Shared Ski Slope Secrets

Summary:

Kaito's class goes on another ski trip this year too. But another school also booked the place and through unexpected circumstances, Kaito ends up with a roommate from the other school.

(Or: What if, instead of going to a very public busy area where Shinichi was constantly showing his face and wearing his school uniform, the Teitan High school trip had taken them to a ski resort?)

Shared Ski Slope Secrets

The School Trip Confession

Kaito was sulking as he made his way toward his room. Generally, he was very excited for this trip. Like last year, their class had decided to go on another ski trip together. His roommate was supposed to be Hakuba, but the blonde got called to London for an important case he'd been involved with that apparently had a break-through, so he canceled last minute, which only got Kaito even more excited.

Especially since Kaito had a heist coming up next week and having the room all to himself meant he could actually get a head-start on planning it already. It was another Suzuki heist, so he'd get to dazzle his Great Detective with his magic, which meant a lot of planning had to get into this.

Yet all that went out the window when they reached the resort and his teacher informed him that the other school that had booked the place had a last minute addition – a student they hadn't thought could make it originally – and since the place was booked solid, the teachers had talked to each other and figured that with one class having a student less and the other a student more, they could even out the rooming arrangement. Which meant that instead of Hakuba, Kaito now had a total stranger as his roommate. Hence the sulking.

"Hello," called Kaito out as he unlocked the room's door, in case his roommate was already there.

"Ah, hello. You must be my roommate from the other school. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Kaito froze in the doorway for only a split second before he quickly closed the door behind him. His sulking and casual demeanor changed. Tense and alert. The teen sitting on one of the beds had ridiculously neat hair aside from that one cute cowlick in the back and his eyes were more brilliant than any sapphire Kaito had ever laid eyes on; the two only jewels he really wanted to steal.

"Who are you?" asked Kaito in a sharp voice, eyes narrowed at the other.

"Huh. Rare that I have to introduce myself," the other offered a crooked grin. "Kudou Shinichi."

"No, you're not," Kaito approached slowly, hand in his bag. "Because that's impossible."

The casualness melted away from Shinichi as he frowned up at the stranger. He didn't know who the other was, but for some reason he seemed to know that Kudou Shinichi shouldn't be able to be here right now. There was such a finite note to his voice, he knew. How, Shinichi couldn't fathom, but he did. So Shinichi needed a different cover then, which might be as well.

"Okay, okay, you got me," Shinichi threw his hands up and offered his best KID-grin – one he had seen often enough to be able to copy. "I'm Kaitou KID. I've frequently been posing as Kudou."

The suspicious look on the stranger's face changed into something akin to offended and the next second, Shinichi was staring down the barrel of the card-gun. "No, you're not."

Shinichi lost all composure as he stared directly at the weapon he knew so well. Had fired before. This wasn't a toy. This was the real card-gun. Slowly, Shinichi let his eyes wander up the arm and for the first time, he really looked at the other's face. Similar enough to Shinichi's that he thought the other could pull off disguising as Shinichi without props. But his eyes were darker, with a violet tint to them that was so enchanting, Shinichi had gotten lost in them countless times before. His hair was darker than Shinichi's, not much but some, and it was ridiculously messy and looked so fluffy, Shinichi had the urge to run his fingers through and feel for himself. And then Shinichi laughed.

"...W... What kind of reaction is that?" KID sounded irritated. "Who. Are. You?"

"I can't believe this," Shinichi doubled over in laughter. "This must be Fate's version of a joke, right? You. Me. Sharing a room. Oi, oi, oi, lower your gun, fool. Who would be scared of a toy?"

He wiped the tears from the corner of his eyes. For a second, doubt flickered in KID's eyes as he recognized the words Shinichi had spoken to him the first time KID had playfully threatened him with the card-gun. Then, his resolve strengthened and grip on his gun tightened.

"No," KID's voice was hard. "I don't know who you are, but I assume you're one of the people responsible for Kudou's death, trying to pretend and lure him out in case he's still alive. He's dead."

Shinichi bit his lip hard to keep from smiling softly as his heart started racing. KID really took protecting Shinichi's secret seriously. Damn that thief, why was it so easy to fall in love with him?

"I'm me, KID," Shinichi's voice got softer. "I just spend most my time as Edogawa Conan nowadays. You know, the kid you kidnapped to Singapore to save your sorry ass."

KID blinked repeatedly at him, eyes widening. An imposter could not possibly know that, because even Conan's involvement in that case was only knowledge to the two of them. Slowly did the thief lower his gun, but he still looked confused. With a sigh did Shinichi get up.

