Summary:

You'd heard the gossip about the new guy in town–a widow named Hero, taking care of his late wife's little brother. Nothing interesting ever happens where you live, so when you have a chance encounter with the new guy, you decide your life goal would be to befriend him.

You're totally not in over your head.

Notes:

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY! THE X READER ISNT REALLY ROMANTIC :D

this fic is set after pursuit's bad end–its not like depressing tho, this fic doesn't go into pursuit really at all. i literally have no explanation for this. it started as a joke but then i got carried away like ALWAYS. you don't really need to read pursuit or ybm to understand this, you'll just be as clueless as the reader. which might be fun! it airs on the side of wholesome, with a nice ending. it stays in reader pov the whole time! honestly its more wholesome if you don't have context anyways...

i rlly told people i was gonna write a romantic pursuit hero x reader then it turned out to just be found family...you can see at the beginning i ATTEMPT like ONE little romantic thing but i fail so its just. queerplatonic, i guess. listen I'm aroace i have no interest in writing straight out romance–not saying that's how everyone who's aroace is, its just how i am. oh, and if you have questions or..want chaos i guess, here's my tumblr

Cover art! Or something...

anwyays enjoy maybe possibly. have fun :D

Work Text:

“Did you meet the new guy yet?” Your grandma, Joyce, whispered loudly, looking off somewhere in the distance.

You glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. “No? There’s a new guy?” That’s surprising.

“Oh yes,” The older woman waved her hand, putting the other to her cheek. “He’s the most charming thing. A refreshing change, considering all the old geezer’s I have to look at all day. He’s a real gentleman, despite looking so young.”

“Wow.” You blinked. “What’s his deal then? Why would he move here if he’s young?” The only reason you were here was that you had nowhere else to go. A small town like this was peaceful too, and city life never appealed to you.

“That’s the tragic part.” Joyce shook her head, staring off wistfully once again. Where was she even looking? “He and his late wife’s family disapproved of the relationship and tried to stop them. So, they ran off, bringing her little brother too because of the bad home life.” You were starting to feel weird. Wasn’t that a bit too personal to gossip about? Especially about the little brother…

“It’s a wonderful love story, but…he’s widowed. She died from an illness. So, he moved here with his late wife’s little brother, fulfilling her wish to move to a small town after they got married. And, it works with hiding away from their terrible family too. ”

“…Wow. It’s like a movie.” You leaned back into the bench, watching the few people walking about. You waved back to the few who noticed, smiling softly.

“I know, right?” Joyce, despite the tragedy she was talking about, was smiling brightly. Seems she was really bored. “A Romeo and Juliet situation, a sickly wife who dies, and a promise to take care of her little brother…it’s honorable. We’re all going to keep watch for him, make sure the nasty people can’t find them. He’s a good man.”

“Mm. Sounds like it.” You weren’t all that interested. You almost felt bad, knowing the poor guy was bombarded with questions every time he left his house. “What’s his name?”

“Hero.” Your grandma almost said it dreamily, clasping her hands together.

“What, is he really that handsome? Caught your eye?” You teased, earning a scoff and a smack.

“That’s enough out of you!” She huffed, and you just laughed.

“I’m excited to meet him, since he’s so great. How long has he been here?”

“A good while now.”

“…How have I missed him?”

“You’re a hermit.” Joyce pinched your cheek, and you whined, batting at the hand.

“Am not!”

“Are too.”

Some people walking by noticed the older woman and her grandchild fighting and shook their heads. Typical behavior from the two. It was endearing at least, and made the town a little less boring.

You kicked your feet as you walked, watching the sun fall beneath the horizon. You were wandering around the forest like you sometimes did, holding a bag of treats for some of the wildlife. They were pretty friendly, and you absolutely took advantage.

Time for your daily dose of dopamine.

You pursed your lips and whistled as you always have growing up, waiting for your usual visitors to arrive. You sat down on your favorite log to wait. It wasn’t long before a squirrel scrambled to sit by your feet, looking at you expectantly. With a chuckle, you handed over some nuts.

“You’re fat.” You watched it eat, seeing it’s definitely gotten plumper. “Maybe I shouldn’t give you any more food.”

It didn’t respond, shoving some in its mouth for later. It then bolted, and you watched the squirrel go.

“Not even a thank you…” You sighed, shaking your head. Then, as you were greeted by more critters, you heard a louder step. You immediately straightened up as the bunny at your feet jumped into your arms, startled. As you soothed the baby, you wondered if you attracted something out of your league. A bear…christ, you hoped it wasn’t a bear.

“It’s me and you, Bun.” You pet the poor thing even as it scratched you in its panic, listening closely for the steps once more. There was nothing for a bit, but you felt eyes. There was something there.

There were steps again, and you blinked. Hm…that wasn’t an animal. You rolled your head back, looking behind yourself.

Oh my god.

“A man.” You deadpanned, staring at the tall stranger. The guy met your gaze, looking…confused, to say the least.

“Who are you?” He stayed where he was, not approaching. You continued to study him, wondering why he seemed familiar. You definitely haven’t seen this person, but…

Ah! Got it!

“Are you the new guy?” You shifted, turning so you were sitting on the other side of the log and could face him. The bunny in your arms freaked out again, but calmed down after being soothed. “Jeez, what’s gotten into you?” Bun was always skittish, as bunnies are, but it shouldn’t be this afraid. It’s not like this guy was dangerous.

“New guy?” He blinked, then seemed to gain understanding. “Ah, are you from town? I don’t think I’ve met you before. My name is Hero.” He then flashed a bright smile, the image of an upstanding citizen.

You squinted.

Hero continued to smile, even as the seconds went on without a response. It slowly grew more awkward as he waited for you to give your own name. You admired his dedication to his politeness.

“Cool. Nice to meet you.”

“…Can I have your name?” Hero kept smiling.

“I don’t know, can you?” You pet the bunny gently, cooing as it tried to burrow into your jacket. What in the world has got it so anxious? Seeing Hero’s almost constipated look, you laughed, shaking your head. You said your name and saw Hero’s shoulders relax.

“Nice name.”

“Thanks. I like yours too. It’s kind of on the nose, but, you know.” You shrugged. Then, seeing him remain standing like a beanpole, you decided to help the man relax. “Here, sit down. Let’s talk.” You pat the space on the log next to you.

Hero looked unsure, but then seemed to think of something and quickly sat down. The bunny freaked out, jumping directly out of your arms and scuttling off. Your hands remained out, speechless. “Bun…”

“Are you going to go after your rabbit?” Hero tilted his head.

“He’s not my rabbit. I don’t really have pets, I just come out here and hang out, and they come to me. We’re friends.” You then slumped, dejected. “Seems Bun was too jumpy today…it’s unlike him.”

“Oh, sorry.” Hero rubbed the back of his neck. “It might be me.”

“You? Do you have bunny repellant or something?” You looked at your arms, wincing at the red lines. Man, his claws were sharp. Probably not wise to try and comfort a panicking bunny.

“Animals just…don’t really like me,” Hero said, arms crossed.

“They don’t?” Interesting. For some reason, you kind of expected the opposite. Especially hearing how everyone in town gushed about him.

“Yeah. They used to when I was younger. I guess it’s because I’m taller now?” Hero messed with the sleeves of his sweater, pulling it farther down his hands. The action brought your attention to them.

“Uh, maybe? Usually, animals sense your character, but it might make more sense if it’s height.” Despite it being dark, you could see how he flinched at your words. You frowned. “Oops, sorry. Didn’t mean to imply anything. I’m sure you’re a great guy, considering what I’ve been told.”

“Right…” Hero chuckled, rubbing his arm. “So…you’ve heard about me?”

“My grandma told me your life story.” You admitted it without shame. “It’s Joyce. You know her?”

“I do. She’s very kind, if not a little nosy.”

“Old ladies are like that.” You grinned, then, without thinking, reached over and grabbed his wrist. “Hey, what happened to your–”

Hero ripped his arm away, the action so quick and violent that it made him lose his balance, falling flat on his back onto the ground. He breathed quickly, chest rising and falling as his wide eyes darted around your face.

It was silent as you stared at each other, both not moving.

“Uh…” You grimaced. “Sorry. I…wasn’t thinking. I shouldn’t have just grabbed your arm like that. I guess I got so used to being in this town where everyone’s so familiar that I…” God, you felt guilty.

“I–It’s fine. It’s…fine.” Hero tried to smile, but it looked awful. He was a nervous wreck, and you almost went to help him sit back up. Then you remembered that it would be stupid considering how he just reacted to touch.

It made you curious, though. That wasn’t a normal reaction at all. There was touch aversion, but…he was way too panicked for it to be so simple. Your gaze trailed over to his eye, the one covered by an eyepatch, and you thought about the scars you saw on his hand.

You wondered.

“Hey, I know this might be overstepping, and just interrupt me if I am!” You raised both hands in surrender as Hero finally sat up, wincing slightly. “I know you moved here suddenly and all and that you’re taking care of your late wife’s brother, but…”

Ah, what the hell. Might as well just ask. It was absolutely crossing boundaries, but you grew up in this place where no one had qualms about sharing personal details. You were just too curious, and a little concerned.

“You’re running from your family, right? Is…is there any chance…” You gestured to your own eye vaguely, then your arms. Hero blinked rapidly as if trying to decipher what you meant. Then, it dawned on him.

