Chapter 1: Writ

Chapter Text

The gold fountain pen halts over the paper, the second blank space left unfilled when sharp blue eyes flicks upwards to the two other figures in the room. Caitlyn looks at her mother pausing her signing of the very necessary and important writ of consent with a raised eyebrow.

Cassandra shifts her attention fully onto Vi, who seems to be paying more attention to the tip of her boots than her. "What's your full name?"

That caught Vi's attention, "Huh?"

"What is your full name? Is it just 'Vi'?"

Something in how Cassandra said it seems to rubbed Vi in the wrong way. "What? Just 'Vi' isn't good enough for you?" She may looked distracted when they first met (Caitlyn's bedroom ceiling still looks fucking unreal) but she remembers the 'stray' comment.

Caitlyn sensing the tension starting to climb immediately interjects, "I'm quite sure people in Zaun are familiar with Vi. Anything else could possibly make it confusing." She knows what she said is inadequate reasoning for her mother, Cassandra knows she knows, but Caitlyn quirks her eyebrow ever so slightly as a small gesture to drop the issue.

Cassandra appears to deeply consider something for a moment before sighing once and let it slide. With a flick of a wrist, 'Vi' is scrawled under 'Caitlyn Kiramman' on the writ and Cassandra stamps her official seal and signature at the bottom of the document.

Caitlyn breathes a sigh of relief. With an official writ from a councilor, even her fellow enforcers would be hard-pressed to deter their efforts in finding Jinx. They would now finally be able to comb through both cities with significantly less red tape. The true grunt work could begin.

Caitlyn quickly rolls up the writ and places it in a small scroll case on her belt then pushes the adjustable table away from her mother's bed. She straightens out her mother's stationary, closes the ink bottle and returns to her perch next to Cassandra on the bed. She's careful to not to jostle the intricate metal rods and supports jutting out of her mother's leg, the sight of it still makes her visibly cringe as if she's experiencing the pain herself, and hugs Cassandra tightly.

"Thank you."

Cassandra cradles her daughter as strong as she could without agitating the bruises and aches on her body. She might regret agreeing to sign the document but she really is out of options. There's no one else for her to trust to investigate this matter anymore. Not the Enforcers, not the other councilors. Her daughter has given enough convincing arguments as to why she and Vi should continue looking for Jinx on their own. Now all she could do is to hope that Caitlyn and Vi comes back home every night unharmed, no matter how impossible it seems. Cassandra whispers to the side of Caitlyn's head, "Be careful."

Caitlyn slowly pulls away, kisses her mother's cheek and ushers Vi and herself out of her parents' bedroom. She takes a few deep breathes outside of the closed door and looks at Vi with her jaw set in determination. They will find Jinx.
