Work Text:

"Oh, I'm in love!" Boq flopped down onto the bed, spreading his arms out. Elphaba didn't look up from her book.

"I send my condolences," she mumbled. "Get well soon, Boq."

"Come now, Elphie, don't be cold," he scolded, but she didn't say anything more, incidentally propelling him into one of his rambles. "Though, I don't think you'd be too fond of her. She's your polar opposite. She's bubbly, popular, beautiful - oh, Oz, is she beautiful! She's so-"

"Spare me," Elphaba groaned, looking up from her book to glare at him. "Why don't you talk about this with Crope and Tibbet? Or even Fiyero? I'm the last person who wants to know."

"Fine, then." Boq glared right back. "I'll call them over."

"Oz. Do I get a minute of peace?"

"Yes. Quite a few." Boq rolled his eyes and pulled his phone up, typing quickly. "How about we all go out later? Then you'll get even more minutes of peace."

"Alright, sure." Elphaba waved her hand dismissively, going back to her book. Her phone dinged from Boq'a message and she got a look at the time from the corner of her eye. "Nevermind. No minutes."

"What?" Boq asked as Elphaba pushed her book away and grabbed her phone.

"I've got somewhere to be," she barely explained, running over to the door.

"Where could you possibl-"

"Bye!"

After the third ring, Glinda peeled herself off of Elphaba's lap to send her a look, one that Elphaba groaned at.

“Elphie.”

"What?"

Glinda shoved Elphaba's ringing phone in her hand. "Somebody really wants you. It's rung three times now!"

"Hello?" Elphaba started.

"Elphaba! I cannot sit through this without you!" Fiyero shouted through the phone, making Elphaba wince.

"Shit,” she whispered, the realisation hitting her. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

“You think Boq’s gonna wa-“

Elphaba put the phone down on him to meet Glinda’s confused look.

“I’m late for Boq’s new love rant,” Elphaba explained, and Glinda nodded, not at all understanding. She glanced outside of the window, biting her lip.

“So, should I walk home? You don’t sound like you have much time to drop me off.”

Elphaba looked away from Glinda and fiddled with her fingers on the wheel, contemplating the offer. “Would you.. wanna come?”

“Really?” Glinda squealed, grabbing Elphaba’s hand. Elphaba nodded, smiling. “Yes! I’ve wanted to meet your friends for ages! Let’s go!”

She jumped off of Elphaba’s lap after leaving her with one kiss to the cheek, and Elphaba quickly set off.

“No making out there though, Glinda. Your lipstick always gets all over me.”

“Yes, and doesn’t it look wonderful? I’m sure-“

“No making out.”

“Ughh,” Glinda pouted. “Fine.”

Glinda did not stick to that promise at all.

She kissed differing features along Elphaba's face, melting her. She finally got to her mouth and kissed her quickly, cupping her cheeks to keep her close.

"Glinda.." Elphaba breathed when Glinda moved onto her neck, sucking and kissing at several spots. "We shouldn't."

"Come on, Elphie, nobody will find us here, the windows are blacked out. Live a lit-"

"Elphaba Thropp!" Fiyero slammed the door open.

"Ah!" Glinda screeched, jumping away from Elphaba and holding her hands up in a surrender pose. Fiyero's jaw dropped and he glanced between both of them quickly. "We weren't kissing!"

"You think I'd believe Elphaba’s just wearing makeup?!" Fiyero threw his arms out and brought attention to the fact that Elphaba had lipstick all over her face, mostly smudged on her mouth - though there was quite a bit covering her neck. "Especially red lipstick, she looks like a lurlinmas ornament!"

"How dare you!" Glinda gasped, jumping out of the car and advancing on Fiyero. Elphaba pushed herself out of the car and Glinda grabbed her face, showing it to Fiyero. "Elphie would look amazing with red lipstick! In fact, I'll prove it - Elphie, pucker up!"

"Why are you all being dramatic without us? Wha- oh my Oz!" Crope squealed, shoving his hand over his mouth and grabbing Tibbet. "Tib! Tib!"

"Elphie! You-"

"What is everyone shouting about?" Boq finally made his way round, and immediately lit up at what he saw. "Oh, Glinda! Hi! Elphie, I didn't know you kne-" Boq's jaw dropped when he saw Elphaba’s state and he blinked rapidly, putting two and two together.

"Biq? What are you doing here?" Glinda asked, turning towards Elphaba. "You're gonna have to introduce me to everyone," she whispered, gesturing to said everyone. She took a double-glance at Elphaba. "Oh Oz. You do have a lot of lipstick on you, oh dear.."

Glinda began to wipe Elphaba's face, but she only smudged and spread it more and Elphaba shook her head, stopping her. “You and Boq know each other?" she whispered back.

"Yeah. He keeps asking me out."

"Someone's gonna have to catch me up. I think I missed something," Tibbet said, and Crope nodded.

"That's the girl," Boq said, making weird hand movements towards her.

"Yes! I am the girl!" Glinda declared proudly, curtseying. She whispered back to Elphaba: “Elphie. What and or who is the girl? Why are they- oh dear, you're shocked too."

"Glinda is my girlfriend," Elphaba breathed, and Glinda nodded, still confused.

Boq's jaw dropped further and he threw his hand over it, moving his eyes rapidly between Glinda and Elphaba.

"Well now," Fiyero gulped, after enough silence, "this is just awkward."

"Entertaining," Crope corrected, earning a look from Elphaba.

"Boq, I didn't know- uh, Glinda's- she-"

"Wow. You've left Elphie speechless," Tibbet gasped. "This is good."

“You have a girlfriend?” Boq asked, sounding more offended than hurt. “For how long?”

“Two months,” Glinda answered for Elphaba, who was stood frozen in place rather uselessly.

“Elphie!” Fiyero scolded. “And here I thought you loved us!”

“She does.” Glinda threw her head back and forth. “She just shows it in her own unique way.”

“That’s one unique way of putting it,” Fiyero huffed. Elphaba had hoped she would have a speech prepared for this moment, so she found herself hurriedly fumbling through her jumbled thoughts for anything to say.

“I wasn’t ready,” she finally said, interrupting Glinda and Fiyero and earning everyone’s attention again. “I’m sorry. I do love you. I didn’t want anything to go wrong.”

“Oh, Elphie,” Boq smiled, walking over and hugging her tightly. The rest of the group quickly followed, and they formed into a group hug around Elphaba, which she definitely wouldn’t have allowed in any other situation.

“Boq? You’re not mad?” Elphaba asked incredulously, and Boq shook his head quickly against her shoulder.

“Of course not. I just… wish you’d told us earlier.” Boq smiled forcefully against her. Elphaba realised through his wavering voice that he was crying. “But you’re a private person, I understand that. It’s fine.”

Elphaba wouldn’t admit this to anyone (other than maybe Glinda), but she enjoyed that hug just as much as Boq and cried just as much as him - which she knew was definitely noticeable on her skin when everyone took double-takes at her but none said anything.