For a moment, he seemed deep in thought, as if debating whether to answer. Then, strangely enough, you saw a smile. It was fast, and you thought maybe you imagined it, mainly because he now looked…sad and hurt.

“If you’re implying they were abusive, then…” Hero lowered his head, shoulders hunching up. “Well, mine weren’t as bad as Mari’s, at least.”

“Mari?”

Hero tensed. “Oh…that was my wife’s name...”

“May she rest in peace.” You saw how upset he was and put a comforting hand on his back. You then pulled it back, profusely apologizing. “It’s a terrible habit. I’m really, really sorry.”

“It’s alright.” Hero smiled sheepishly, opening his mouth to say something else. But then, his eyes widened, seeing how dark out it was. “I need to get going.” Without another word, he stood up, giving one last awkward wave. “Bye!”

“Bye…?” He was already gone. Your hand remained raised, left bewildered in the face of such a weird interaction. Your grandma wasn’t wrong, at least. He was charming. But…a lot more awkward than you expected.

Plus…it felt like he was putting on a front of sorts. You don’t know what it was, but…something felt ingenuine. You wanted to get to know him, considering how tragic his past was. Maybe you inherited your grandma’s nosiness, or you really did have nothing better to do. It was probably a combination of both.

“Bun?” You watched the rabbit hop over to you, resting on your foot. It was no longer freaking out. “Huh, I guess you really were scared of that guy. He was huge, so I can’t blame you.” If he hadn’t been so nice and self-conscious, you probably would’ve been more intimidated.

After patting the bunny, you decided to make your way home. Maybe you'll tell Joyce about your exciting encounter. You knew she’d eat it up.

As the weeks passed, you and Hero ran into each other more and more. It helped that you were out and about more, trying to help around and not be so holed up inside. Often you’d be looking at produce and find him not far away with a gentle smile on his face, picking out snacks.

You got to hear more and more about Hero through casual conversation, as he also heard about you. You definitely didn’t have as interesting of a life–at least, with what you were willing to share. Merely raised by your grandmother in this small town. Hero still listened. You were more interested in his life, but he tended to be tight-lipped beyond a certain point, especially about the kid he calls his little brother.

Besides their conversations, Hero also got to see firsthand how unafraid you were of danger. Often you would approach very wild animals and uncaringly scoop them up, bearing the scratches with a smile and showing off your new friend.

You knew you had gotten closer after Hero went from watching on with exasperation and confusion to trying to patch you up while scolding your recklessness. Despite being around the same age, it seemed Hero had a nurturing habit.

It was cute. It was also fun to tease Hero about it, and once, you even called him a single mom. You worried after saying it, hoping it wasn’t too insensitive, but he had laughed. It was an interesting laugh, because it seems like he fixed it halfway through to make it sound better. He was dedicated to his charming vibe–if his hair wasn’t enough indication of that.

Soon it was months, Hero growing more and more used to the town and becoming a part of it like everyone else. In time, something else you noticed was him not jerking away when you touched him anymore. It took a long time–and he still avoided everyone else–but Hero eventually didn't mind it after you consistently made more minor gestures. Like he built up a tolerance.

In fact, Hero even began to initiate. It was small things, like removing a piece of fuzz from your clothes or taking a stray leaf out of your hair, but it was something. You were happy, finally having someone your age to be friends with.

You wouldn’t say it out loud, though. Somehow, you felt like calling Hero your friend to his face would not go over well. You don’t know why, but you’ve learned to trust your gut.

If you were just an endearing person with a knack for bugging people in his eyes, you were happy. You just felt victorious seeing him start smiling more genuinely, instead of that fake one he always tried to cover up with. Seems like a habit from his past.

You were determined to make him as comfortable as possible. He was really a part of the town now, and everyone was like one big family.

However, one strange thing was how you still hadn’t met Sunny yet. The only reason you even know his name was because Hero let it slip after gushing one day–bragging about how talented Sunny was. Honestly, he really sold the proud older sibling role well. It…was nostalgic to you. But you didn’t linger on that thought long.

Hero hadn’t said Sunny’s name since, and you wondered if it was a sore topic. He was clearly very protective of his brother, which…was understandable, considering all that you heard. It aligned with all his other behavior, so you never pushed it. You could understand. To lose someone, it…

That’s why, right now, having Hero make an offer for you to come over for dinner…made you really excited. Hero seemed nervous as he said it, rambling about how Sunny wanted to meet the person he always talked about, so you coming over was natural. You quickly accepted and ran off before Hero could change his mind. You knew he lived at the end of the long path to the woods.

The sun fell further as you walked up to his door, taking a deep breath before knocking. Hopefully, you don't mess this up. Your heartbeat was heavy in your ears, excited to finally meet the boy Hero had bragged so much about.

“You’re here.” Hero opened the door, a nervous smile on his face. There was apparent tension lining his shoulders, and you felt bad. This must be a big step for him. You couldn’t waste his good faith. Especially seeing that he wasn’t wearing his eyepatch, fully showing his bad eye. That rarely ever happened, so you knew he was taking a risk here and being vulnerable.

“Yup! I brought cookies.”

“Cookies…?” Hero’s eyes flashed, voice wavering. You tilted your head, confused by the reaction.

“Um, yeah. I bake sometimes…I promise it’s edible! Everyone in town loves them.” You coughed. “I mean, uh…I’m not bragging. It’s to reassure that it tastes good, and I’m not offering poison or something…” You trailed off. “I’m rambling.”

“You are.” Hero failed to hide a smile, opening the door wider. Seems you acting like a bumbling fool relaxed his nerves. Great. Unintentional win, you suppose. “Come in. You can set the cookies on the–”

The moment you stepped into the house, a boy ran up to you at full speed. You would’ve jumped back had you not been used to such behavior. You accepted that you were about to be tackled.

“Sunshine, calm down!” Hero closed the door, running over to the boy and quickly grabbing him by the armpits before he could reach you. The kid kicked his feet. “What happened to being shy?”

Sunny hung limply, waving his arms. He then quickly wrote something down on his little whiteboard.

‘More hungry than shy.’

Hero sighed heavily but fondly, putting the kid down. “Alright. Don’t overwhelm our guest, okay? First, let them put down their gift.”

Sunny bobbed his head up and down, and you walked over to put your plate down on the counter. You unabashedly looked around, admiring the décor. “Nice place.” You looked over at Hero, then down to his side. Sunny stared back at you, blinking owlishly with his visible eye.

You noticed that his eyepatch had a small cactus colored on it. “Nice to meet you.” You grinned,  putting out a hand before bringing it back to yourself. Hero had made it pretty clear Sunny had the same touch aversion he did and would take a little time before–

Sunny somehow teleported directly before you, nearly giving you a heart attack. Sunny stared at you, squinting and studying your features. So, naturally, you did the same, staring back just as rudely.

And…well…

Hm.

He looks…older than you thought. Not that Hero ever said Sunny’s age, but the way Hero always talked about him, and now looking at how he’s dressed and the childish behavior…

It was a little off-putting, you can’t lie. Sunny was clearly young, but...his face was too skinny. His proportions too–he was very short, but it’s not in the same way kids are. So now you’re confused, and have a weird sense of something being wrong. But not in an unsettling way. You felt like you were starting to understand.

You could also feel Hero’s piercing gaze, probably making sure you don’t upset his kid. Understandable. You knew how it felt to feel responsible for someone.

“Hi…” You told Sunny your name, cocking your head to the side. “What’s your name?”

Sunny blinked, turning to look back at Hero. Receiving a short nod, Sunny looked to you after writing something on the board.

‘Sunny.’

“Wow, your name is very nice.” You smiled softly. You definitely were catching on to what was going on, especially seeing his wobbly handwriting. “I wish my name was that cool.”

Sunny mimicked how you tilted your head, so you moved it to the other side. Sunny mirrored your movement, and you stifled a laugh. Cute. You then looked over to the couch, seeing a sprawl of markers and paper on the table. “You like to draw?”

Sunny’s eye practically sparkled, scribbling something down.

Yes! Lots! Come look!’

Sunny then ran over, popping his head up when he saw you didn’t come. You dutifully walked over, still feeling Hero’s eyes on you. Man, he can be intense…

You sat down on the cushion, getting comfortable as Sunny began to show you his masterpieces, describing what was happening in them with fervor despite using the whiteboard. You responded with just as much interest and excitement, smiling warmly the whole time. It really was nostalgic. Hero eventually took a seat beside you, lifting an arm to rest across the couch cushion behind your back.

…Hey, was he allowed to be so casual like that? Despite knowing Hero’s arm was behind you, you did your best not to look. Ah, but you were so excited. That meant he was more comfortable around you if he made that kind of unconscious gesture!

Success! Friendship is blooming.

You assumed it was because of how you were treating Sunny. But, you couldn’t think about that now. At this moment, you needed to focus on Sunny, who seemed very happy to have someone new to show things to. It made you warm, seeing someone else you once knew in Sunny.

After some time passed, Hero eventually got up to finish dinner, calling you and Sunny over when it was ready and plated. Classical music echoed from a radio, and you felt like it somehow made the food taste better. It was the best meal you’d had in years, and it took every bit of willpower not to scarf it down like a rabid animal.

“Hero, oh my god. That was the best meal I’ve ever eaten.” You outright said it, leaning back in your chair. You looked at Sunny, pointing a thumb at Hero. “You’re lucky you’ve got such a good cook as your brother. Me? I either have to do it myself, or Joyce–my grandma–will do something wild with her experimental ingredients.”

