Work Text:

An and Kohane were starving after their latest performance with their unit, so they broke off from the boys to find something to eat.

If Vivid Street was beautiful during the day, then it was even more so at half past midnight. The neon-colored lights emitting from the shop signs reflected off the pavement of the road and illuminated the graffiti covering the building walls. It was comfortable as it was vibrant.

The two both admired this fact as they brushed shoulders while walking down the street, taking the opportunity to catch a glance at each other. They both smiled in response and kept the same proximity for the rest of the trip. Their fingers brushed against each other, but no one chose to acknowledge it.

They finally found a restaurant that was open; a vacant ice cream parlor. It looked like something out of a movie; the oversaturated lights washed out the space, with teal walls, a checkerboard floor, and red booths to match. The two opted to sit at the one closest to the door, their legs being tired from dancing so hard.

Kohane let out a sigh of relief. “Ahh, it feels so good to sit down.”

“Doesn’t it?” An replied, slouching into her seat.

They mostly made small talk at first, mostly discussing the performance they just did. The biggest highlight was them being surprised at the vast amount of flavors on the menu, especially An.

“I can’t believe they actually have rum raisin ice cream!” The orange-eyed girl exclaimed.

At one point, their hands somehow made their way into the other’s grasp. They realized this at the same time, pausing what they were doing for a second and slowly pulling away. It’s happened a few times before; their hands sometimes ended up intertwined when they got too invested in conversation. This time, An seemed to pull away quicker than the other.

Since they were the only ones there, the two swiftly received the milkshakes they ordered. An began to twirl hers around with her straw. “Hey, Kohane, if I can chug this in ten seconds, you have permission to kiss me, okay?”

Kohane stared at the girl across from her attempting to do just that as she sipped her own peach shake. Out of the dozens of times An has said that to her, she managed to mess up each time, so Kohane patiently waited for her to whiff. And she did; An slammed her back against the back of the seat with a quarter of the milkshake left in her glass.

“Ugh, ice cream headacheee…” she whined, dramatically holding her hand to her forehead. Kohane simply giggled. And being nothing out of the ordinary for the two, that was the end of it. Until it wasn’t.

After a few moments of silence and swirling milkshakes, Kohane was the first to say something.

“You can just ask, you know…” She quietly muttered.

An fixed her posture. “What do you mean?”

Kohane swirled her milkshake faster. “Like, you always do these things where I’d kiss you under certain circumstances, and there are these times where I think you want something more but I just can’t tell so this is me saying that i-if you want to kiss me, you can just…” she trailed off, visibly turning red.

An looked dumbfounded.

Kohane regretted what she said, as seen by the changing look on her face. “Ah! I’m sorry I said all that, I don’t know where it came from, please just forget everything I just sai-”

“Kohane, can I kiss you?”

She stopped swirling her drink and looked up at the girl whose voice that came from. To Kohane, she was always beautiful, but she was especially in this moment; her long, navy blue hair delicately framed her face. The expression painted on was one of curiosity and genuinity. Kohane wished she had her camera with her so she could capture the sight in front of her. But she didn't, so the next best choice was to nod immediately.

They both leaned in, and the butterflies in their stomachs threatened to burst out in an instant. But they persevered, and they met lips. Kohane tucked those same hairs in front of An’s face behind her ears. In response, An cusped Kohane’s jaw with her palm, gently holding her face and deepening the kiss. It was so impromptu but it felt so right, like it needed to happen. Sure, they were in a random ice cream parlor, and sure, it was 1 AM, and sure, maybe people were passing by on the brightly-lit street staring through the window, but that didn’t mean anything, because wherever they were, they only needed each other.

They pulled away after a moment, both smiling, but Kohane couldn’t make eye contact. Not only did she just confess to the girl that she was pining over for so long–and for An, probably even longer–but she just had her first ever kiss with her. She didn’t know what was going to happen after that. Luckily, An broke the silence, for better or for worse.

“This milkshake is pretty sweet, but you’re even sweeter.”

Kohane covered her face in both first- and second-hand embarrassment. “You’re ridiculous sometimes, An-chan.”

Eventually, they both laughed. Things were going to be just fine.