"The scientist who made the drug that shrank me in the first place hasn't succeeded in finishing the antidote yet, but... a temporary one that allows me to be Shinichi at least for a few hours."

"Damn, that little nee-chan is scary," whispered KID. "But... Why? I mean, why now?"

Shinichi flushed, a little embarrassed actually. "I... I missed so much of my life already and I'm so tired of missing out. And for the last two weeks, Ran, Sonoko and Sera have been talking about this trip so much, making plans, being excited for it. Ran kept texting me, asking me if I'd come too... telling me that she hoped I'd come so she could... introduce me to her girlfriend... And I just... I want just a little bit of my life, for just... this weekend. Be Shinichi, hang out with my friends, do normal things, get to meet Ran's girlfriend who I already know pretty well, but nobody can know."

Shinichi averted his eyes, turning to look out the window instead of at the thief. "I know it's stupid. I know I should be hiding. I know I'm putting myself through unnecessary pain with the antidotes. But I need this. I'm... I feel like I'm losing Shinichi. Like I'm forgetting... who I am."

"I think... I get that," whispered KID. "Sometimes, it's hard to keep me and KID apart too. Which, mh. I think introductions are in order, Great Detective. Kuroba Kaito, it's a pleasure to meet you."

KID bowed and kissed Shinichi's hand. For a moment, Shinichi's brain froze. But no, this didn't mean anything, this was just KID being KID. Always charming and flirty. So Shinichi forced himself to calm down and to roll his eyes pointedly at the thief.

"I guess you're right though," Shinichi grinned. "Kudou Shinichi, detective."

"Great Detective," corrected Kaito with a cheeky but bright grin before pulling Shinichi into a surprise hug. "Oh, I'm so happy to finally meet the full-sized you!"

Shinichi blushed furiously, glad said blush was hidden from the thief right now. KID was warm and smelt good, but he knew both of those facts, he'd been carried around by KID enough to know it.

"If you do anything illegal during this trip, I will arrest you," warned Shinichi.

"You're no fun at all, Great Detective," KID pouted at him cutely.

"At least now I won't have to worry about hiding at night," Shinichi sighed relieved.

"What does that even mean?" KID – Kuroba – sat down on the other bed, looking at him.

"The... temporary antidote," Shinichi avoided looking at the thief. "I have to wait eight hours between taking the next one, so I'll be Conan at night, which would have been a problem with any other roommate. I had hoped my late sign-up might lead to me not having a roommate."

"So... Nobody here knows about Conan and we'll have to hide you at night," summed KID up.

"Well. And at day," Shinichi turned back to look at Kuroba. "Because as you said, Kudou Shinichi is dead. Honestly, the main reason why I managed to convince Haibara to give me the antidote was the fact that we're going skiing. A hat covering my... distinct hairstyle... goggles while skiing, otherwise a scarf that I can pull over my mouth and nose, hide the lower half of my face, the thick winter-clothes make it hard to make out distinct body-shapes. If we'd gone... literally anywhere else... there is no way she would have agreed. Imagine, walking around in my school uniform, with my classmates all day, expecting not to be found out. It'd be far too much of a risk."

"Yeah, that'd be ridiculous," Kaito chuckled softly. "Okay. I got your back, Great Detective. I'll watch out for shady or suspicious people. See it as repaying the Singapore favor."

Shinichi huffed, though he felt warm and his heart was racing. Even more so when he realized he'd be spending the next three days in the same room as Kaitou KID. Shinichi's cheeks darkened.

"Shinichi! Shinichi, come on, we want to go to the slope!" Ran called out, waving at him.

She was holding hands with Sera, a bright and happy smile on her lips. It had stopped hurting weeks ago. At first, looking at Ran and Sera had hurt, because Ran had moved on. Ran was happy and she didn't need him for that. But the more time passed, the more he came to appreciate that Ran was happy, that the sadness that had clouded her ever since Shinichi left got lifted, at least partially. He'd never seen her this happy before.

The more he accepted that Ran had moved on, the more he had come to accept his own feelings that had been steadily growing for months now. He was in love with Kaitou KID and maybe he had been hiding behind the safety of his feelings for Ran, because Ran was Ran, his childhood best friend, the person who knew him better than anyone. Or rather, the person who had known him better than anyone, when he had still been just Shinichi. He wasn't that person anymore and if he was being honest, Ran didn't... know him anymore. There was someone else, someone who knew all sides of him, who understood him like nobody else. Who'd threaten a potential member of the Black Organization with his card-gun to protect Shinichi's secret.