Sunny giggled, and you had a moment. It once again supported all your assumptions, gathering all the knowledge you knew up until now.

Sunny wasn’t fully mute, was he? Just like his childish behavior and height, his and Hero’s eyes, the way Hero dodged certain aspects of his past, the reaction to touching, the fake persona he desperately kept up…

No wonder they ran away from their family. It was clear they had suffered tremendously, and thinking about Mari’s death, you wondered if her sickliness really was something she was born with.

Ah, you were getting upset. You had thought so quickly in the span of a second, but you needed to promptly continue talking. “Once, I think she put in something completely inedible. I was out for the count for a good week. It was rough, but I know my stomach is stronger for it!” You pat your stomach proudly. Sunny laughed softly again, entertained by your exaggerated gestures.

“A week?” Hero’s brows furrowed. “It was that bad?”

“Oh yeah.” You waved your hand, not picking up on his tone. “I rarely let her cook now, but man, growing up, you would not believe how many times we–I got sick. My grandma meant well. She just has no ability in the kitchen. Her husband was the one who cooked before he died, so I guess it makes sense she’s inept. Getting sick was better than burning my hands, at least. I still have a bad habit of burning or cutting myself, like a dummy.” You lifted a hand, staring at the marks on your fingers.

“She fed poison to a child? And made you cook?” Hero looked…unhappy, to say the least. You finally noticed the weird atmosphere and tried to lighten the mood. You might’ve said something strange without realizing it.

“It’s no big deal! I wasn’t some wimpy kid. I’m really thankful because now I’m not a picky eater! And, I can appreciate a good meal when I eat one, considering I have to cook every day. But, I’m kind of jealous. I’ve been making food for so long, but only my baking has reached a point I’m satisfied with. I wish I could make food as tasty as you do.” You sighed dreamily, just imagining the power you’d have if you could wield such kitchen powers.

“Um, thank you. But…”  Hero’s fingers tapped against the table, almost rhythmically. Sunny glanced over, as if waiting for something. “Hm.” Hero’s lip twitched, hand moving over and grabbing the clean napkin nearby, fiddling with it. “If you…like my cooking so much, you…”

Sometimes this happens. Hero would take a while to figure out what he wanted to say or was almost hesitant to say it. You were used to it at this point and made sure to remain patiently smiling, as you always do.

“You should just…come over for dinner more. That way, you don’t have to hurt…” Hero’s eyes trailed away from your hand. “That way you can eat the food you like. Right? Right…”

“Are you inviting me over for dinner again?” You tried to hide how excited you were. Oh my god, you were actually going to be good friends. And you were being offered more delicious food! This is amazing–you’re barely able to contain your joy.

“Yes. I…am.” Hero covered his mouth with one hand, looking away from you. Was he being shy?

“Well, I will happily take you up on that offer.” You grinned before seeing a whiteboard placed in front of you.

Stay?’

“Stay?” You hummed. “You want me to stay longer?”

Sunny nodded.

“That’s good. After all, I still haven’t shared my cookies.” You beamed, moving to get up and grab them. With a bounce in your step, you took off the foil, balling it up and placing it on the counter.

Then, with a flourish, you presented them to Hero and Sunny. “Ta-da! Homemade and delectable, if I do say so myself.” You wore a crooked grin, setting the plate on the table. “I made extra since Hero’s a big guy.”

Sunny clapped, reaching out to grab one. He then stopped, glancing at Hero. Hero gently pats the other boy’s head with a helpless expression. “Okay, I’ll try first.”

You weren’t offended at all about Sunny’s hesitation. You long already decided what was going on and would be as understanding and empathetic as possible. Mindlessly, you picked up one of the cookies, nibbling on it.

Hero watched you, and with a random burst of confidence, you grabbed a cookie and brought it to his face. You waited for him to take it, waving it slowly back and forth. Finally, Hero’s lips wobbled, and he grabbed it.

You eventually let go and sat down, watching as Hero slowly brought it to his mouth, taking a bite. He first just looked at Sunny with an encouraging smile when he did, gesturing for him to take one. But then, his face changed.

He looked at you, then at the cookie, back and forth. Like he’s deciphering a code. You were almost offended. “Are you really that surprised it tastes good?”

“No! No, not that!” Hero frantically waved his hands, quickly taking another bite. His eyes lit up, a warm expression softening his features. You stopped eating just to stare.

He really was charming, huh? Of course, you were immune to it at this point, knowing most of it was a front. But when he’s being genuine like this, letting his guard down…

You flushed, focusing back on your cookie. Stupid brain with stupid observations and stupid thoughts.

It was nice as the three of you ate in mostly silence, only the classical music from the radio audible. It was so peaceful. You honestly didn’t think you could be this relaxed in the presence of others, not after…

As you watched Sunny grab the last cookie, you glanced at your watch. Your eyes widened. “Oh wow, it’s late. I should get going before I’m tempted to crash on your couch.” You joke, grabbing your dinner plate to wash. Hero stood up simultaneously, reaching over and grabbing it instead.

“You’re the guest. You shouldn’t do the dishes.”

“…You fed me free food. Let me at least do this to repay you.”

“No, no, I invited you over. I’ll wash. It’s my pleasure.”

“But–”

“Sit down for me. I’ll be right back.”

You did what he said, plopping down in defeat. So much for being polite and dignified. Hero was just too good at negotiating. It couldn’t be helped. After sulking for a little, you noticed Sunny staring at you with an unwavering gaze.

“…You need something?”

Sunny blinked rapidly, coming back into focus. He then picked up his whiteboard, wrote something, and turned it around.

Do you have to go? Can you stay?’

You smiled, feeling warm at the message. Knowing that Sunny still came to enjoy your presence despite everything made you really happy. You really wanted to get to know the two, and the fact they were willing to open up to someone new despite what happened to them made you emotional.

“I promise I’ll come back tomorrow, okay?”

Sunny remained sad, shoulders slumped and bottom lip jutting out. You felt a punch to your gut.

“Pinky promise, okay? I pinky promise I will come back tomorrow.” You reached out your hand, keeping it up. You then realized how dumb it was because Sunny absolutely wouldn’t reciprocate, but it was honestly just a habit from the past that you unintentionally–

Sunny linked pinkies. Stunned, you kept still, afraid of using force. You left every bit of interaction up to him. You didn’t think he would trust you so quickly, and you wondered if maybe that trusting nature was why Hero was so protective.

If he was like this…how many times was he hurt because of that nature of his? Mari and Hero both making a point to take care of him…more and more, you understand why. Giving him a safe space, one Hero probably never had…

Great. Now you’re emotional.

“What are you two doing?”

You could feel his presence behind you before he even spoke, Hero resting his hands on the back of your chair and leaning over you.

“A pinky promise.” You smiled, and Sunny finally let go. He wrote something, then lifted it up in Hero’s direction. You almost chuckled.

Can they come over every day?’

“Every day might be too much for them, but…”

You looked up, meeting Hero’s eyes as he stared down at you. He brushed some hair from your face, fingers lingering on your skin.

“…You’re welcome to come every night. I’ll prepare extra for you, just in case.”

Your heart thumped in your chest, staring at his smile. Paired with his lidded eyes and his tone of voice–

“Yup! Okay! Yeah!” You jerked your head away, wanting to fan yourself. Hero laughed, and you wondered if he was messing with you on purpose. With a huff, you got out of your chair, about to make your way to the door.

A hand rested on your shoulder, keeping you still. You looked back, and Hero lowered to meet your eyes. “I mean what I said. I’ll always have a plate ready for you, okay?”

Your eyes widened, then narrowed, almost watering. You couldn’t help it. Although you loved your grandma and cherished her to no end, the most you two expressed to each other was light banter and the occasional gesture. No one else in this town was close to you, and you really did keep to yourself. After…what happened, you didn’t have someone you were willing to get close to. It’s why you were so determined to finally befriend someone, and Hero just happened to show up at the perfect time.

And now, Hero was looking at you in a way no one had looked at you before. A man who probably experienced endless tragedies yet still willing to accept a new person as a friend, even someone as oblivious as you.

This place…it really did feel like a home.

Before you let your thoughts trail further, you matched his smile, trying to put in as much emotion and thanks. “Okay. I’ll be sure to come by.” Maybe not every day, since your grandma would get upset, but you would definitely be coming as much as possible.

“Good.” Hero’s hand lingered, finally pulling away. You could still feel the warmth on your shoulder as you waved goodbye to the two, Sunny still looking a little sad you had to go. But, it’s alright–you would be back soon.

And you were excited.

It was nice to finally have a friend.

****

Time passed so quickly that it was fleeting. You supposed that’s what happened when you were enjoying life. Honestly, it was unbelievable how happy you felt day to day, knowing you had a friend you cherished and cared for, and who cared for you.

You went to Hero’s house almost every night, enjoying dinner with him and Sunny. On occasion, instead of baking at home and bringing it over, you’d just bake there instead. Sunny always liked to watch and helped with the small, easier parts of the process. He especially liked when you made cookies because he loved arranging the dough on the tray.

It was lovely. There was…one sad thing, and it’s that if you missed a day of visiting, Sunny would be distraught. After that pinky promise, Sunny had gotten really affectionate, always dragging you around by the hand and wanting you to stay for a long time. It was gradual, so it was already too late to brush Sunny off by the time you noticed the increasing attachment.

