Work Text:
Virgil yawns, exhaustion overwhelming him, as he slumps down against his seatbelt, his eyes closing. The antiseptic smell of the hospital has already faded, and the pain meds he's on keep him from really feeling anything but tired. He feels like his head is supposed to hurt, but it's somewhere to the left, and the same with his wrist.
"Thank you, Patton," he dimly hears Logan say. Logan holds his good hand, his left one, thumb rubbing over his skin in gentle, soothing motions. "I should renew my license, but it has been a while since I've driven..."
"Of course," Patton says from the driver's seat. His voice is soft, and Virgil can tell he's deliberately trying to keep it down for Virgil's sake. Roman's presence fills the front seat, but he too is uncharacteristically quiet. Virgil still appreciates his presence, it makes him feel safe.
"Thank you," Virgil mumbles, his eyes still drooping closed.
"Go to sleep, love," Logan says gently, still soothing him with those soft sweeps of his thumb. He can nearly feel Logan's hesitation, before his other hand starts to comb through Virgil's hair, brushing it out of his face and gently massaging his scalp, avoiding the bandage on his temple. The two-pronged assault is too much, and he finds himself sliding into sleep as the wheels of the car turn, lulling him into a further state of relaxation.
Virgil only stirs when the car door opens. He makes a sleepy noise of protest, but Logan's there again, carefully unclipping his seatbelt and encouraging him to scoot out.
"Just another few minutes, love," Logan says softly. "We're home." Relief floods Virgil at those words, even though the pain meds are starting to wear off. Home. He's safe. Tears prickle his eyes and he feels Logan's thumb gently swipe away the moisture.
Logan sweeps him up in his arms, mindful of his injuries, and carries him into the apartment building, Roman and Patton following behind like ducklings. The familiar confines make Virgil's eyelids begin to droop again, and Logan encourages it in the elevator, murmuring an old lullaby. By the time they enter their apartment and Logan has deposited him on a bed, Virgil's nearly fully asleep, but not quite.
"Stay with me," he mumbles, making grabby hands at Logan despite the twinge of pain in his wrist, and Logan presses a kiss to the unhurt side of his temple.
"Of course, love," he murmurs. "Always."