"Hey, detective geek, who is your doppelgänger?" asked Sonoko with a suspicious glare.

At which point Shinichi noticed that Kaito was still right there, next to him. Very closely next to him, at that. A carefree grin was on his face as he waved at his biggest fan in greeting.

"Yo. I'm Kuroba Kaito, this one's roommate," offered KID happily. "Nice to meet you."

"Bakaito! What are you doing? Are you bothering other people again?"

Shinichi frowned confused and him and the girls turned to see a messy-haired brunette girl running toward them, followed by a bespectacled girl and an intimidating redhead.

"I'm not bothering anyone. I was introducing myself, Ahoko," Kaito huffed offended. "This is my roommate, Kudou Shinichi, and his friends I was just about to meet. You're so rude."

"Kuroba-kun," interrupted Shinichi, wondrous at the way KID's real name felt on his tongue. "These are my friends, Mouri Ran, Sera Masumi and Suzuki Sonoko."

"It's so nice to meet you all," KID grinned at the girls. "These are my friends, though the term is used loosely in some cases, Nakamori Aoko, Momoi Keiko and Koizumi Akako."

"We were just heading out, do you want to come?" suggested Ran as she shook hands with Aoko.

"Oh, yes! We wanted to go on the slope too," Aoko smiled brightly. "Let's go together!"

The girls led the way, though Akako fell back with the boys, giving Shinichi a disturbing, long glance that made him shudder in an uncomfortable manner. She smiled, a foreboding look.

"You really do have a death wish, Kuroba-kun," commented Akako before laughing and leaving.

"She's kind of..." whispered Shinichi, his eyes wide as he watched her catch up with Sonoko.

"Yeah, she is," agreed Kaito before casually wrapping an arm around Shinichi's shoulders. "Ah, I get to spend a whole weekend with the Great Detective! I can't wait to see you ski!"

"At least start calling me Kudou-kun," pushed Shinichi annoyed.

"Mh... No," Kaito tilted his head, a mischievous grin on his lips." Come along, Shin-chan."

The day had been so much fun. Kaito had hit it off right away with Sonoko, of course he had, she was his number one fan, it was easy to bring up Kaitou KID and with that, it was the two of them gushing while Aoko complained and Shinichi half-heartedly complained. Sonoko and Akako had also hit it off, though that one terrified him. And it was really nice to see Shinichi bonding with Sera about detective nonsense (of course was there a murder when the group headed to a restaurant for lunch). Kaito had seen Conan bond with Sera, had seen the two of them work together and he was glad for Shinichi that he got to leave a good impression on Ran's girlfriend now. Both Keiko and Ran let the louder personalities in the group dominate the conversations while talking softly among themselves, with Aoko and Shinichi occasionally chiming in.

And Shinichi! Shinichi! Kaito loved bantering with Conan after a heist, but getting to casually sit down with Shinichi and just... have actual conversations? The closest he'd gotten to that was Singapore, where they had spent days together, solving a case together. But this was an entirely different vibe. Talking over lunch, having Shinichi tell him and the others about his life.

Kaito was practically glowing as he got out of the shower, having warmed up after spending the day outside in the snow. The thought of his cute snow bunny Shinichi made his heart thump hard in his rib-cage. He'd been so cute, with the snow in his hair, bundled up in the dark-blue parker with the fur rim. To complete the image, Kaito had summoned a pair of bunny ears, causing the detective to stare surprised and then glare. After that, the door was open for Kaito to perform his magic. And having the Great Detective's undivided attention like that, it was absolutely everything!

"Ne, Shin-chan, do you want to shower too-" Kaito trailed off, losing his bright smile.

Shinichi sat against his bed, hunched over, clutching his chest. In a second, Kaito was right next to his detective, carefully reaching for him. Shinichi groaned in pain, trying to fold himself even smaller and Kaito pulled him into a hug. This couldn't be right, could it? Shinichi had said the turning was painful, but this looked excruciating! Shushing his detective gently, he held him close, trying to caress his back soothingly. The weight on his lap reduced more and more and the pained gasps subsided until they stopped and the detective was left panting for breath.

"What do you need, tantei-kun?" asked Kaito softly. "Pain meds? Water?"

"Sounds both good," muttered Conan, forehead resting against Kaito's chest. "Gimme a sec."

"As long as you need," promised Kaito, still holding his detective close.

