Work Text:
To be fair, Jay put himself into this situation but it didn’t make it any easier to deal with.
‘This situation’ was that Jay had organised to meet up with Kai at lunchtime to study for Maths but he had forgotten about the plans he had made to finish his engineering project at that same lunchtime. His engineering project was due the hour following the lunch break so Jay had gone to the workshop rather than the library.
The lightning master had been so immersed in his work he’d forgotten to text Kai about the change in plans.
After that break, Jay didn’t have any classes with Kai until Monday morning so therefore he wouldn’t see the fire master until then.
That schedule arrangement wasn’t the best for Jay’s nerves, it would soon seem.
After the end-of-lunch bell rang, there was essentially radio silence between the two. That only added further to Jay’s anxiety.
By the time the end of the school day came, the anxiety and nerves were clogging up Jay’s lungs and making him jittery like when he was charging up to use a large burst of his lightning.
As soon as he got out of class for the day, he started typing out texts to Kai.
There ended up being a string of outgoing texts which were all over the place in terms of content.
Hours passed and there was still not even a single message from Kai.
Jay had tried to work on his chemistry homework but he was unable to focus, he kept thinking about the whole situation and that kept screwing up his working out in the questions.
Then at 9 PM, his phone dinged with a new message, from Kai.
It was a response to his message from a few hours ago (JWalker: Sorry I skipped out on us studying together, I forgot that I’d also organised to finish my engineering project at lunch ) that read: Don’t worry about it, it’s fine. Really. See you on Monday?
It even had proper grammar and all. It read as sounding genuine but it was a text message, Kai could mean it in a sarcastic way.
Before he could get lost in that train of thought, the master of fire sent another message.
KSmith: jay. you know i mean it, right? it’s really fine.
How did Kai know what he was thinking?
JWalker: Yea, I do.
KSmith: sure. how boring was ms white?
JWalker: boring enough for me to fall asleep.
KSmith: wow. that bad??
The conversation continued and as it did Jay began to feel better. The crushing weight of the anxiety that had been building all day began to lighten.
