.

“My baby,” He whispers. He lifts Yoongi’s chin with his hand. “My everything.”

Yoongi smiles. Namjoon smiles back.

Namjoon says, “I’ll love you as long as I live.” And Yoongi knows he means it.
