Work Text:

Nick and Charlie have dated for a while now. It’s common knowledge amongst their circle that they’re attached at the hip, at least romantically now.

But it didn’t stop Nick from throwing in a cringey pickup line into silence, whether they’re awkward or comfortable. The blonde just loves the way Charlie’s eyes always light up with a roll, or how he frowns and then his lip turns up as he tries to not laugh, or how he’ll blush.

Charlie blushing at them is a rare one, but it has to be Nick’s favourite reaction. Charlie always tucks his face away into the palms of his hands, avoids direct eye contact and groans at just how stupid the pick up like was in the first place.

It was a boring Monday. The rain was heavy in Kent and outside just looked dull. Charlie’s eyes reflected grey skies and a frown just as sad as the clouds above them.

“Charlie,” Nick whispered over to him.

“Hmm,” Charlie hums.

“Feel my scarf. It’s made out of boyfriend material.”

A proud smile sits on Nick’s face as Charlie snorts at the pick up line.

“Yeah, boyfriend material, all right,” Charlie giggles as he takes the scarf away and wraps it around his neck. “Look who has boyfriend material now.”

“Well, maybe we’re both boyfriend material.”

“Nicholas Nelson, I’m gay, I’d hope I’d be good boyfriend material.”

“Charles Spring, I am bisexual, I am good boyfriend material, and so are you,” Nick says, making his accent thicker, posher, full of more life and humour. “You’re an amazing boyfriend.”

All Charlie could do was hide his head in his hands.

Nick struck his next cringey pick up line when he was at Charlie’s house. They were sitting on the floor of his room, door slightly ajar - much to their dismay - doing homework.

Once again, Nick was struggling with maths, and Charlie was helping him, not that neither of them minded as Charlie sat between his legs and went through the quadratic equation with his older boyfriend as many times as needed.

“Char,” Nick interrupted. “My love for you is like dividing zero, it can’t be defined!”

Charlie snorted.

“Do your homework, nerd,” The brunette smirked as he removed himself from Nick’s arms to sit on his drum stool.

“No,” Nick whined. “Charlieeee, come back.”

The older blonde made grabby hands towards his boyfriend, giving golden retriever energy with his big sad puppy dog eyes and a pout that would make anyone coo.

“Fine, but no more math pick up lines. They’re the worst.”

“Are you a 45 degree angle? Because you’re acute-y,” Nick giggled.

“No.” Charlie lightly smacked the other’s shoulder before allowing Nick to pull him towards his arms. “I hate you.”

“I thought I was supposed to find ‘x’ but instead, I found you.”

“Nick!” Charlie squeals into the crook of the rugby player’s shoulder.

It was during one of their Saturday picnics in the park that Nick decided to surprise Charlie, with another pick up line.

They were about to stand up and change the positions of the picnic rug so that their eyes were out of the light of the sun, and in the shade of the tree.

If Nick was being honest, he didn’t plan this one out, it just kind of happened. He slipped on his untied shoelaces and came crashing down onto Charlie.

“Hey Babe, I think there’s frost on the ground, cause I just fell for you,” Nick winked as he picked himself off of Charlie. The brunette groaned as he sat up and shook his head with a teasingly disappointed smile.

“You’re such an idiot,” Charlie beamed at him.

“Yeah, but I’m your idiot.”

“Yeah, you are. Idiot.”

Charlie brought their faces together, the fear of being stared at or noticed was long gone in both of the boy’s minds. Nick’s lips were soft against Charlie’s cold ones, soft breath fluttered onto Nick’s growing facial hair. Charlie’s long locks were scooped out of the way and tucked into Nick’s hands, not wanting to let the other go.

It was a sweet kiss, but not a short one. Charlie moved his lips down towards Nick’s chin, leaving small kisses along the way.

“I love you,” Charlie said unexpectedly. They had said “I love you” before, but never had Nick been so happy to see the words with such a genuine smile dripping from Charlie’s face.

“I love you too,” Nick sighed, connecting their foreheads together. “I love you more than the universe.”

“Yeah, well I love you more than Nellie,” Charlie chuckled.

“Wowww, that love must be very strong if you love me more than Nellie.”

“Yep, it is. It’s stronger than anything.”

Nick smiled.

Charlie was tucked under Nick’s arm as they sat and watched a movie on the Nelson family couch. Sarah had gone out to dinner with some work friends, and so Nick and Nellie were left alone in the house, well, until Charlie came along to keep them company.

It was Nick’s favourite movie, the Avengers. While it wasn’t Charlie’s favourite, he did love watching Nick’s face light up with joy as he watched a scene in awe that he had viewed over a hundred times before.

“Hey,” Charlie whispered. “Did it hurt?”

“Did it hurt when I fell from heaven?” Nick raised his eyebrow.

“No, from Asgard, because you’re clearly a god.”

“Charlie!” Nick blushed, pushing Charlie away from him as he tucked his face into his knees, laughing as much as his lungs could allow him.

“What?” Charlie laughed. “Am I not allowed to tell you cringey pick up lines?”

“Yeah, you are, but I didn’t think you’d be good at it!” Nick cried. “That was such a good one, what the heck?”

Charlie gasped. “I’m offended that you think telling cringey pick up lines off the internet is hard.”

“Yeah, well,” Nick stammered. “It’s hard to remember one for every situation.”

“You’re such a cutie, you know,” Charlie kissed the top of the blonde’s head. “My beautiful boyfriend.”

“No, you’re my beautiful boyfriend!” Nick bear hugged Charlie and rolled them onto the soft carpet. His fingers carried themselves down to Charlie’s torso.

“Nick, don’t you dare,” Charlie said, knowing what was coming next.

Nick’s fingertips moved across the cloth covered skin, tickling the younger man until he couldn’t breathe out of his laughter being so strong and consistent. Eventually, Nick got bored so he pulled back, bringing Charlie into his lap and arms and hugging the man until he calmed down.

“I hate you,” Charlie puffed.

“Aww, I love you too.”

“I love you more.”