You wouldn’t want to anyway. You can see how lonely he gets with just Hero around, wanting people outside of his family to tell him and show him new things. Like friendship bracelets. You showed him how to make some, and he focused on making the best ones he could, eventually presenting them to you and Hero.

Hero was very emotional about it, and you teased him for it, despite also feeling incredibly touched and blessed. Whenever Sunny gave a drawing to you, you always stashed it for safekeeping in a folder with sleeves. They were cherished gifts. You know Hero did the same if they weren’t put up on the fridge.

So it went on like that, you getting more and more comfortable as they got more comfortable with you. It was a long and arduous journey, but you think now finally, if you called Hero your friend, he wouldn’t say otherwise.

Because of that, you decided to show him something that meant a lot to you. If his sign of trust was inviting you into his home and letting you meet his family, and taking off his eyepatch around you, you would do something of a similar caliber.

The sun was setting as you pulled him along through the woods, weaving through trees as if you’d memorized the whole forest. Hero remained quiet as you looked forward, squeezing your hand every once in a while for comfort.

Finally, you reached the destination, happening upon a small clearing. You stood still, seeing the sun rays cast over the headstone in the middle, flowers blooming around the grave.

“Hero…I want you to meet my brother.”  You spoke quietly, lowering your head. Hero nodded slowly, letting you bring him forward. It was the first time you led someone else here. No one would accidentally find this place, as it was out of the way of any path and deep within the forest.

You stood in front of the grave with a gentle step, smiling softly. “Hi, Isaac. I have someone I want you to meet.” You then looked at Hero, tilting your head. Hero’s eyes were shaking, focused on you. “His name is Hero. And…he is someone very important to me.” You felt like ‘friend’ didn’t cut it.

Hero’s eyes widened briefly, lips parting with a question, but one he didn’t ask. Instead, he just accepted your words, melting into a warm expression and turning to the gravestones. “It’s nice to meet you, Isaac.”

You lowered your head. “It’s been a long time now, hasn’t it? I still miss you every day.” It was words you’d always said, easily rolling off your tongue. You would never stop missing him, not when he was taken from you so soon.

After a little time, you decided to say goodbye, wanting to bring Hero to the next place that was special to you. It was hard remaining in the clearing, always bringing tears to your eyes.

Hero stayed quiet, and when you looked back at him, he seemed lost in thought. You didn’t blame him. You really hadn’t said all that much, except that you grew up with your grandma. You never mentioned anyone else. You rarely even thought about your brother because it…you still weren’t over it.

It still hurt.

Finally, you made it to where you wanted. Besides a large tree was a bench painted with obnoxious colors and patterns. You brought Hero over and gestured for him to sit. You followed, and sighed.

“Me and my little brother used to play in the forest all the time. We’d get up to a lot of trouble. After finding it one day, we vandalized this bench and marked it as our property.” You laughed softly, shaking your head. “Really, we were big troublemakers.”

Hero listened, still holding your hand. You appreciated it.

“He…died a long time ago. It was sudden. I…I never got to say goodbye. One day he was bugging me in the kitchen about making cookies, and the next, he was gone. He was just a kid. We were both kids. And…”

You couldn’t help but tear up. “Even after all this time, I still think about him every day. And, seeing Sunny, I just…I’m jealous, you know? Sunny is healthy and happy and you protect him so well, but I…I wasn’t vigilant enough. I was too careless. And Isaac…I can’t ever take back what’s been done.”

Hero put an arm over your shoulder, pulling you into his side. You leaned into him, wiping at your eyes. “If you don’t mind me asking…what happened?” His voice was low, gentle as to avoid startling you.

“He drowned.” Your lips pressed together in a thin smile, looking up at Hero with blurry vision. “He wanted to go swimming, but I didn’t feel like it. We got in a petty fight, and he stormed off on his own, saying he would just play by himself. I didn’t go after him. The last words we exchanged were insults. Can you believe that?” You sniffled, shaking your head. “It’s been over a decade…and I’ve long forgiven myself, but I still can’t help but think, what if? What if I was there? What if I just…sucked it up? Took care of my brother?”

You expected the usual response given to you after talking about it. Sentiments of it not being your fault, no point in regretting as there’s nothing you can do, your brother would want you to live…

But, instead, Hero just…stared. With shaking eyes, he pulled you closer, wrapping his other arm around you. It wasn’t what you expected, but you appreciated it. You already knew all those words and needed no comfort other than a hug.

“I…I feel the same way. A–About Mari.”

That was even more unexpected. “You do?”

“I could’ve stopped what happened to her. Or…well, I like to think I could’ve. But unless I went back in time, I’d have no way of knowing what was wrong. It’s all just me dreaming. It–It took me a long time to accept her death, and even then…it’s not like I can ever love again, not after her. I’ve never had that spark again–that instant knowledge that yes, that person is the one. That’s my soulmate.”

You listened to him speak, brows knitting together as he continued. He seemed to genuinely believe every word he said, and…it made you sad. You felt bad. You two were close now, right? So maybe you could be open about your thoughts. “Hero, what do you think love is?”

“Well, it’s…it’s caring about one another. Understanding each other. A person who, despite everything, will always be there for you. It’s listening, giving time, sharing the real you, deep down, without worry of being abandoned. Its comfort.”

“So, you would say you love Sunny, right?” You smiled softly, beginning to play with the sleeve of his sweater.

“Of course! He’s my family.”

“That means you’ve loved again, doesn’t it?”

“It’s different. I’m talking about…the other kind of love. You can’t fall in love at first sight for the second time, and I don’t think anyone would ever truly feel that way about me again. It’s impossible, and I don’t mind that it is. I’ve long accepted it.” Hero sounded so sure and resolute.

“But that’s not love, is it? Falling in love at first sight, that spark, that’s not really what love is. That’s just how it is in the movies. It’s not that it can’t happen, but…it’s not like that’s the end of it. As you just mentioned, it’s about caring, understanding, and being there for one another. It’s giving time. It’s active because love is active.”

Hero looked confused, staring down at you blankly. You couldn’t help a fond grin, patting your chest.

“You see, as much as love is a feeling, it’s an action. That’s why they say that both sides should be ten percent receiving, ninety percent giving in a relationship. Loving somebody…it’s not all about that first sight. It can take a long time. Understanding someone is a choice, as much as listening and caring are. It doesn't even have to be romantic–love has so many different forms. Sometimes it just comes more quickly, and I think that’s where you’re stuck.”

“Stuck?”

“You’ve decided you aren’t lovable, haven’t you? You can’t fall in love again because you can’t imagine yourself being vulnerable and impulsive like you were when you were younger–you can't bring yourself to want romance again, and because of that, you don’t think anyone can love you either. But I don’t think that’s right. Love isn't only in passion or romance–it can be deep bonds, defying what we can even express with words. I think you’re very loveable. You’re kind. You’re understanding, caring, comforting…all those things you said love was. So how come you think you can’t love or be loved again?”

Hero’s lips parted, wide eyes meeting yours. A new expression smothered his face, one you’d never seen before. He looked overwhelmed. Panicked, almost. “You’re only saying those things because I’m…I’m pretending to be charming. I’m always putting up a front.”

“…Yeah, I know. That’s old news. I figured that out in the first week of talking to you.” You rose a brow, and Hero began stammering.

“What? Then why didn’t you say anything? Why didn’t you get angry?”

“Because it’s obviously a way to protect yourself. Why would I take that away from you? And besides, now that we’re closer, don’t you see that you’ve slowly stopped trying to be so perfect? You don’t correct your laughs or your smile anymore. Plus, the way you act toward Sunny obviously isn’t fake, so I could see where the front ended. I care about you a lot, Hero. I pay attention to all these things.”

“But…” Hero was pulling you further into him, arms more firmly keeping you in place. “No…you still don’t know the half of it. The real me…you wouldn’t like the real me at all. You wouldn’t want to be around me anymore.”

“How do you know that?” You challenged. You knew him pretty well at this point and had long figured out much of his behavior and actions. This was a critical moment, you knew. After this, maybe he would really start to trust you. He’d never been so vulnerable before.

“I just know, okay? Everyone else–” Hero bit down on his tongue, eyes narrowing. You already heard it, though.

“So you met people who didn’t take well to who you are? People besides Mari and Sunny?”

“…Yes. I’ve just come to accept it. I once…had a really, really dear friend, but…he…” Hero shuddered. “I trusted him, and I really thought he would accept me. But he didn’t, and I…I just…”

“Well, then that person didn’t deserve you. Simple. You’ve gotten so used to strangers being terrible that you forgot Mari and Sunny were once strangers too, didn’t you? Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get unlucky. I’ve sure met my share of awful people–there’s a reason I don’t ever leave this town for long. But I’ve also met good people. Like you.” You reached up, turning your arm to pat his head. It was a little awkward, but you made do.

Hero’s arms circled your torso, head lowering to rest on your shoulder. You could feel his fast heart rate and hear his stuttering breaths.

“S–So…” Hero swallowed, almost squeezing you. “No matter…who the real me is…you’ll accept it? You’ll accept me? You’ll still…care about me?” He almost sounded like a different person, with a heavy, desperate edge to his voice.

“Of course.”

“Promise?” Hero’s voice cracked, and his embrace became suffocating.

“I promise. Even better, I pinky promise.” You joking lifted a pinky, trying to lighten the mood. But, it seemed Hero was in his own world, mumbling to himself.

“You promised…” Hero sounded breathless. “You really…you really promised…you said you care about me a lot. You said I was loveable. You…you really like me. You like me, right? Right?

