The Price of Gifts

Summary:

Immortality isn't free, gods get curses and have to live with them forever. There are only two exceptions to this (or so everyone thinks).

When another dragon starts causing chaos, a dragon that has the ability to speed up the gods' curses just by them being in her presence, cookies turn to Wind Archer and Fire Spirit. The two exceptions

On the other hand, there's a new god that seemingly has no name attacking everyone. Big black wings, a magic visor blinding their sight, despite that he seems to have accuracy that could rival Wind Archer's. And so, he's turned to for another task. One that's impossible for him to complete.

Notes:

Just a small explanation for something, I think Sea Fairy and Millennial Tree have adopted each other as siblings despite not being related.

Chapter 1: Unfrozen Again

Chapter Text

Gods have to deal with many things in life. Cookies tend to have this belief that gods are untouchable, that the gift of immortality came with no drawbacks. However, the gods knew all too well that that wasn’t the case.

In their eyes, existence itself was a gift, and for regular cookies, the price they had to pay for that gift was mortality. For gods, they have curses they need to deal with.

Sea Fairy’s frozen state, Moonlight’s sleep, the Millennial Tree, those were well known curses that have been engraved into cookie mythology. Tales tell them all quite the same. There has always been a fight however, on whether or not the next generation of gods got these curses. Specifically, Wind Archer and Fire Spirit. Some say they were the lucky few that didn’t receive curses for their immorality, others say they do and are just good at hiding them. Not even most of the gods know. But the latter begs the question, why hide a curse if it was so normal?

***

Moonlight had invited over Millennial Tree and Wind Archer to keep her company while her wife was once again frozen. She would often become quite lonely due to her house being quite empty. With her adult son moved out and her youngest always off adventuring, she had only Sea Fairy to keep her company for most days.

She had been frozen for a few months now though, and the house had been unbearably quiet. Luckily, her brother in law and nephew were happy to keep her company while the time passed.

The only good thing about curses, was the fact that it would get easier to withstand most of them the more times they affected you.

The quiet atmosphere that had been there was quickly shattered as they heard the backdoor in the kitchen slam open and a few seconds later, a loud thud followed by a groan of annoyance and pain. Moonlight dashed to the kitchen to find her wife lying on the floor, all but her arm unfrozen, trying to get back up.

“I knew you could be stubborn but I think this is a new level,” she laughed. “You could’ve sent me a message and I would have grabbed you like last time, how’d you even get here?”

Sea Fairy huffed once again trying and failing to get up before she answered. “Water, it’s a very fast way of travel, if you’re immune to it that is.”

“Be careful! You haven’t been able to walk in months. I’ll grab your brother to lift you to the couch.”

Millennial Tree was two steps ahead of her though, as he quickly scooped up his sister and brought her to the living room to rest. Not without flinching from her body still being so, so very cold.

“I could’ve-” She tried to protest.

“Don’t say you could’ve walked over yourself, I’ve spent who knows how many decades as a tree and it took me weeks to be able to do something that even resembled walking. I’m sure in a few days you’ll be back to normal again but not just after you’ve been unfrozen.”

Sea Fairy stopped trying to argue while Millennial debated whether or not he should try reversing the ice on her arm. She eventually waved him away as a sign of “it’s fine” as Wind Archer walked over to the couch.

“If you really don’t have a curse, I’m so happy for you,” she told him. “And if by chance you do, I’m glad it’s not like mine.”

Wind Archer just chuckled as he set a blanket over his aunt’s shoulders as an attempt to try to warm her up as she was still shivering.

He did in fact have a curse, unfortunately. One that he felt was worse than being in an inanimate state for a long period of time. Of course, that’s probably how every god feels about theirs. He envied Fire Spirit because of this. To his knowledge he didn’t have a curse, if he did it never seemed to bring him down so it must’ve been an easy one.

Wind Archer loathed the day his aunts - no, cookies in general-, would figure out what his curse was.

“Let’s drift away from curses shall we?” Millennial Tree chuckled. Archer’s savior, his father. One of the few cookies who knew and the one that always kept away the awful subject. “Although, that does remind me, is there any bark on my arm?”

“No, Dad you’re good,” Wind Archer laughed.

“Good, I’m trying my best to not turn into a tree again.”

“You really should stop trying to delay your curse,” Sea Fairy said. “It gets shorter every time.”

“If I keep delaying it then it won’t happen again,” Millennial Tree grumbled.

Sea Fairy rolled her eyes as Moonlight tried to tend to her frozen arm.

“How long do you think it’ll stay like this?” She asked.

“Maybe a day at most. The rest of my body unfreezes within minutes, but it’s always gotta be one limb that refuses to melt off..”

“Maybe I can get Fire Spirit to help you,” Wind Archer laughed. He received a light smack to the back of the head from his father. He knew it was because of two reasons, one, that wouldn’t work because the ice on Sea Fairy is impossible to melt off unless it was from her own heart. And two, he was still in trouble from the last time they hung out.

“Thanks for the offer,” Sea Fairy chuckled, as Moonlight came back. She sat down next to her wife and gave her a kiss on the cheek
