The Magician and the Soccer Star

How Fate Brought Them Together Again

It had been years since Kaitou KID had last faced off against the Great Detective.

Kaito was all grown up and a lot had happened since his high school days. During his senior year, he had found and destroyed Pandora. That didn't mean his time as Kaitou KID was over though; he saw KID as more than just a means to avenge his father by now, had done so for a while. The thrill of the chase, the joy of showing off his magic on this impossibly big stage, the good he did. Every time he stole a stolen gem from a greedy rich person to return it to its rightful owner, he felt like he could make the world better. That wasn't a feeling he was ready to give up.

But he took a break. He had to. He needed to focus on school for his graduation and then he wanted to build up a career for himself. Magic shows on real stages, while not being chased by the police. Making a name for himself, not just his father's legacy. For that, he needed time and concentration.

The sad thing was that not long before Kaito found Pandora, Edogawa Conan left. He had said goodbye to KID during the last heist before the boy left. And he promised to return. However, by the time Kudou Shinichi returned, KID had already retired (temporarily).

Kaito pouted about that for a while, every time Shinichi's name popped up in the newspapers. He wished he could go see him, but it'd be... risky and ridiculous to go seek Shinichi as KID, now that he was retired. What was he supposed to say? Hey, Great Detective, I am madly in love with you and have been waiting for you to get your body back so I could ask you out? Not very convincing. Would probably earn him at least one soccer-ball to the stomach.

So instead, Kaito kept tabs on Shinichi through newspapers and interviews, while he graduated high school and started college. Every time he saw Shinichi smile, Kaito fell more in love with him. Kaito had been so determined, looking forward to that very first heist once he'd have time for it again. First time he would get to challenge Shinichi again.

By the time Kaito gave notice for his first heist, Shinichi wasn't available. He'd been scouted. Training camp was something he couldn't just ditch to attend a heist. Not now, not while he was living his own dream. Somehow, Kaito had always pictured Shinichi to become a police officer, one day an inspector, or open his own detective agency. Much to his, and most other people's, surprise, Shinichi took a different route with his professional career.

He still solved cases, because murders still seemed to be happening all around him. And just as he had done as a high school student and as Conan, he solved the cases when they happened. The same as always. Only that now, he went on to play soccer and became a shining athletic star.

Kaito admired him, he loved the look on Shinichi's face when he scored a goal, it might be even brighter than his 'I solved the case' smirk. Perhaps because this time, no one had to die for it.

Sadly, that passion and profession kept them apart. Even more so after Kaito's own career took off. Magic Kaito became a rising star of his own. He started going on tour and once he was more established, had more routine to the job, he started going on heists in other countries too. Not everytime that he went to other countries and usually he tried not to have them in the same city he was in, sometimes even going to the neighboring country, because otherwise he would be too easily linked to KID. That would spoil the fun, after all.

"Kudou! Kudou are you coming? The guys are waiting for us, come on."

Kaito stumbled just a little bit. Surely that was a coincident, right? But then Kudou was not the most common Canadian surname, was it? He turned toward the voice and saw a young man standing close by, looking bored. Another man was jogging up to him, smiling. Right past Kaito. Kaito stood frozen, staring in awe at Kudou Shinichi. He looked good. Sharper, all grown up. What was Shinichi doing in Canada though? Shinichi and the other man left before Kaito had the chance to do anything. So instead, he got out his phone and googled quickly. And oh.

It was the Soccer World Cup and Canada was one of the three countries hosting this year. There was a game coming up, right here, and Shinichi was on the... on the national team. Of course he was. Kaito knew that. He had just lost track of the World Cup, he'd been so preoccupied with planning this tour, the tricks for it, then traveling... He hadn't kept up with this.

Shinichi and Kaito were in the same city. And though Kaito had no plans for a heist, he felt tempted to go and see Shinichi work his magic. It had also been a while since Kaito last got to see one of Shinichi's games live, because of their contradicting schedules. If he had a chance, he always went to watch, because it was amazing to see Shinichi move and score.

/break\

Shinichi was amazing, as always. And he looked oh-so fine in that national team uniform. Soccer was a beautiful sport, with those shorts and the tight shirts. Simply beautiful. And, of course, Shinichi had scored the winning goal. And then three more goals after that. They really left the other team on the floor, Kaito nearly felt bad for them. Only nearly because he enjoyed the way Shinichi smiled and celebrated with his team-mates after.

There had been a certain sense of temptation to go and see him after. But it had been five years now, hadn't it? Shinichi probably hadn't thought about Kaitou KID in years. It'd be weird and stalkery to show up as Kaito now. He'd waited too long. Yet still, he couldn't leave just like that. He dropped a bouquet of pure-white roses off anonymously, even resisting the urge to leave a KID card with it.

All of that was on his mind while he performed his own magic show. Despite his distraction, he thought he outdid himself. Perhaps because of his distraction, because it felt like his tantei-kun was there. In his mind, he felt like he was a teenager again, during a heist, being chased by that relentless detective. Just seeing Shinichi so briefly, it had motivated him so much.

"You were amazing, Mister Kuroba," stated his assistant as she entered his changing room.

