All you had to do was ask

Summary:

After Luz tells Gus about a human game that involves chocolate and kisses, he wants to teach Mattholomule how to play it, in hopes of getting a kiss from him.

As far as Matt is concerned, Gus really didn’t have to go to all that trouble.

I just wrote this story. I didn’t make the art.

Work Text:

“Wanna play a game?” Gus had asked.

Now Matholomule stared in confusion at the box of little sticks. Apparently they were chocolate, a sweet delicacy from the human realm. The side of the box read ‘Pocky’ in bold, blocky letters.

“How do you play this game?” Matt asked, crossing his arms. Something about the way Gus was smiling gave him the feeling this wasn’t an ordinary game.

Gus smiled wide and took a stick. “Here, hold the end of this in your mouth, but don’t eat it.” He held out the stick.

Matt raised a brow. “Okay…” He bit the end of the stick and held it between his teeth.

“Now what I do is bite the other end. And then we try to see who can eat toward the middle first. Whoever gets more chocolate wins. But you automatically lose if you break it,” Gus explained.

Sounded simple enough, but…

“What happens if we both get to the middle at the same time?” Matt asked.

“Then we’re supposed to kiss,” Gus said.

Oh.

Matt’s eyes blew wide, cheeks on fire.

“Ready?” Gus asked with a grin, holding the other end of the stick between his teeth.

Matt definitely did not squeak.

Gus took a big bite forward on his end of the stick, face coming closer.

Matt squeezed his eyes shut, having already forgotten how to play this weird human game. His heart was pounding against his chest.

Suddenly, Gus stopped.

Matt opened his eyes when Gus released the stick from between his teeth with a happy smile. Then he took Matt’s end of the stick and pulled it out of his mouth.

What was he doing?

Then suddenly, Gus’ lips were on his and Matt’s eyes blew wide again, the heat in his cheeks exploding.

Gus was kissing him!!!

It only lasted three or five seconds, then Gus pulled away with a smirk and ate the rest of the stick on his own.

Matt shivered at the tingling sensation left on his bottom lip. His face burned hotter at Gus’ smirk on him and he did the only thing he could do; bury his face in his hands and groan in embarrassment.

“I like that game,” Gus said.

Matt wanted to die.

Wait a minute.

Matt glared up at Gus. “You took the whole thing!”

Gus laughed and Matt loathed how it was like music to his ears and made his heart melt.

“Did I forget to mention the point of this game is to kiss?” he asked.

Yes! Yes, he did forget to mention that!!

Matt groaned into his hands again. Ugh, he was burning up.

“That’s so stupid,” he grumbled.

Gus winced, smile falling. “Yeah, I guess it kind of is…” he said, looking down at the floor.

Matt gulped, heat crawling down his neck. “If you wanted to kiss me, all you had to do was ask, dummy…” he said, gazing steadfastly at the wall.

A moment passed and Matt regretted saying what he’d said, until Gus tapped his shoulder. Matt turned to him and Gus was smiling, a shy pink dusting his face.

“Can I kiss you?” he murmured.

Matt’s heart skipped a beat. He nodded.

Gus kissed him again, softer and longer this time, threading gentle fingers through Matt’s floppy hair and…

Matt thought maybe that weird human game wasn’t so bad after all.
