Work Text:
Rain slides down the window pane as Virgil gets ready, smearing eye liner around his eyes and occasionally letting his skirt swish around his knees. He's gotten more used to wearing skirts around the apartment and even occasionally out, and today is one of those times. They're going to the library Logan volunteers at so Virgil can check out a few more books about cryptids that have come in, and Virgil wants to look pretty for it.
He also doesn't want to examine just why it's so important for him to look pretty, or why 'he' sometimes feels a bit like an itchy wool blanket, not quite right. It wasn't like it always felt that way so it was fine, right? And it wasn't like he minded being called 'boyfriend' or anything, he liked it. It was just...a little weird, that was all. A little confusing.
Logan comes up as he finishes, kissing his cheek and making him blush.
"Are you ready?" Logan asks softly. Virgil nods. Logan zips up his hoodie for him, fingers gentle on the fabric, and it warms Virgil from the inside out. Logan gets the umbrella and Virgil unconsciously pouts. Logan raises an eyebrow.
"We are not risking illness or cold in the rain," Logan says, and Virgil grins impishly at him.
"But why not?" He asks. Logan just smiles fondly at him, intertwining his fingers with Virgil's and tugging him out the apartment door. He does not leave behind the umbrella.
The walk down to the library isn't that long, but it feels that way. Virgil is extra conscious of his skirt swishing around his tights-clad legs, and the eyeliner messily applied to both eyes. He's aware of the peach-flavored lip gloss and the way he almost stuck a star barrette in his hair, before chickening out last minute. He knows Logan wouldn't mind, but he's not sure how he feels.
"Cryptids?" Logan asks when they enter the library's double doors and Virgil nods eagerly, his attention immediately dragged away to an LGBTQ+ display in the middle of the floor. He doesn't want to approach it with Logan for fear Logan will ask why, but he finds his feet wandering that way anyway. The word 'non binary' catches his gaze and his hand reaches out before he can stop it, fingers closing around the book and plucking it free so he can read the description. Logan watches him, patient and only slightly confused. As Virgil reads the definition, something clicks into place in his chest.
"Hey, Logan?" He asks in a soft, wavering voice. "I think I might be this." Logan smiles softly at him, lifting their joined hands to kiss Virgil's knuckles.
"I wish you joy in the discovery of who you are," Logan says, his voice hushed. "Tell me if your pronouns change?" Virgil nods, slightly shaky.
"I will," he promises, his cheeks dusted with pink. Then-
"Now cryptids?"
"Of course," Logan says agreeably enough, and tugs Virgil away from the display. He brings the book with him.