They stayed like that for minutes, probably half an hour or so, Kaito couldn't tell, he just enjoyed holding his detective and he just wanted Shinichi to feel better. After a while, a small hand grabbed Kaito's arm, indicating that he wanted to get up, so Kaito helped him onto the bed. Quickly did he run off to the bathroom to get a glass of water and the pain meds.

"Here you go," Kaito kept his voice soft and soothing. "Anything else?"

Large, blue eyes looked at him reluctantly, as though the detective wanted to ask for something but wasn't unsure if he should. How peculiar. Kudou Shinichi was many things but certainly not someone who held back. So Kaito stayed standing there, watching. Waiting.

"Can you..." Shinichi glared defiantly and looked away from him. "...Hold me a little longer...? I'm cold and you're running warm. That's... soothing. Helpful. It's okay, you don't have-"

Before Shinichi could finish the sentence, Kaito was right next to him in the bed, pulling him close. "It's okay, tantei-kun. I got you. Rest. Sleep, okay? I'm right here."

It didn't take the small detective long to drift off in Kaito's arms, deep asleep within moments.

"I'm glad I finally got to meet the famous Kudou Shinichi," Sera grinned broadly.

"Likewise, Sera-san," Shinichi smiled politely, watching the way Sera and Ran held hands.

They were so casual with each other. Effortless. No awkwardness. They simply moved in each other's space, had no qualms or embarrassment about touching each other. Shinichi blinked when a piece of pie was suddenly right in front of his face. He turned toward the thief next to him, who sat so close, turned toward Shinichi with a bright smile on his face, one hand on Shinichi's thigh.

"Here, here! I saw they had lemon pie, so I got you some! Say aah," prompted Kaito.

For a moment, Shinichi rolled his eyes fondly, before doing as he was told. He hummed appreciatively as he chewed the pie, eyes now longingly on Kaito's plate. Kaito cackled as he pushed the plate toward Shinichi, causing the detective's face to brighten.

"I don't like lemon pie. I got myself the double chocolate cake with whipped cream."

"Disgusting," commented Shinichi dryly, side-eyeing the second plate Kaito had brought.

"That is why this is mine, you tasteless detective," Kaito stuck his tongue out at him.

There was a strange silence around them as the girls stared at them and Aoko spoke up. "Ah. You two must have... bonded a lot yesterday? You seem to be getting along very well!"

Ah. Right. Shinichi wasn't supposed to know Kaito. Shinichi wasn't the type to... let a total stranger hand-feed him. Acutely aware of the situation, Shinichi flushed brightly, staring at Kaito's hand still on his thigh.

"K... Kuroba-kun and I have known each other for a couple months," admitted Shinichi, causing Kaito to stare at him wide-eyed. "We ran into each other, when I had a case in Ekoda. We've been in contact since then, but seeing him here yesterday was... a surprise."

Ran narrowed her eyes at him, looking more like a detective, before she smiled knowingly. "Ah."

What did that even mean? Frowning confused, Shinichi turned toward Kaito, who shrugged.

"Oh my god, they even talk without words," Sonoko snorted. "So that is why you graciously told Ran to give up on waiting on you! You got yourself a boyfriend! I approve of him, he has taste and isn't a boring detective geek, but how dare you not tell us sooner!"

"B... Boy... Boyfriend," Shinichi's eyes widened and his cheeks flushed.

"Oh, is that why you have been dodging me so often in recent months, Bakaito? Because you were secretly having a boyfriend?" Aoko gasped and started hitting Kaito's shoulder.

"Yes, yes, yes," Kaito yelped and ducked behind Shinichi. "I was secretly meeting Shin-chan, we had date-nights! It was none of your business, stop hitting me, you brute!"

"D... Date-nights," hissed Shinichi and narrowed his eyes at Kaito.

"What else would you call our rooftop rendezvous?" whispered Kaito teasingly into his ear.

Shinichi blushed bright red like a tomato, covering his face. "Bastard."

"You two are really cute together," commented Keiko with a kind smile. "I'm happy for you."

Shinichi had never wished more for a murder so he could run off and hide. Instead, he had to sit through this lunch and wait until it were just Kaito and Shinichi before he could kick the thief.

"Ouch," Kaito whined. "Domestic abuse! Don't be cruel to your boyfriend, Shin-chan."

"What are you doing sprouting lies to our friends to?!" Shinichi glared at Kaito while blushing.

