Sometimes Lying Leads To Happiness

Summary:

In which Wei Wuxian is obviously far too busy getting himself a husband to have anything to do with this drama about a prison break. Life changes accordingly.

Work Text:

It starts like this:

During the war Lan Wangji almost dies during an ambush by the Wen Sect. It puts some things into perspective in a way. By chance he sees Wei Wuxian soon after and, fuelled by impulsivity and left over adrenaline, asks to court him.

That is about the most unexpected thing he could have said from Wei Wuxian’s point of view and he can’t think of what to say right then. Lan Wangji takes that well, mostly. He did expect rejection after all, though it hurt to experience it. Except that about three days of freaking out later Wei Wuxian comes back saying that he would be amenable to being courted actually and so their relationship begins.

They find happiness in each other during the war where everything is bleak and in the post war as well, where a lot of hopeful plans are made.

And then an attack happens at the Qiongqi detention camp.

The very best conference Nie Huaisang ever attended:

The meeting started predictable as he'd expected it would be. Jin Guangshan wanted Wei-xiong’s blood for apparently stealing his Wen prisoners and running off to who knew where, with the sole witness to this being his nephew Jin Zixun.

Jiang Wanyin then proceeded to throw Wei-xiong to the wolves which was also a given, considering the two of them had been fighting lately. Something about how it was an insult to the Jiang Sect that Wei-xiong was leaving to marry Wangji-xiong who was apparently somehow responsible for the fall or Lotus Pier.

Er-ge was visibly nervous about the whole thing, probably praying no one else noticed that Wangji-xiong had been missing for about the same time as Wei-xiong.

And Da-ge was mad about the Wens escaping no matter who had been the one to do it.

Boring really.

And then Wei-xiong and Wangji-xiong arrived.

In seconds, all of the guards had their swords pointed at them and soon after Bichen was unsheathed, bringing them to a standstill. Wei-xiong looked calm as ever from behind his partner, waving at Er-ge. “What's this about, Lan-gege?”

Er-ge, the peacemaker that he was, got up and moved to join them. “Wangji, Wuxian,” he greeted them with a smile despite how tense everyone was, and proceeded to explain to them the accusations they were dealing with this evening, mainly that Wei-xiong was a big scary demonic cultivator and had stolen the Wen Remnants to start a sect and spread his evilness all around. Somehow he managed to make it sound reasonable enough that it wouldn't cause them too much offense.

“Ah you see that isn't possible,” Wei-xiong started, and by his smile alone Nie Huaisang already knew this would be good. “I've been too busy to do any of that this month. That's actually what we came here to tell you about!“

“Don't bother lying idiot! What sort of excuse could you even give now?” Jiang Wanyin barked.

Wangji-xiong’s glare could have killed.

Ignoring all of them, Wei-xiong continued, “We eloped!”

All chatter in the room stopped.

Er-ge blinked, disbelief clear in his face and then looked at his brother for confirmation.

“It is true.”

Nie Huaisang marvelled at them.

“So you see I've been too busy on my honeymoon to commit any crimes. Lan Zhan can vouch for me!” Right as Wangji-xiong nodded his confirmation, Wei-xiong moved his collar down a bit, showing a good number of love bites as though saying he'd been on his honeymoon wasn't enough for them to understand what he was implying. Several people choked.

“Can his opinion truly be considered?” Jim Guangshan argued. “It's clear the boy is being manipulated to lie by Wei Wuxian. He showed his true character when he attempted to murder Zixun.”

“Who?”

It was hard not to laugh at the honest confusion in Wei-xiong’s voice. Especially because Nie Huaisang was quite sure Jin Zixun was telling the truth.

The show that proceeded made keeping his expression in check even harder, and he had to resort to covering his face with his fan multiple times, though by the looks Da-ge was giving him, he clearly knew what was going on. What was he to do besides laugh when, apparently tired of dancing around all the political talk, Wangji-xiong confirmed Wei-xiong’s earlier implications and said he could yes confirm where Wei Wuxian was during this whole month because apparently they fuck every day .