Ah, it seems you’ve hit a really touchy spot. But you didn’t mind reassuring him at all. This was a significant moment! And you honestly did care for him, very deeply. So it’s not like you had to lie. You just had to say your honest thoughts out loud.

“I like you. Why else would I hang out with you as much as I do if I didn’t enjoy your company? I think you’re great.” You then smiled. “What, you don’t like me?” You teased. You also noticed his grip may get painful soon…seems he didn’t know his strength. A big bear hug...at least it was warm.

“No, I…I do…like you.” Hero paused. “I…like you. I like you. I really do like you. I…”

“Alright big guy, I get it. Thank you. I’m glad we feel the same.” He was like a broken record, and you smoothly cut him off. It’s like he’s hit some big realization, stuck in disbelief.

“I didn’t think…I’d ever like anyone else again.” Hero began to laugh lightly, resting his chin on your head. “Mari would’ve adored you.”

…That one surprised you. You were touched, but you felt a little off for some reason. It was probably just because you weren’t used to Hero–or really anyone–being so affectionate. You don’t think you’ve ever been held so tenderly yet tightly. And his words, they just…carried a lot of weight.

“I’m so happy. Oh, Sunny’s going to be so excited.” Hero rambled, then leaned forward. “Speaking of, the sun is setting. We should head back for dinner!” He then stood up with a big smile…without putting you down. He carried you for a few steps until you raised your hand, waving it in front of his face.

“Hero, I can walk.” You grinned, amused at how one-track-minded he is.

Hero blinked, looking down then at your face. “Oops. I guess it’s a force of habit.” He put you down very carefully, adjusting your clothing back into the right place after he did. He also leaned down and…

What. Did he just kiss the top of your head? You flushed, waving your arms at your sides. Hero laughed at your reaction, naturally grabbing your hand as you did earlier to lead you back to the house.

You were happy it went well. You felt so much closer to Hero after sharing such a sore part of your past, as well as talking to him about his insecurities. He was willing to be open with you and listen, and now you two could trust each other fully.

…But, for some reason, you get this feeling.

Watching the back of Hero’s head as you both walked, seeing him habitually turning around to check on you as if you’d disappear at any second–it made you wonder.

Maybe…

Maybe you were a little in over your head.

****

You’re not really sure what you were expecting to happen after that day. You knew some things would change and expected Hero to be more open with you.

But, you were unprepared for the extent of the attention he suddenly bombarded you with. It started with him asking you to come every night for dinner, which you had already been trying to do for Sunny. But you couldn’t while Joyce still needed you. You would try to hang out a little during the day instead, but you couldn’t even do that at times.

Sometimes you would just stay home because you were tired, only leaving to wander the town. It was a bit of a drag walking to his house. What you didn’t expect was for him to start coming in to look for you, asking where you are. The townspeople all loved him and seemed excited by the prospect of you two getting closer, so…they always guided him right to you.

One day you had been cooking when your grandma barged in with Hero behind her, prattling off about random things. Hero had gone directly to you, naturally taking over cooking duty like a true gentleman. Of course, you didn’t mind, but…it felt odd. You just had to listen to Joyce gush about him while he occasionally turned and smiled at you, and it…

Was he always like that? Did he always have eyes like that? It wasn’t bad, per se. It just made you kind of flustered. Even Joyce noticed, giving you looks and wiggling her eyebrows. You always hushed her.

Things continued like that–you consistently over at Hero’s house, hanging out with him and Sunny. Hero didn’t shy away from physical affection anymore, constantly hugging and finding ways to get close to you. You know he was someone who needed things like contact for reassurance, considering what Sunny’s told you. So, it was nice to know he saw you as someone to rely on.

It took a little to get used to, though. Sometimes you’d just get trapped in a cuddle for a few hours. You’d try and signal Sunny for help, but the twerp would just leave you to suffer, finally not the only one bearing his brother’s overbearing attention.

Not that Sunny wasn’t also a koala. It seems like he and Hero had some type of talk because Sunny dropped all hesitation after that day and would latch onto you whenever given the chance. You didn’t mind.

When Sunny first spoke to you, you couldn’t hide that you got emotional. You cried. He reminded you of your little brother you lost, and it was just too much in that moment. Sunny comforted you so kindly, reassuring you that he wouldn’t disappear like Isaac.

…You don’t remember telling Sunny about Isaac, but you figure it must’ve slipped when you were emotional. It would make sense. Sunny just wanted to help and comfort you, and it worked well. You felt better knowing Sunny wouldn’t ever be in that type of danger, especially not under Hero’s watch.

You were happy. Your patience had paid off, and now you were very close to Hero, with Sunny like a little brother to you.

But…

Things seemed to be escalating?

You weren’t sure if maybe it was an exaggeration, but as the days continued, things seemed to elevate. Sunny would cry whenever you had to leave, and it hurt your heart to go. Every single day, witnessing the poor thing sob and think you won’t come back…it was painful. Not even Hero could console him.

Hero. Hero was constantly seeking you out whenever you weren’t at his house. He was always looking for you, not even giving you a day to breathe. It didn’t even click that it was weird until Joyce actually brought it up. She was teasing, but…she seemed worried. No one else in town was, merely thinking Hero was courting you.

But it wasn’t that. You knew Hero wouldn’t be interested in that after Mari, as he’d said so himself. You were just really, really dear friends. It…seemed a little beyond that, but you had no label in your mind to put to it. It was like a limbo, never crossing over.

Things had been so slow for so long as you chipped away at Hero’s guard that you were unprepared for when it fell. Maybe you never thought it would, deep down. But that was proven wrong. And now it’s like you have a clingy puppy who gets sad when you don’t spend every waking moment with it.

Then the first sleepover.

Sunny had been especially upset, and you just couldn’t bear it that night. He’d begun thrashing around while Hero tried to calm him down, and you were worried he would hurt himself, so you stayed.

You intended to sleep on the couch, but Hero seemed offended at the notion of that, saying it was terrible for your back. He then offered his own bed, saying he’d take the couch instead. You both went back and forth for a long while until Sunny piped up, mentioning something about sharing. Hero seemed to like the idea, offering to share with you. You thought you heard Sunny mumble "I meant me..." under his breath, but you must have imagined it.

Hero slept like an octopus. He went to bed on his side, curled away and giving you space. But at some point, you woke up in the middle of the night to Hero sprawled out over you, sleeping peacefully. You couldn’t even move–he kept you in place. At least he didn’t snore. He was mortified in the morning and apologized profusely, but honestly, you didn’t really care at this point. It’s not like he didn’t already hug you for hours while watching movies without a break.

Sunny and Hero were the clingiest people you’ve ever met, and it went from cute to concerning over the span of a few weeks. You might’ve been right about being in over your head. You went out of your way to knock down the walls of two very traumatized people, and should’ve realized the responsibility would be a lot to bear.

Still, though. It was alright because you liked spending time with them. You were incredibly content, having long desired such consistent and deep relationships. Especially one who you could see as a sibling.

Sunny was utterly different from Isaac, so it’s not like you were projecting. It was just being able to take care of someone again that made you happy. You had someone to look out for. It had somehow spread to Hero as well.

You’re not sure when, but you’d begun patting Hero’s head a lot. You always had to reach up due to his height, so it was awkward, but Hero started to lower his head when he expected it. He anticipated it at times, even when you weren’t going to. He’ll just bend over and stay awkwardly craned until you pat him.

It’s cute and surprisingly childish of him, and you didn’t mind indulging. Considering he’s only spent time with Sunny for who knows how long, Hero would want to have someone look after him sometimes. You didn’t mind fulfilling that.

Everything was going okay. You could manage it. It was a little challenging to balance, but nothing genuinely outrageous had happened, so it’s alright.

You were happy.

****

Joyce was sick.

It’s not that you were completely blindsided by it–she was an older woman, and it was a miracle she had been so healthy for so long, especially considering genetics. But still. It was painful. When she smiled at you brightly coming back from the doctor, you thought everything was fine.

It wasn’t.

She smiled, pretending it was okay. But nothing was. She was dying, she had been ill for years without telling you, and you couldn’t do anything. The last of your family was about to leave you.

…The least you can do is pretend you didn’t see the files she hid from you. Instead, you just spent more time with her, taking care of her, making sure she was happy. You acted no different than before, and you knew she appreciated it.

But you didn’t have time to tell Hero and Sunny what happened. You kind of forgot about them.

Hero came knocking at your door, wondering why you didn’t visit. You pulled him aside and told him what was going on, and he offered to help. You appreciated it, but it couldn’t be obvious what he was doing. Your grandma was like that, not wanting to inconvenience anyone.

So he started helping out too. You felt terrible about Sunny, but Hero told you he was handling it, despite the obvious lie that Sunny was taking your absence well. You can’t worry about that now–you promise you’ll somehow make it up to him.

You just needed to enjoy the time you had left with Joyce.

She died.

Quietly, in her sleep. A peaceful smile on her face. Your last words were gentle teasing, smiling without saying out loud that you love one another. It was a much more heartfelt goodbye that actually allowed closure.

She told you about wanting to be cremated and spread in the woods, saying she wanted to become nature. Dutifully you fulfilled her wish, Hero soothing you as you cried by his side. It was grief, but it was warm. You missed her already, but…you got to say goodbye. And she had already lived a long, plentiful life.

It would take a while to get used to her not being around, and many of the other townsfolk shared sentiments about her liveliness. You couldn’t help the melancholy that tainted your days, leaving you wanting to rest in bed instead of seeing anyone.

