Memories (Castiel x Deceased!f!Reader)

Summary:

This specific one-shot takes us to Sam, Dean, and Castiel, reflecting on the apocalypse and what they had lost in the process. It's...been a while, honestly, but I am pretty sure this is vaguely based off S12's apocalypse. This eludes to a happier ending for Castiel being able to visit his human lover's soul in heaven, and one of these days I should write the fluff of that.

Work Text:

The three men, well, two men and an angel, sat around with a beer bottle each.  Each man felt a little bit of emptiness inside of them this day, and yet, they drank together to preserve the memories that they had.  They drank to the world not ending, though they did lose a large part of it during the apocalypse.  Most of all, the three drank to the memory of Y/N L/N.

The apocalypse had recently ended, and the three boys were left with the unfortunate casualties that came of it.  After a sullen hunter's funeral, staring upon the burning body of a woman that they all held so dearly to them, they had convened in the bunker to share memories of the woman, of you.  After years of hunting with the Winchester boys, and a few years learning to love the quirky angel Castiel, you left them.  You left this world that they knew, but you did so valiantly.

You, a woman who was dragged into the hunting business at a young age, never wanting to kill for a living, had stopped the apocalypse.  Though you would not have been able to do so without the help of the Winchesters, or Castiel, you were a hero to their story.  Those three men would never forget the young woman looking down on them.

Castiel sat beside Dean, while Sam sat opposite of him.  Beers in their hands, they joined together in a clinking motion.  Though smiles lay upon all three men's faces, tears pricked in each of their eyes.  "To Y/N," Castiel claimed first, the words falling off of his lips with the type of frailty that was to be expected from a lover who lost someone so dear to him.

"To Y/N," both Sam and Dean Winchester replied, hastily and with heartiness to their tone.  The Winchester brothers had lost many important people in their lives, each of varying degrees, and this specific name hit both of them hard.  As the glasses clinked together, each was brought to the owner's lips, taking the first sip in the memory of their fallen companion, sister, and for Castiel, lover.

"I remember this one time," Dean had started after swallowing a swig of his alcohol, his lips curling upwards ever so slightly in remembrance, "back when Y/N still had a fear of Cas.  She was such a good hunter, but when she knew he was there to help, she was such a scaredy-cat. She practically tripped over Sammy and I when you poofed into the motel we were staying in.  Back then, I would have never imagined she would have grown so close to you."

"Y/N was such a quirky human," Cas said with a chuckle, before taking another swig of his drink.  "She always looked at me strangely in the beginning, but when we were on that first vamp nest case, she pushed me backwards and killed the vamp that was attacking me.  Quirky, and yet she was also the most resilient, beautiful human I ever laid eyes upon."

"She really was something else," Sam said with a smile, though he could feel the tears that lightly pricked his eyes.  After those words, he had paused for a moment, as if to gather his thoughts before truly speaking, in fear that the happiness would turn to tears in mere seconds if he had said anything incorrectly.  "She's saved our asses more than a few times, and always had a smile on her face."  Taking a deep breath and another sip of his beer, he continued.  "Remember back in Wichita with the wendigo case?  This was before we met Cas, but back when we met her.  I-I remember her swinging in with a machete and getting the two that we missed."

"She was just like Laura Croft with a machete when we first met her," Dean said thoughtfully with a laugh.  "Hairstyle and all."

"Even Bobby loved her when we first brought her back to his place," Sam chimed in thoughtfully.  "I remember him specifically thanking her for watching out for his idjits."

"Y/N was family," Dean said in a soft tone, staring at the beer in his hand.  "She always will be."

"Remember that time that she got Cas hooked on Game of Thrones?" Sam said in excited remembrance.  "I swear we didn't see either of them for a solid week."

"That was the week she first told me that she loved me," Cas said, biting his lip gently as he spoke.  "She said when we started binge watching that she wanted me to be her Gendry to her Arya.  That reference took me a while, but as we watched the show, I finally got it."

"Every reference used to take you a while, Cas," Dean said with a chuckle.  "Hell, some still do."

"You are not wrong," Cas replied begrudgingly, followed with a soft chuckle.  "She was so strong, though.  I never expected her to leave." His lips curled into a frown as he spoke, staring at his drink.

Dean reached over, giving him a consoling hand upon his back, and a gentle, reassuring smile.  "She was freaking badass," he said thoughtfully.  "Have you gotten the chance to visit her yet?"

Castiel shook his head, sighing softly.  "I want to give her a little time to adjust to her own personal Heaven before showing up," he said thoughtfully, his voice a little mournful as he spoke.  "Though I have heard from other angel's that she is there, and safe from harm."

"You better tell her both of us miss her when you do," Dean said with a smile, Sam nodding agreeably with his brother.  "And I'm sure she would love to see you."

The three men finished their alcohol and went their separate ways for the evening.  Since the apocalypse, this would be the first time in months that the Winchester brothers could rest easy, at least for a day.  Castiel, on the other hand, would not rest tonight.  After all, his angelic grace would not call for slumber.  Instead, he would go to see Y/N L/N, in her own personal Heaven.  As nervous as he was to see his lover, he knew the Winchester was right, and that it was time.
