Work Text:

"Are you sure?" Virgil asks, smoothing their hands over the flouncy skirt of their dress hesitantly. They feel like 'they' today, as evidenced by the purple bracelet they're wearing. They've worked out a bracelet system, as Virgil is a little too anxious to wear a pronoun pin in public. Instead, blue means 'he' and purple means 'they.' If they end up needing any more pronoun sets, well, the bracelets came in a rainbow pack.

"Positive," Logan says, kissing their cheek. "You look beautiful, Virgil. You don't have to wear it, but I think you look gorgeous." Virgil blushes out to their ears.

"Okay," they say rapidly. "Okay, I will."

They're going out with Logan, Roman, and Patton, the latter two who have recently become in a relationship, if Virgil has their dates right. It's a little hard to tell with the two of them. They've had...some issues, but Virgil's glad they seem to have worked through them. It has certainly made the apartment calmer.

"So now are you going to tell me where we're going?" Virgil asks. Logan grins at them.

"No," he says smugly. "But you'll like it, I promise. It may get a bit loud, so be sure to bring your headphones." With that cryptic advice, Logan leaves them to finish getting ready. They look down at their sneakers, hesitate, then trade them for their only pair of heels, stuffing their headphones into their purple plaid backpack. Their hoodie goes into the backpack, too. They're trying to let the dress shine on its own, without a hoodie covering most of it. Logan is the one who picked it out online, and got it for Virgil as a surprise. They love it, especially the bounciness of the skirt. They're a sucker for anything that goes swish

Patton drives again, Logan guiding Virgil into the back seat. They click their seatbelt into place and look up, just in time to see Logan's hand settle in their hair, fingertips massaging their scalp and running through their hair.

"No fair," they protest weakly, already melting into their seat. Logan just smiles at them, scratching all the spots that feel the best.

"Yes fair," Logan says. "You can fall asleep if you like, Virgil, I'll wake you when we're there." Virgil opens their mouth to protest that they're fine, thank you, but a yawn punctuates it instead, and they flush, their eyes already slipping closed. The last thing they see is Logan's slightly smug expression.

"Virgil," Logan softly says in their ear an interminable amount of time later. "Virgil, it's time to wake up, love." Virgil stirs sleepily, surprised to realize it's already dark outside.

"How long was I asleep?" They ask in surprise. Logan kisses them.

"A while," he says. "But that's all right, you obviously needed it."

"Are you sure?" Virgil asks hesitantly. Logan nods firmly.

"Come on," he says. "Roman and Patton are finding the perfect spot."

"For what?" Virgil asks, curious. This time, Logan answers them, smiling as he tucks a strand of their hair behind their ear. Their hair is always falling in their eyes, but they can't bear to have it cut when it means their boyfriend plays with their hair so much.

"The fireworks," Logan says. "Did you bring your headphones?"

"Yep," Virgil says, fumbling around for their backpack and lifting it. "Just in case."

"Good," Logan praises, bringing a soft flush to Virgil's cheeks. "Shall we?"

They wander, hand in hand, toward Roman and Patton, who have set up an enormous picnic blanket on the side of a hill. Stars twinkle in the dark sky, diamonds scattered across crushed blue velvet. Patton waves enthusiastically when he sees them, and Virgil can see that he and Roman are holding hands, too.

Virgil carefully settles on the blanket, mindful of their dress, and Logan sits next to them, one arm slung across their shoulders and anchoring them gently in place, a comforting weight. Virgil sighs in contentment, snuggling against Logan's side.

"They should start right about...now," Logan says, lifting one hand. True to his word, purple bursts across the sky, and Virgil gasps softly in delight, their eyes shining. Indigo, baby blue, and red swiftly follow, along with green, yellow, and orange star bursts. Virgil ends up snagging their headphones a few minutes in, dulling the noise, but their eyes still sparkle in wonder at the multicolored showers of light. It's absolutely beautiful, and it feels even more magical on this empty stretch of hillside, like it's a private performance just for the four of them.

The last purple dazzles fade away and Virgil turns to Logan, kissing him sloppily yet enthusiastically.

"That was beautiful," they say. Logan gently plucks their headphones off their head, laying them to one side, and smiles at them.

"I'm glad you liked it," he says simply, punctuating his words with a kiss to Virgil's lips. Virgil smiles dreamily.

"Thank you," they say. "For a wonderful night." Logan squeezes them tightly to his side, covering their cheek with fairy-light kisses.

"You're welcome," Logan says, his voice soft. Virgil has never felt so loved.