...

Hero wouldn’t leave you alone.

You realize it’s worry, probably not used to seeing you so lethargic. You tried to tell him it’s alright, maybe just give you time, but…

Hero didn’t listen. He was worried out of his mind, saying he couldn’t handle you being in bed for a year. You’re not sure where that idea came from. Was it projection? Was that what his grief did to him? Did it happen to Sunny? You tried calming him down, but it didn’t work.

With a sigh, you let Hero bring you to his house once again. You cheered up, realizing that being with people you love will ease your grief and take your mind off it.

…Love. Hmm, you guess you did love the two of them. You wouldn’t admit it for fear of coming across as weird, but Hero and Sunny had become like family to you. Seeing them practically daily for so long, it only made sense.

You were tackled in a tight hug when you opened the door, Sunny loudly sobbing. “You came back…” His voice was meek, and you gently guided him to the couch, sitting down and letting him continue to cling to you.

The poor thing might’ve thought you abandoned him. While soothing Sunny, you glanced back at Hero, who…looked upset. Not at you, no. He was looking elsewhere, at the front door, a crease between his brows while his hands twitched.

He closed the door.

…Did you imagine that sound just then?

Or had the door always made a click noise when closing?

“I’ll make dinner, okay?” Hero walked over and spoke softly, reaching over to rub Sunny’s head. Sunny completely tucked himself into your side, refusing to let go as he sniffled. Hero turned on the T.V with a sigh, handing you the remote. “Here. I already put his favorite movie in. It should help calm him down.”

With a kind yet tired smile, Hero went to the kitchen. You frowned.

That exhaustion…was your fault, wasn’t it? Without warning, you disappeared from Sunny’s life despite knowing how he was and how upset he probably would be. You just told yourself he’d get over it.

It was awful of you. Didn’t you already decide not to make the same mistakes as in the past? But you did it again, and now Sunny was so, so scared. Guilt overshadowed the feeling of loss–your grandmother pushed further back into your mind as you comforted the shaking boy.

Don’t leave…don’t leave again…please don’t leave me too…”

Your heart broke.

How terrible were you?

You chewed on your bottom lip, trying to suppress your tears.

“I won’t…” The voice crack was harsh, almost painful. “I won’t leave you. I won’t…”

Hero watched from the kitchen, silently and out of sight.

He was smiling.

****

“I…” You stared, speechless, as Hero brought bags into the room. Clothes. All of your clothes. “Hero? What’s this?” You stood up and walked over, not minding how Sunny grabbed the bottom of your shirt and followed like a little duckling.

“This?” Hero smiled brightly. “Oh, you said you needed a change of clothes after sleeping over. So I just brought it to you. Saves you the annoying walk, right?”

You blinked.

“I…did say that. But I’m not so picky with what I wear that you needed to bring my entire closet for me to choose from.” You sighed, rubbing your forehead. Hero tilted his head in an exaggerated motion, still smiling.

“Well, you would bring them all over soon anyway, so I just thought to do it myself. Now you don’t have to worry about it. Oh, I got some of your other important stuff too. Here, let me go get the backpack…”

“Important stuff?” You were confused. Did he mean toiletries? That was thoughtful. You don’t really want to borrow things like toothbrushes.

“Yup!” Hero brought over a bag, setting it on the ground. It was clearly heavy, what with the way his muscles tensed as he lowered it gently. “I got all the stuff from your bathroom–” So it was toiletries. That was thoughtful. “–and all the items in your desks that I know are sentimental to you. If I missed anything, just tell me, okay? I can run right back into town and get it for you, no problem.”

“Hero…”

“Yes?”

“What’s going on? Why did you bring all my stuff?” You were oblivious a lot of the time, but at least with something this obvious, you could catch on. Sort of. You were still bewildered. “Is there a problem? Did something happen?” Maybe your house burnt down or something?

“You’re going to stay here. Naturally, I’m going to get all your precious things.” An innocent smile, one accompanied by clear, joyful eyes.

“…What? Did…did I say I was staying here?”

“You don’t remember?” Hero slumped, completely crestfallen. “Oh…I just…I got so excited, and I know Sunny would be…I…” He lowered his head, hiding his expression. “I–I’m sorry. I just thought…no, that’s stupid of me.”

Quickly, you stepped forward, habitually raising your hand and placing it on his head. “Hero, don’t be so sad. I’m the one who’s sorry. I must’ve forgotten our conversation. Was it late?”

“Last night…” Hero mumbled, the image of a kicked puppy.

“I was exhausted last night. It could explain why I don’t remember. But…where am I going to sleep if I were to even stay?”

“In my bed.” Hero said, as if it was obvious. Sunny puffed up his cheeks, mumbling, "me too!".

“Oh.”

You guess it wasn’t that out there, considering you often used Hero's bed during sleepovers–sometimes you would stay with Sunny, if he asked first. But, if it was for more than just a day every once in a while…it felt kind of–really intimate. You knew Hero didn’t see you in a purely romantic light, and neither you did he. It seemed impossible on either end. The bond you two had was beyond friendship, but still not crossing a boundary.

Certain emotions were closed off. For you, because you never had an interest in the first place. And for Hero, it’s because Mari still lived on in his heart. Forever, probably. There’s a reason he never took off his ring.

So…maybe it was fine? You were just overthinking it? Sharing a bed was pretty normal, considering the context of your relationship thus far. You already would share with Sunny often too, and he was always so happy, clearly seeing you like family. And...It’s not like Hero hasn’t just cuddled you for hours on end, so…

“You there?” Hero waved a hand in front of your face. You blinked rapidly, coming back from your thoughts.

“Yeah, yeah. Sorry, I zoned out.” You gave a sheepish grin, still reeling from everything. So you were staying over? For…the foreseeable future? Did you really agree to that? Did you propose it? Maybe…? Dealing with grief alone would be miserable, so…

“Do I have to unpack?” You grimace. You really didn’t feel like it.

Hero brightened up, quickly whipping his face away from you. “Nope! I can do it for you!” He hurriedly grabbed some of the bags, rushing off into his room before you could say anything else.

You stood, speechless.

“…You’re not leaving?”

Sunny looked up at you with wide eyes, today being one of the rare days he went sans an eyepatch. You softened, patting his head.

“I’m not. I promised, right?”

“You…broke it.”

“Huh?”

“Your promise.” Sunny’s hand was gripping the fabric of your shirt tightly, knuckles white. “To come tomorrow. You didn’t.”

“Sunny…” Your brows furrowed. “Are you talking about…that pinky promise? After our first dinner?” He still remembered that?

“You promised to come tomorrow.” He was getting worked up. “You didn’t. You were gone…for so many tomorrows…” Sunny sniffled, trying to remain firm. “You broke it…

“Oh, Sunny.” You pulled him into a gentle hug, feeling him still refuse to let go of your shirt. “That day…I was promising only for that day. I still shouldn’t have left you alone for so long, though.”

“New promise.” Sunny demanded, tugging. “New…new one…new promise…”

“Okay, okay. A new promise. Let’s make a new promise.” You kept holding him, heart aching in your chest. You really hurt him. “I will always be there tomorrow, as long as I can help it. Things might get in the way sometimes, but–”

No.” Sunny interrupted. You paused, trying to figure out what to say. You wanted to keep things realistic, knowing at some point you won’t be able to see him every day. Things happen. But he might not want to hear that.

“I will do everything in my power to see you, okay? The only reason I wouldn’t is if is something got in the way, alright?”

“…Won’t.”

“Won’t?”

“Won’t ever…get in the way.”

“Hm?”

“Nothing…will,” Sunny said it kindly, as if reassuring you. “Big brother will help.”

“I see.” You sighed fondly, finding it sweet how much faith he had in Hero. “Okay, then my promise is this!” You pulled back, staring into Sunny’s eyes. “I will always do everything in my power to see you for every tomorrow there is. And if something happens, your big brother will help. Only when your big brother and I fail will I not see you. I promise.”

Sunny seemed satisfied with that. He really did have complete confidence in Hero solving any issue. It was cute.

“Pinky promise?” Sunny lifted his hand, expectant. You grinned, linking pinkies.

“Pinky promise.”

****

You brought a heavy responsibility unto yourself without realizing it.

It’s not the smartest thing in the world to recklessly befriend and endear yourself to two very traumatized people, especially when you don’t really even know the whole story. You made up your mind on what happened, and that was that. You were determined. You broke down Hero, and Sunny’s walls and…kind of became part of the family.

It was nice. At some point, you weren’t sure when, you had let slip you loved them. The glowing, happy looks you received in return filled you with so much warmth. You’d never been happier than when you spent time with them. You’ve never felt so wanted and needed. It was lovely.

But it scared you sometimes.

You resigned yourself to living there because why would you live in the place your grandmother left in? It was lonely without her warmth, and there was no point in staying in misery there. Moving into Hero’s place was ideal, and Sunny was so happy that you didn’t even have time to doubt anything.

As you stayed you learned how to be a better person to the two. You learned to comfort Sunny when he had nightmares or randomly dissociated. You got better at handling the expressions he made. You still cried often, though, when met with his face. It was clear Sunny went through hell, with how clingy and shaky he would be after a flashback. You ended up sleeping in Sunny's bed with him safely curled into your side more often than not.