"Why? I've been looking for a way for Kuroba Kaito and Kudou Shinichi to meet for so long now! And how to explain to others why our relationship would be moving so fast after meeting!"

"Fast. Relarionahip. What are you talking about, stupid thief?" asked Shinichi startled.

Kaito grinned impishly at him, hands behind his head. "Tantei-kun. I'm very patiently waiting for you to get your body back. I didn't want to do this before then because it would feel like... I don't know, dangling something in front of you that you can't have yet? But for both of us. But I love you, Great Detective, and I'm determined to steal your heart. I have this whole plan! Meeting you in person once you'd return, getting to know you, befriend you, make you fall in love with me and then I could tell you that I'm actually Kaitou KID and we could be in a relationship, with all our history."

"Slow down, sneak thief," Shinichi rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Did you just say you love me?"

"I did," confirmed Kaito, still grinning but now looking incredibly nervous. "And I am determined to steal your heart, Great Detective. Consider this your notice."

"Idiot," muttered Shinichi, covering his face with his hands.

"That's... unnecessarily harsh, tantei-kun," Kaito pouted and deflated.

"I-di-ot," repeated Shinichi more pointedly as he looked up at the thief. "You can't steal something that was already given to you willingly, you're a thief you should know that."

Kaito blinked repeatedly, looking startled. And then he smiled, so brightly it was blinding.

"Ah! That is just a sign of how good I am as a thief! I stole something without even noticing."

"Cheesy," muttered Shinichi, shoving Kaito's chest. "Your ego is too big for this room."

Kaito laughed softly as he stepped even closer to Shinichi. "Ne, ne. If I already have your heart, do you think I can... have a kiss then? I feel like we should use this opportuni-"

He didn't even get to finish his sentence, because Shinichi grabbed him by the shirt and hauled him in to kiss him. It was demanding and greedy and Shinichi loved the way Kaito's lips felt against his. Until their kiss was interrupted. Shinichi moaned, clinging onto Kaito's chest.

"Damn, am I such a good kisser, tantei-kun?" teased Kaito.

Another moan, but this time the pain could be heard clearly. Shinichi grasped his own chest with his free hand, slowly sinking onto the ground. Kaito went down with him, pulling him close.

"I had more... more time... yesterday," whispered Shinichi mournfully.

"Sh, it's okay, Shinichi," whispered Kaito in a gentle voice. "I got you."

"I... I know you do, my sneak thief," Shinichi smiled pained up at him.

Kaito's heart jumped into his throat at that. He liked that. He'd never considered that before. Yes, Kaito thought of the Great Detective as his Great Detective, but that Shinichi also thought of him as his sneak thief...? The thought made him smile broadly as he held Shinichi close.

/break\

"But you know that after this weekend, I'll be back to Conan permanently, right?"

Shinichi, still in Conan's body, turned his head to look at Kaito. He'd just woken up, snuggled against his thief, with Kaito's arm around him, hugging him like a teddy bear. Kaito blinked sleepily at him, hugging him some closer. Being in the thief's arms felt so safe and warm.

"Not permanently," argued Kaito as he kissed the top of Conan's head. "I have faith in your scary little nee-chan. She's going to figure out the solution. Even if it'll take a little time... I can wait. I've been waiting for you for months, Shinichi, I can wait longer. You are worth the wait."

"I am, huh?" Shinichi flushed as he looked at Kaito.

"Mh," Kaito grinned pleased. "You absolutely are. Besides, just because we can't be... physical with each other... I mean, I love what we have so far, Great Detective and Phantom Thief."

"Okay, good," Shinichi heaved a relieved sigh, gently pecking Kaito's cheek. "Let's enjoy the last day of this trip. And maybe after, I could... find my way to Ekoda on occasion."

"Well, now that I'm bffs with Sonoko-chan, I will definitely find my way to yours too."

Shinichi chuckled fondly at that thought. "You two will be insufferable."

Notes:

This feels like it's the longest Magic Monday so far. This was also brought to you by how utterly DUMB the concept of the 1000th chapter was when I read it I mean seriously he went out there with his real face in his school uniform into a ton of very public places AND solved a murder that attracted attention aND THEN went Pikachu-faced when his picture got leaked I'm sorry this was just all so so so stupid and forced for the sake of featuring Shinichi in the 1000th chapter and not for the sake of ANYONE in universe using their brains despite all of them being certified geniuses. SO. Here's my pitch for how Shinichi could have attended the class trip while hiding his identity AND feature Kaito (becuase I DID get salty that Kaito wasn't in the 1000th either...)! ;D
