Work Text:

Saguru had just finished eating supper when his doorbell rang.  Feeling slightly perplexed, he headed to the door, glancing out the window to see who it was.

Hattori and Conan stood on the other side, each of them holding...were those Kaitou KID plushies?

"Hattori-kun?  Conan-kun?  What are you doing here?"  Saguru asked, opening the door.

Hattori held up his KID plushie in an almost grim manner.  "To talk about these."

Saguru blinked slowly.  "All right...come in."  He said, opening the door the rest of the way and allowing the other two detectives to walk in.  As they took off their shoes, Saguru found himself glancing at Conan.  Kaito had told him that he was actually Kudou Shinichi, and to actually see it in person was...strange, to say the least.

After they had removed their shoes, Saguru guided them to the living room, offering drinks more out of politeness than anything.  Both Hattori and Conan turned it down, so Saguru sat down on the couch waiting for them to speak.

"I was staying with the Mouris this week."  Hattori began, lifting up his plushie.  "When we woke up these were in our rooms."

"I see."  Saguru replied, wondering why they found this important enough to come all the way out to Ekoda to tell him.

"We couldn't figure out why."  Hattori went on.  "And we were wondering if ya got one yerself."

"I did not."  Saguru folded his arms together in thought.  "Do you believe they came from KID himself?"  Kaito hadn't told him of any such plans,
but -

"There was a KID card with the KID doodle attached to each one.  It looked exactly like the ones on his heist notices."  Conan piped up.

"I see."  Saguru said again.  "Is it a cause for concern?"

"We don't know, that's why we came ta talk ta ya."  Hattori sounded frustrated.  "We don't know why he did it."

"Oh, I can answer that."  A new voice smoothly interjected in the conversation.

Conan and Hattori went rigid.

"KID."  Conan hissed, any childishness vanishing from his expression.  "What are you doing here?"

"I'm just here to clear up any confusion."  KID waved a hand, moving closer.  Conan flipped up his wristwatch.

"I'd appreciate it if you didn't use that in my house."  Saguru said dryly.  Conan glanced at him and hesitantly lowered his wrist.

"It's fine, Tantei-san."  KID said, almost absently.  "Do you like them?"  He added, looking at the KID plushies, a certain gleam in his eye.

"No.  Why did you give them to us?"  Conan demanded.

"I'm hurt."  KID placed a hand over his chest dramatically.  "Here I am, trying not to play favorites, and this is the thanks I get?"

"Favorites?!"  Hattori sputtered.

"Favorites."  KID confirmed, and to all of the detectives' startlement, waltzed over to Saguru, closing the gap between them and plopping onto Saguru's lap.  "You see, Tantei-san has me.  However, I cherish all of my detectives and I didn't want either of you to feel left out!  So now you all have your own KIDs too."  He explained, voice bright, relaxing into Saguru's lap, perfectly at ease.

The three detectives stared at him.  Hattori and Conan squawked in indignation as Saguru slowly wrapped his arms around KID.

"What do ya mean Hakuba-kun has ya?!"  Hattori sputtered.

"Well, Tantei-san has lots of thieves he's chased after."  KID told him, patting the top of Saguru's head.  "But I am special.  And he is my detective.  But you are also my detectives in different ways, so I didn't want to make you feel left out."

"We didn't feel left out!"  Conan's voice had a concerningly murderous edge to it.  "What is your problem?!"

"So rude."  KID sniffed, wrapping an arm around Saguru's neck.  "Maybe I do like him better than you."

Saguru sweat dropped.  The lighting surrounding Conan seemed to darken as he reached for his watch again.

"Very rude!"  KID sounded hurt.  "You really don't like them?"

"I hate them!"  Conan's voice rose.  "Stay out of my house!"

"Tantei-san, are you hearing this?"  KID sniffed again.

Saguru looked at him, then Hattori and Conan, then back again.

"Ya wouldn't."  Hattori said flatly.

"I'm sorry."  Saguru said politely, soothingly patting KID's back.  "But I'm afraid you've upset him, and you need to leave now."

"Ya would."  Hattori said, almost wonderingly.  "Ya actually would."

"You're siding with him?"  Conan said incredulously, staring at them before realization dawned on his expression.  "Oh hell you're dating, aren't you?"

"Don't swear, Conan-kun."  KID chided, in a feminine voice, one that Saguru recognized as belonging to Mouri Ran.

Conan's face went bright red and he jumped to his feet.

"You bast -"

"All right, we should probably go."  Hattori said hastily, laying a hand on Conan's shoulder.  "C'mon Conan-kun, we have our answer."  He hissed something else in a lower voice too, which Saguru couldn't quite make out, but whatever it was it made Conan reluctantly nod his head.

"I'll make sure to attend your next heist KID."  Conan added, voice threatening, tapping his belt before leaving with Hattori.

The moment they left, Saguru leveled an exasperated look at KID.

"Why did you do that?"

"Chaos."  KID replied, stretching on Saguru's lap.  "And because I can."

"You were feeling insecure since I started doing more things with them, weren't you."  Saguru sighed, knocking the top hat off of KID's head.  "Kaito."  He added, cupping KID's face.

Kaito froze for a moment, before shaking his head.  "No, why would you think that -"  He started, but Saguru cut him off.

"I love you, Kaito."  He said firmly, giving him a gentle peck on the lips.  "Not them.  You're my thief and partner.  All right?"

Kaito shifted, looking uncertain for a moment before curling into Saguru's chest.  "Even if they like Sherlock Holmes?"  He ventured, voice quieter than usual.

"You know."  Saguru told him, petting the back of Kaito's head.  "I've found the Arsene Lupin books more interesting as of late.  I enjoy Sherlock Holmes Kaito, I always will, but don't ever think I like them more than you."

"...I know."  Kaito mumbled against his chest.  "I don't like Sherlock Holmes more than you either."

"I certainly hope not."  Saguru chuckled, and Kaito sat back up, eyes sweeping over the spot where Conan and Hattori had sat.

"They took the KID plushies back with them."  He commented, a smug grin stretching out across his face.

Saguru blinked, also noticing the lack of KID plushies.  "So they did."

Kaito beamed at him.

Notes:

Somewhere, in the deepest darkest most obscured shelf in a closet in Kudou's house, the KID plushies sit, carefully stored and taken care of.
Kaito's solution to feeling insecure is to make chaos. Then again, that seems to be his solution to a lot of things.
Thanks to Pink Paradox for betaing!
If any of you have any Hakukai ideas/prompts for a fic, feel free to comment and let me know! I cannot guarantee I'll do something with it, but if I think I can/want to write it, I probably will. I'm always looking for new ideas for these two lovable
idiots XD
I'll also mention who suggested the prompt in the introduction notes to give proper credit :)
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it!