Hero was…a little different. While Sunny was emotional and vulnerable to you all the time, Hero seemed restrained. After that day on the bench, when you two talked, he hadn’t shown that side of him again. It’ll be a slow process getting him to fully trust you all the time. He clearly wasn’t used to letting his guard down.

…But then, at times, Hero broke down. It was always at night when the two of you were alone. Sunny had once talked to you about it–how his brother sometimes seemed like a different person, begging for comfort, needing heavy reassurance and affection. Sunny said it was overwhelming, but his brother needed it.

Now that you were there, Hero didn’t need to always go to Sunny for that comfort. He still did, of course. There were things between them you would never understand–you didn’t experience the past they did. Now, Hero just sought you out too at times.

If he woke from a nightmare, you would wake up too. You would see him in a panic, crying, looking around frantically. He’d launch out of bed, and you would follow. He always went to Sunny’s room, checking to ensure he was still there. Then, after a shaky sigh of relief, he would turn to you.

And, sometimes, while staying with Sunny, you would wake up in the middle of the night, groggily opening your eyes. You would see a figure sitting at the end of the bed, watching you both, silhouette familiar. You always drifted back off, deciding it was you imagining it. And if it wasn't your imagination, well...

You liked being relied on. The two now needed you around, and you’d come to need them too.

So why…did you sometimes get this feeling?

This weird suffocating clenching of your lungs, heart rising into your throat.

Sunny, at times…

Sunny was strange.

Be it mentions of a mysterious, lost imaginary friend who he seemed to somehow mourn or the random bursts of a lowered tone and non–childish motions...

Sometimes it’s like a veil would be lifted, and you didn't know how to respond when he looked at you with such wide, fearful eyes at the thought of you going away.

“Don’t leave me here alone with him,” Sunny would say. “Please stay.”

He once even called you someone else’s name.

Omori. It seems to be that lost imaginary friend. You’re not sure how one can lose something like that, but apparently, it happens. Even against Sunny’s will. After he’d said the name, he’d zoned out completely. With visible confusion, he cried.

As if even he didn’t know who it was he missed.

You needed to get fresh air. Not that you couldn’t–you always did. Often you’d play outside with Sunny, Hero not far away. You taught him how to feed some of the small animals in the woods safely, noting that they weren't skittish around Sunny like they were Hero. Along with that, watching the stars with them was especially wonderful–and once, you all even had a picnic by your brother’s grave. It was all you could ask for. It was perfect.

But the people in town…you missed them.

You’re not sure why, but you almost asked Hero for permission to leave. It was such a strange impulse. So, you quickly wrote it off, instead deciding you would just go for a bit of a walk. Hero was busy working in his office, so you shouldn't bother him. Sunny was sleeping peacefully on the couch as a movie marathon played, so if you didn’t happen to come back before he woke, he should be pacified.

Not like you’d be gone for long. You planned on getting back before Sunny woke up.

And with a spring in your step, you went into town. Everyone greeted you with kind, sad smiles, sympathetic as they gave condolences for your loss. There was pity, probably believing you became a shut-in from grief. Which…wasn’t entirely untrue, was it?

Either way, you enjoyed your short trip seeing everyone again, laughing as you share old memories of Joyce. Then, with a basket of treats from everyone, you walked back up the path to Hero’s house. Sunny would love these snacks. You were excited to share.

But as you neared, you heard yelling–desperate and strained, horrifying to your ears. You dropped the basket and ran, mind going blank. The assumption was Sunny woke up afraid, but…you’d never imagined he could make such a loud sound.

And you were right.

Sunny couldn’t be that loud.

It was Hero.

What happened? What could have possibly happened?

You ran to the front door, swinging it open recklessly in your shaky fear. Clearly, now you could hear what Hero was screaming, and…

SUNNY!?”

The house was wrecked.

Petrified, you watched Hero wildly run around, searching. Along with Sunny’s name, he shouted yours as well.

Hero…?” You managed to get out, unable to react appropriately to the scene. Despite you being so quiet, it seemed Hero could hear you. He whipped his head around, eyes darting around before landing on you. He stumbled toward you soon after, reaching out and pulling you into his arms.

He was incomprehensible.

Hero buried his head in your shoulder, holding you so tightly it was painful. You wished you could understand what he was saying. You lifted a shaky hand, placing it on his head and gently petting him to hopefully relax him.

You didn’t know what to say, so you kept quiet. Hero didn’t seem to be calming down. You were crying. It hurt so badly seeing him in this state. You smelled metal.

Oh god.

“Hero, Hero, please. What’s happening? Why…why do I smell blood?” You trembled, breath hitching.

Can’t find Sunny–can’t find–thought–thought they turned you against me–thought you took sunny and left–”

You managed to catch onto a more coherent explanation. It was still hard to understand how Hero's words slurred together and overlapped, but you got it.

“Sunny’s gone?” You whispered. Where could he go? Why…would he go anywhere? He hated being alone, right? What happened? “If he’s not here, let’s look outside. Okay? Before we jump to the worst-case scenario, let’s just look outside.”

Worst case being that…their old family came. God, you hoped not. You only left for a little bit, and you wouldn’t be able to take it if something happened. It would be your fault. “I’m sorry. I should’ve told you…I went into town. I brought back snacks–well, I dropped them when I heard you, but…”

Finally, Hero pulled away while you rambled, tremors wracking his body. He stared down at you fixedly, nodding. “Let’s find him. He…he’s around. He’s not far. Right? Right!?

“O–Of course.” You didn’t know. But you had to lie. Hero was going to lose it, and now–

You…knew where the blood came from.

Hero stepped back, grabbing your hand. He opened the front door and brought you with him, looking around and continuing to call Sunny’s name. You joined.

You ignored the tight cluster in your chest, unable to stop looking at Hero’s arms. It wasn’t too terrible–they were only a little raw. But now you felt like you knew where his scars came from.

It seems…there was a way he relieved intense emotion, whether consciously or not. It broke your heart. It looked so painful. You…would talk to him about it later, after finding Sunny. Finding Sunny was most important.

As the minutes passed, as the hours went on, you two looked everywhere. You felt worse and worse each passing second, old memories rising that you wanted to forget. It wasn’t safe to be alone in the woods for so long. At one point, you two even went into town, you telling Hero to stay back as you asked. After all, if they saw Hero, you…weren’t sure how they’d think of him. You were understanding, but others may not be.

Hero looked terrible. Arms roughed up and expression haunted, barely able to speak in his stress. You felt so afraid for both Hero and Sunny. You hoped Sunny was okay.

Sunny needed to be okay.

…No one in town had seen him. They quickly soothed you, saying they hadn’t seen any strangers either, promising to keep an eye out. You would invite them to help search in the woods, but most of them were older and couldn’t do strenuous activity–plus, if Sunny saw a stranger, you’re sure he’d run away.

“We’ll find him.” You assured Hero.

And he just held your hand like it was a lifeline. You gripped it tightly, worried that it would trail to his wounds if you let go.

The sun was beginning to set.

You were panicking.

What if something happened?

What if…what if just like Isaac…

The two of you had begun running around, voices raw from shouting for hours. You never strayed too far from each other, even when splitting up.

On a whim, you ended up heading to the nearby river. You weren’t sure why. Was it because of your fears? Your guilt? Almost tripping over yourself with each step, you continued forward. Despite the way you couldn’t breathe, your growing anxiety…

You just needed to check.

You had to know…he wasn’t there.

He’d heard about your brother, right? So sunny should’ve listened and remembered to stay away from water. But if he was alone and scared, he may get confused…

There were footprints at the riverbank.

You think you screamed. Your ears were ringing so loudly that you didn’t even hear Hero approaching you. You couldn’t process him hugging you, trying to soothe you as you settled into a waking nightmare.

Hero guided your eyes before you could completely lose yourself, guiding you to look down. He pointed, showing that although there were footprints toward the water, there were also ones leading away. Hero half carried half supported you while you both followed the tracks in the dirt.

You couldn’t breathe.

Each step was agonizing. You couldn’t shake it–you felt like Sunny was in there. You felt like Sunny was in the water, trying to come up, waiting for his family to save him. Just like you always imagined Isaac did, reaching up to the surface, wondering why no one came.

Sobs wracked your chest with each step.

Until, finally, you went to the clearing where Isaac rested.

Sunny was by your brother’s grave, hugging the basket you had brought from town with visible tear tracks, mouth moving as if he’d been speaking. From his place on the ground, he looked up, eyes widening. You and Hero both rushed forward, Sunny placing the basket aside.

Hero would reach him first, but…

Sunny dodged, wailing as he half stumbled, half crawled to you.

He latched on once you dropped down to your knees.

You were stunned, embracing him and running your trembling hand through his hair.

I thought you left…I thought you left…I wanted to look for you…”

It was your fault.

Hero pulled you and Sunny into his arms, sitting so his legs and arms caged you both in. He was mumbling again. You couldn’t understand.

You don’t know how long you all stayed like that. Hero wouldn’t budge whatsoever, and Sunny wouldn't let go even after calming down.

Why didn’t you just say you were going?

Why didn’t you think?

Over and over it’d been shown to you that Sunny needed to know what was happening. If you were to leave, you have to say so. Because otherwise, he will assume it’s forever. He won’t understand.

Now, he even searched for you. Instead of getting Hero or throwing a tantrum, he mustered up the courage to leave home alone for the first time. And without thinking, you asked. You asked why he would look for you alone. “Why didn’t you get Hero…? Wouldn’t that help with the searching?"

