Kate held onto Lucky’s leash tightly as they stepped outside. Lucky was prone to running off as soon as he tasted a whiff of fresh air. And sure enough, as soon as they got onto the sidewalk, he was pulling at the leash, trying to chase every squirrel he spotted. Kate held on for dear life, trying not to let him escape.
Beside her, Yelena laughed. “He’s pretty excitable, isn’t he?” she said. “Oh yes, be smug just because your dog is boring,” Kate said, rolling her eyes.
Yelena gasped in mock offense. “Boring? Kate Bishop, I can’t help if my dog is actually trained ,” she said, Fanny trotting obediently beside her.
Kate smiled. “Whatever, my dog is just as trained as yours.” As if to prove her wrong, Lucky suddenly yanked his leash out of Kate’s hands and started running down the sidewalk toward a pretzel cart.
Kate looked at Yelena sheepishly. Yelena smiled. They both quickly took off toward the runaway dog.
After they caught Lucky, it was only a couple blocks to Central Park. Once they got there, Lucky calmed down some, the familiar setting comforting.
He only tried to run away a few more times, after a squirrel, a stray cat, even a random plastic bag. But Kate kept a tight grip on his leash. They walked in silence for a few minutes, enjoying the quiet morning air, only punctured by the sounds of honking and yelling from the city.
Yelena threw her arm around Kate’s shoulder as they walked, and Kate leaned her head on Yelena’s shoulder happily.
“I’m glad I’m here with you, you know,” Kate said. Yelena smiled and kissed Kate’s forehead.
“I’m glad I’m here with you too, любимая.”
