Four Leaf Clover (And How I Found One)

Summary:

"What did you wish for?" Clyde poked him, blowing on his third dandelion.

"I can't tell you, or else it doesn't come true," Craig snorted at Clyde's offended gasp.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier! Now Bebe will never like me!" He whined. "Maybe I can just wish for it again," He blew on yet another dandelion.

If Craig could have one wish, it would be for him to find a four-leaf clover on the first try. That's what he wished for.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Craig never really considered himself a lucky person. When he was 3 years old, his mother stepped on his pet guinea pig and broke its back, killing it. When he was 10 years old, a couple kids from school stole his birthday money and got him in trouble with the government. When he was 13 years old, his little sister 'accidentally' sent a video of him singing a One Direction song to all his friends.

He didn't really believe in superstition, either. He thought that stupid things like unlucky numbers and evil black cats was something only paranoid idiots could believe in.

Of course his best friend, while not being paranoid, happened to be an idiot.

"Dude, dude! It's gonna work, trust me. Saw it online." Clyde paced back and forth across his backyard, picking every dandelion he could find and shoving it into a paper bag.

"What'd you see it on, Pinterest?" Craig mocked, leaning against the icy glass backdoor of his friend's house. Clyde laughed, walking around the outer edge of his pool to look for more unsuspecting plants to rip out of the ground.

Clyde kept talking about all the wishes he would make, which Craig thought was dumb, because isn't that supposed to make them not come true? He decided to not let Clyde know this,'cause it's not like his idea would work anyways. Craig looked up to the sky, the large sun setting behind thick dark clouds. Small drops of rain pattered across the roof, and a large section of clouds opened the heavens. Craig squinted at the melting sun, streaks of yellow and orange threatening to blind him. The moon was probably visible from the other side of the house, and Craig almost wanted to ditch his best friend to look at it.

Craig held his hands to his face to shield his eyes, but beyond the blackness light snuck through. He stumbled a bit, grabbing at his eyes. He bumped into a glass table and knocked over a wooden bowl, chips tumbling to the ground, spilling all over the damp grass. Craig kicked it behind him when Clyde whipped around to look at him.

"Okay, I'm done!" Clyde called out, grinning widely. Craig sighed and walked to the two lawn chairs beside the pool. "Wanna sit on the roof?" Clyde suggested, hopping back and forth on his feet. Craig perked up at the idea.

"Sure." He said, and they snuck past Clyde's dad, who had passed out on the couch while watching a movie, and into his messy room. Clyde swung open his large window and gestured for Craig to hop out onto the roof.

"Ladies first." He joked, and Craig smacked him over the back of the head while crawling onto the roof. He made himself as comfortable as he could. Clyde sat beside him and pulled out two dandelions from his bag.

"What are you gonna wish for?" Clyde asked, eyes shining. Craig scoffed.

"You are such a child." Craig grabbed the plant anyway, waiting for Clyde's mark.

"Okay, now!" Clyde cheered, blowing on his dandelion as hard as he could. The April wind carried the puffballs away quickly. It was dark, now. Craig turned his neck to look at the moon.

"What did you wish for?" He asked Clyde. The lack of light pollution from the tiny, secluded town and the altitude of the mountains it sat on provided them with a beautiful view Clyde had dared compare to his love. Craig thought that comparing the night sky to a person was one of the most ridiculous things he had ever heard.

"For Bebe to like me back." Clyde said matter-of-factly, and pulled out another dandelion for himself. "Do you want another?"

"Nah, I think I'm good with my wish." Craig shrugged, still staring at the sky. He spotted Venus, shifting forward where he sat like it would help him see it better.

"What did you wish for?" Clyde poked him, blowing on his third dandelion.

"I can't tell you, or else it doesn't come true." Craig snorted at Clyde's offended gasp.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier! Now Bebe will never like me!" He whined. "Maybe I can just wish for it again." He blew on yet another dandelion.