“…Big brother…would be sad and scared…” Sunny lifted his head just enough to glance at Hero’s arms, eyes watering. “But…he…still got scared. He found you…I couldn’t find you…I can’t do anything…” Sunny hiccupped, shaking his head.

“Oh, Sunny…” You wished Hero would speak to help you comfort Sunny, but he was completely out of it. Hero looked to be somewhere else entirely, expression stoic, eyes completely unreadable. “Sunny, I’m sorry. I should’ve told you I went to get you snacks. See? They’re in that basket right there. I’m dumb for not telling you.”

Sunny sniffled, looking over to the grave. “Snacks…I shared…”

“Shared?” You blinked.

“Isaac…I gave some.”

How were you supposed to respond to that? This moment was beyond bittersweet, guilt eating away at you mercilessly.

“They…were tasty.” Sunny attempted a smile, looking at you with those big, clear eyes. He then glanced up at Hero, bottom lip trembling. “I’m…sorry for scaring you, big brother…” He looked down, ashamed.

Hero didn’t speak for a moment, looking down at him. Then, slowly, a smile rose. “No…it’s okay. I understand. You were very kind to think of my feelings, but…next time, please tell me. Please. Your big brother needs to know where you are. I…I thought you were taken from me again.”

Sunny nodded meekly, leaning on his chest. Hero finally relaxed–just a little–patting Sunny’s head. Sunny continued to cry, saying he was sorry, but Hero just soothed him patiently. You were…proud. You were relieved. You were worried Hero would get angry for a split second, but you should’ve known better by now. Hero was the kindest, most patient person you’ve ever met.

He really was a saint.

Hero looked at you.

You…distinctly felt…

“Why did you leave without saying anything? You know it upsets Sunny. Something terrible could’ve happened to you, then what would we do? You're too important. Why did you leave?”

“I–I just–”

You felt…

“It was going to be a quick trip, and Sunny was asleep, and you were working, and I didn’t want to bother you, and I thought it would be fine, so I just–I just went. I didn’t think this would happen. I…didn’t think at all.”

“I understand.” Hero smiled more warmly.

“I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.” You hurried out, feeling sweat gathering at your brow. His eyes–his voice–they didn’t match his grin. You felt small. You were small. Hero, sitting like this, you felt like he towered over you. His hand was warm around you, keeping you from moving.

“I know…I know you won’t, my starlight.” Hero lowered his head, resting it on top of yours.

That…nickname…

You were…happy, you think. It made you happy to have a nickname like Sunny. You were special to Hero. You couldn't deny it. But being special to Hero…

It’s probably best you don’t think about it too deeply.

Right now, you would focus on the present.

“How about we share the rest of the snacks?” You proposed, trying to keep a lighthearted tone. Your voice was raspy, and it would probably be gone tomorrow.

“That sounds perfect,” Hero spoke gently, then glanced at Sunny. “I hope you didn’t already eat all of them already, Sunny.”

Sunny shook his head. “Share.”

“Aw, my little brother is so generous.” Hero cooed, briefly moving to grab the basket and returning. He pulled you two back close to him, leaving you and Sunny to open the basket as he held you both in his arms.

“There’s some apple crisp in here. I know you love anything with apples, Hero.” You grinned, and Hero hummed, looking content.

It was getting dark, but it wouldn’t take long to eat.

And when you guys were done, and Hero picked Sunny up and grabbed your hand firmly, you were relieved. Everything ended up being okay.

Thankfully, this troubling moment passed without consequence.

It really served to just bring you all closer once again. You fully realized that you were important to them.

You were happy it all worked out. You're so glad you didn't lose this second chance.

And you wouldn't be so stupid and unthoughtful again.

****

When you first met Hero, you never thought your life would change so drastically. You just wanted to befriend this new, mysterious person haunted by the past.

When you first met Sunny, you never thought you would start to think of him as your little brother, a second chance at being happy with a family.

You were content because you were needed, appreciated, and cared for. You didn’t complain because you had all you could ever want. You were never ambitious, happy to spend every day with your loved ones without thinking too deeply about it.

So as time went on, as you left the house less and less, you thought of it as normal. When one day, you went to just quickly get a breath of fresh air only to find the front door locked, you thought nothing of it.

When you mentioned going anywhere and were met with Hero and Sunny’s crestfallen expressions, you always caved. Sunny’s strange words, when he mentioned something unfamiliar, and you asked Hero about it, and Hero brushed you off, you were okay with it. It must be too traumatic.

Hero slowly taking over cooking, only letting you help by washing veggies or cleaning like Sunny did…

...

Hero earnestly asking you to not touch dangerous objects, terrified of you getting hurt and losing you...

Sunny, in a panic, grabbing onto you, begging and begging you to never leave, saying that you couldn't leave…

Sunny acting like an adult for a few minutes…

Were you complacent…?

Were you stupid?

No matter how bright the red waved in front of you, you ignored it. Because you were happy.

Because you didn’t have ambition.

And you thought about it, one day if in the future you got bored of being cooped up and wanted to explore…

You would be allowed to, right?

And when you jokingly said it, looking at Hero with knowing eyes…

“No.”

The knowing disappeared.

You were surprised.

…Was it really a conversation worth pursuing, though? Something so pointless that would only serve to upset everyone?

It’s not like you felt like leaving.

Sunny and Hero would be too sad.

When did you become irreplaceable to them?

When did you become important?

When…did you begin realizing this wasn’t something you could back out of?

You didn’t feel trapped.

You loved Sunny and Hero dearly.

But sometimes, their eyes, the suffocating way they clung to you…

Either way, it didn’t matter now. You were in far too deep, far too invested to pull back and change your mind. And that was okay.

Life was good, and you were blessed with people who would never hurt you, a new family you always wanted. A second chance.

So those red flags…

You would ignore.

Until something happened that made you unable to look away any longer, you would continue on this path.

Because you had a family that needed and loved you again.

"Can we watch Monsters Inc. again?" Sunny stretched out across the couch, laying his head in your lap. He wore a pleased expression like a cat, beckoning you to give him attention. You laughed softly, running your fingers through his hair. Hero dutifully got up to put in the movie, sighing.

"We've watched this movie so many times that I practically have it memorized." Hero chuckled, shaking his head. He came back to the couch, and Sunny didn't move. He stayed sprawled out, purposefully leaving no room for his big brother. "...You know I'm just going to pick you up if you don't let me sit, right?" Hero grinned, cocking his head to the side. Sunny puffed his cheeks up, begrudgingly sitting up. The two definitely had their moments of lighthearted teasing, and it was always funny to watch.

Hero plopped down with a smug expression before reaching over and dragging you and Sunny into his arms anyway. Sunny whined but didn't put up a fight. You realized you wanted one of the fluffy blankets and tried getting up. A no go. Sunny and Hero looked at you with matching puppy dog eyes, neither wearing their eyepatches today. "I'm just grabbing a blanket." You laughed, shaking your head fondly.

As the movie played, you three got comfortable under the covers, snuggled up and content.

Toward the movie's end, Sunny dozed off, resting on you and Hero peacefully. His hands gripped the fabric of your shirt and Hero's sweater, twitching in his sleep.

"...He must've been tired." Hero hummed, his eyes also trying to fall shut. He yawned, rubbing his eyes with his free hand. He seemed like he could fall asleep at any moment.

"Seems you are too. Maybe you should've gone to sleep earlier, big guy." You said, leaning into him. You kept watching the movie, always liking the reuniting scene.

"Mm." Hero looked like the peak of relaxation, resting his head on top of yours. "I would never miss time with my people."

The shock that sentence brought you seemed like an overreaction. But you couldn't help it-anytime Hero so directly stated your importance, especially in tandem with Sunny–it made you happy. There was another feeling there too, but it's one you didn't understand. So it must not be significant.

"There you are again, getting sappy while half asleep." You huffed, smiling still. Hero just mumbled something, nuzzling you with a blissful look. "Sometimes, you make me feel way more special than I actually am." You said offhandedly, tired enough that your own filter had loosened.

"Oh?" Hero shifted to get closer, Sunny still comfortably slotted between you two. Hero's eyes met yours, distinctly unbalanced. That gaze...it made you hold your breath. "But you are special, my starlight. Irreplaceable to Sunny and I." It was heartfelt and sincere, words laced with intensity. "You make us happier. You...make Sunny especially happier that it almost makes me jealous. But I'm not. No, I'd never be jealous of you...not when you're both in my arms." He was rambling, eyes lidded from exhaustion. You didn't reply, and so he continued to speak.

"I love you both so much...I wish Mari was here too, then we could have a hug with four people..."

Hero sounded drunk. He must be really, really tired. He didn't often mention his late wife by name.

"My perfect family...with me forever. There's...nothing more I could want..."

His eyes were closing, his voice growing quiet.

"Thank you...for finding us..."

A kiss to your forehead before leaning into you completely.

He'd fallen asleep.

...

You smiled to yourself, also closing your eyes as the movie's end credits played.

Your dreams would be sweet because you were the safest and most content you could ever be.

Just as Hero said...

There's nothing more you could want from life than what's in your arms.

And as you fell asleep, there was one stray thought, a question, one wondering when it was that you stopped thinking about your reservations, your wariness...

...Maybe because you knew, if you explored those concerns and developed sour feelings, you would just be stuck.

It's not like you could leave now.

...

So you would ignorantly rest in this joy, looking forward to the next beautiful day you get to experience in peace.

There was always another tomorrow.

And you would enjoy every single one, forever to come.