Wei-xiong hasn't stopped laughing since.

At this point, the sect leaders were too embarrassed to question them further - especially poor Er-ge - so they were both let go and the meeting ended soon after.

Nie Huaisang was glad, he would have hated to miss the opportunity to congratulate them.

The aforementioned marriage:

Wei Wuxian watched fondly as Lan Zhan carefully took A-Yuan and A-Song out of Wen-popo’s hands.

The two babies were the only orphans out of the ten children that had been at the prison camp. They almost lost most of them, if it wasn't for Lan Zhan's ability to keep his speed while traveling with both him and Qing-jie, and for Wen Qing’s medical expertise, they might only have had A-Yuan with them.

The siblings only had their grandmother now, but Wei Wuxian suspected that if his Lan Zhan had any say in it that wouldn't be the case for long.

Smiling, he called after them.

“You're not allowed to get children outside of marriage, Hanguang-jun, imagine the scandal!”

Thus they marry that very same night.

Of the state of the Wen Remnants and accidental little brother acquisition:

When she asked Wei Wuxian for help, she hadn't quite anticipated the degree in which he would stay a part of their lives.

Him and his HanGuang-Jun had initially assisted their escape to safety from the camp to Yiling, the Burial Mounds to be precise. They then left after a month after that, married and on their way to adopting two children of her clan and came back a week later with supplies and news of their apparent safety as not only no one knew where they were, they no longer would look to Wei Wuxian or Lan Wangji for answers.

From then on it was easy to decide that the Burial Mounds weren't a stable place for them to stay, and with the cover of night hunts (and their extended honeymoon) the two could search for somewhere better for them to settle permanently.

It was so much more than she ever expected.

By the end of the year they were all moved to a small town far away from the eyes of the cultivation world, living safely under a new name, and Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had probably spent more time with them than at Cloud Recesses where they officially lived.

She was sure they were up to something actually, but if they wanted to cause trouble for the Lans it was none of her business.

Before she realized, Wei Wuxian started following her around in the same way A-Ning did, looking at her for advice and leadership as much or perhaps more than everyone else in their small settlement. She was confident that he didn’t need to. No, Wei Wuxian could fend for himself just fine, she suspected what he delighted in was going through the motions of being a needy little brother. And without her permission, he wormed his way into her heart.

Watching him drag A-Ning around, followed by his husband and children, she couldn’t help but feel happy that their little family grew.

On Lan Yuan and Lan Song, miracle children:

A year into their so called extended honeymoon, Wangji and Wuxian came to Cloud Recesses carrying two children.

“Look Da-ge you’re an uncle now!” Wuxian announced cheerfully.

Lan Xichen’s smile froze.

“These are Lan Yuan and Lan Song,” Wangji introduced.

Perhaps he shouldn’t have be so surprised, Lan Xichen thought to himself, from the moment Wangji and Wuxian informed him that they planned to come live in Cloud Recesses more permanently he’d been expecting them to do something shocking, for all that he had forgotten it in amidst his excitement at the prospect.

By the time he had processed the scene in front of him, Lan Xichen was already being introduced to the children as their Jiujiu, though they were so small that he doubted they understood any of it.

Shufu would suffer at the implications of Lan Xichen being called that, but personally, he was happy Wangji learned how to have some fun with these things. Wei Wuxian was a terrible good influence on his little brother and he approved it wholeheartedly.

“They’re the cutest, aren’t they?”

“That they are,” he agreed, still a bit dazed to be holding his nephew for the first time.

A niece and a nephew! He hadn’t expected to be an uncle so soon.

“Forgive me for asking, but where have the two come from?”

The question was an absent minded one. He trusted the two of them, but as sect leader he had to at least ask.