"Thank you, Emily," Kaito smiled at her. "I can't wait to get out though. I still have plans."

The joy of tonight had given Kaito the final push. He couldn't let Shinichi slip away. Meeting him here again, this wasn't a coincident. It was fate. He would be a fool to let this pass. No, he had looked up what hotel the national team was staying at, he was going to bump into Shinichi and then, well, he didn't have a concrete plan but once they would talk, once he'd look into those brilliant, blue eyes, he was sure he would come up with something. Anything to bring Shinichi back into his life, this time more permanently. He'd never fallen out of love with Shinichi and just seeing him again had overwhelmed Kaito will all of the feelings he had kept a secret for so long.

"Ah, but... You have a visitor? Since you usually accept short visits from big fans, so..."

"Not tonight. I have plans," Kaito smiled at her. "Tell them I'm sorry."

"That's quite the shame, Kuroba-san. I had hoped we could talk. But if you're busy... I hope you'll at least accept the flowers," the voice came from behind Emily.

She stepped aside and... Kaito's eyes widened. In stepped Shinichi, a charming smile on his lips and a bouquet of white roses in his arms. He cleaned up nice, wearing a dark-blue suit. Kaito swallowed hard, unsure what to do with this. This up close, not in motion, Kaito got to drink in the sight.

"It's okay, Emily. I think my schedule just cleared up. If you'll excuse us?"

With a curious frown did she nod and step outside, while Shinichi stepped in. Now that they were closer, Kaito saw something nervous but also excited in Shinichi's eyes. Getting up, Kaito walked over to Shinichi to stand right in front of him and accept the roses.

"Getting flowers from a celebrity, I feel so flattered," Kaito grinned, taking the roses over to his desk. "You're the striker on the national team, number 13. Kudou Shinichi. What an honor."

"I... thought it would only be fair to return the favor. Though not the flowers. I bought you your own bouquet... KID-san," offered Shinichi, his voice soft but excited.

Kaito tensed, his eyes widening. When he turned around again, there was that smirk, that gorgeous detective-smirk. The one Kaito wanted to kiss off Shinichi's face until the soccer player was breathless. Casually, Kaito leaned against his desk and crossed his arms.

"Now, whatever gave you that impression," Kaito feigned innocence.

"I've had a suspicion for... quite a while now. You're good; you don't set up your heists on the day of your shows or in the same city. But I've seen segments on TV about you, about Magic Kaito, and... your magic... your hands. I had a suspicion, so I kept track of your tours and of KID's heists and they're close enough that you can make it. But the final nail in the coffin was today."

"Why? Was there a KID heist?" Kaito raised his eyebrows in fake surprise.

"No," Shinichi huffed, crossing his arms. "The roses. Soccer players don't often get flowers. Much less roses. And those... white roses. They reminded me of you. Of KID. When I asked who had left them, I was told the man looked a lot like me. And we do, don't we? I've known that for years."

Smiling a little, Kaito turned to look at the roses, running his fingers along the petals of one of them. "I see that the national team hasn't dampened your detective skills, Great Detective."

Shinichi shuddered at that, perking up, barely noticeable. "I... Why. Why now, I mean."

"If it'd gone according to my wishes, I would have gotten to face off with you under the moonlight after graduation. But then you were off becoming a big shot. And then I was... off becoming a big shot. Our schedule never aligned," Kaito smiled sadly. "When I saw you this morning, I... thought that was fate. I couldn't resist going to your game, but... I couldn't go to give you the flowers personally. I thought it'd give me away. Guess they did even so, mh?"

"Guess so," Shinichi slowly stepped up to him.

"I also didn't know if..." Kaito licked his lips. "It's been years. You always claimed that thieves aren't your jurisdiction anyway. I thought perhaps you had forgotten all about that thief."

"You're pretty unforgettable, KID-san," whispered Shinichi, his cheeks aflame.

He looked so nervous. That was a rare look on him. Though Kaito felt the same nerves.

"Yeah, I am?" Kaito offered a crooked grin as they stood so very close.

"I wanted to..." Shinichi paused, brows furrowed. "I wanted to go to your heist, when you returned. But I couldn't. I thought, oh well, there'll be another chance. But it... didn't work out mh?"

"Well, even if it didn't... I..." Kaito straightened up. "I want you in my life, Shinichi."

"Good," whispered Shinichi relieved, smiling a little. "Because I'd like to get to know Kaito."

"I think we can arrange that," Kaito grinned as he wrapped his arms around the soccer player.

He pulled Shinichi closer, until they were finally kissing – and all those years felt worth it.

~*~ The End ~*~

Notes:

It's always "Shinichi becomes a cop/private detective as an adult" but then I rewatched "The Eleventh Striker" and just, the JOY he experiences when he actually gets to play soccer? And the cases will follow him anyway, whether he becomes a professional detective or not, so why not balance the darkness of all the murders out with something he is also very passionate about! ALSO FUCK THE "KAITO QUITS BEING KID" TROPE I WANT KAITO TO CONTINUE MAKING JEWEL-LIBERATING HEISTS AND ENJOY THE FUN EVEN AFTER PANDORA! ^-^