“I birthed them of course! Don’t you see how our little A-Yuan has Lan Zhan’s nose and my smile? I’m told A-Song looks more like me, but she’s all quiet like our Zhanzhan.”

Good thing that being a sect leader also gave him the ability to not react outwardly no matter how shocked he was, because at this point, Lan Xichen wasn’t sure they were joking.

Oh, Shufu will definitely have a lot to say about this’ Lan Xichen thought, then shrugged, choosing to focus on enjoying his time with his brother and his family.

The perpetual exhaustion of Lan Qiren:

There had been many moments the past few years Lan Qiren almost Qi deviated from the cognitive dissonance between the love he felt for his grand niece and nephew and the outrage at the implication their birth may somehow have been linked to heretical cultivation.

Not to mention the horrifying ordeal it had been to realize Wei Wuxian was the stricter parent while Wangji was the indulgent one. The last said about that, the better.

Still, he persevered. The two children were easy to love. So good natured and well behaved for their young age that it was hard to find any fault in them. They reminded him much of Wangji and Xichen when they were young.

Naturally it was when he had come to terms with such things that something else happened.

Wangji had invited him and Xichen to have dinner in the Jingshi and they'd shared a quiet, pleasant evening. He was looking forward to asking how his niece and nephew, now five, had been settling in their classes when the menace spoke.

“We're having another baby!”

Lan Qiren stared blankly at the pair, unable to think of anything to say. He had many questions of course, but experience told him that they would go unanswered.

Always the more social between them, Xichen recovered first. “Oh congratulations!”

“Thank you, Da-ge!” and with a hand in his stomach, he added: “The new little one will be with us in around four months.”

“We had wanted to be sure before announcing it to the family,” Wangji explained.

Resigned to their antics, Lan Qiren offered his well wishes as well.

With no end in sight, their story goes on:

Holding the latest addition to their family, Lan Wangji couldn't wait to introduce little Lan Yun to his older siblings and the rest of their family.

They were both being watched by Wen Ning at the moment, while Wen Qing had been there for the birth, tending to the mother — a young woman they had met during a night hunt who had become pregnant by accident and had no wish to care for the child. The Wen had been happy to offer her a place amongst them during her pregnancy, and even after should she want it, and he and Wei Ying couldn't have been more eager to welcome the baby as theirs.

It was rather easy for them to do so after Wei Ying had spent years spreading the belief that their children were theirs by blood. Lan Wangji did not help exactly, repeating vague, but true statements and standing in silent support next to his husband couldn’t be counted as lying.

No matter how aware he was that the rules were not meant to be taken literally he would stand firm by his stance on this. Wei Ying’s joy was more than worth it.

“Aiya aren’t the two of you the sweetest sight? Have you even moved since you picked him up?”

His husband laughed as he shook his head, wasting no time in making his way to them. Reaching out for a kiss, Lan Wangji smiled too.

Being with Wei Ying truly changed his life in more ways than he could’ve imagined, from the little things like acquiring a taste for teasing his loved ones to experiencing more happiness than he’d ever thought possible.

He wouldn’t have it any other way.

Notes:

Little things I wasn't sure how to include in the fic:
- A-Yuan and A-Song are said to be miracle children/demonic cultivation children, but until the third kid comes along and Wei Wuxian spends a whole while talking about being pregnant, people aren't sure if he birthed them or if he grew them somewhere, since someone overheard him telling his kids he'd grow a sibling for them like one grows a raddish and somehow this ended up in a rumor that he was making kids mad scientist style
- It's known that Wei Wuxian found more family somewhere since they do visit all the time but they're basically cryptids and people do wonder if it isn't just an excuse for wangxian to go on family trips
- Nie Huaisang is the only one outside of family who knows everything thats going on and he's here for it, he stays close friends with them after the conference just for the entertainment. He's also encouraging some of the weirdest gossip

This is my first attempt at writing something cracky, I hope it wasn't too bad. Feel free to scream at me on the comments or at my Tumblr ! :)
