Overworked

Summary:

As Sam toils away at the paperwork for an important case, Max seems more and more determined to vie for his attention.

Small ficlet for fun.

Work Text:

Sam was getting paperwork done for a big case.

Or at least, he would've been, if his vision hadn't been assaulted by a mass of white fur.

The only light in the room was his (mostly) ever reliable desk lamp and the constantly droning TV. The main light had blown a while ago and Sam was too tired to root round their apartment for a replacement bulb. He supposed he could ask Max to do it, but the guy's height made tasks like lightbulb changing...a challenge so to speak.

He had no doubt he looked somewhat of a mess by now. He'd shed his jacket, hat and tie a long time ago. His shirt was scruffily untucked, top button open and fur disheveled.

It'd been a very long day. His tiredness meant the only way to keep the words from swimming was to bring them as close to his eyes as possible.

His nose was practically touching the page in front of him, words filling his vision. At least they were before Max arrived.

Little guy had been bothering him for attention all day. He knew the guy got bored, but he always seemed to take it to a new level whenever Sam needed to work hard on an important case.

He'd left Sam in peace at first. Then as the hours wore on, he'd began to nudge at him, trying to get him to move from his paperwork. Now that it was late evening it felt like Sam couldn't go 10 minutes without his partner trying to capture his attention. Didn't help he'd got more and more bold about it as the hours had gotten longer.

Speaking of which, Max was at it again. Little guy had poked and prodded, both verbally and physically, trying to tear him away from his desk to come and watch TV or come to bed.

After telling Max to shoo for the fifth time the rabbit had taken the direct approach and unceremoniously wedged himself between Sam and the paperwork.

He slid back on his chair, brow furrowing in annoyance at the rabbit laying across his paperwork.

"Max, would you shoo already? I don't have time right now!"

"Sam, you've been at this for hours! Come on, let's just watch TV or som- gah!"

Max was pushed off the desk, tumbling to the floor in a heap of tangled limbs.

"I said shoo." Sam stated, returning to his paperwork.

Max untangled himself before standing up to glare at Sam. "Rude!" He said with a huff.

Sam just ignored him.

Max continued to glare as he crossed his arms. He heard Max's foot tapping on the floor.

Sam continued with his paperwork, moving onto the next form.

Max continued his glaring. Sam continued his paperwork.

He heard the tapping stop suddenly. He glanced over at Max out of the corner of his eye to see the guy looking at the floor, brow furrowed.

Whatever he was concocting in that fuzzy little head of his, it better not be about interrupting him.

The familiar sound of Max scrambling onto his desk filled his ears.

So much for no interruptions.

Max scooted over slowly, likely aware that Sam was more than willing to thwack him off the desk for one wrong move.

Finally Max came to be kneeling just in front of him, nearly on top of the paperwork.

He let out a tired sigh before looking up.

"𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵, Max?"

Max leaned forward and kissed him.

His eyes went wide with the initial suprise. As Max's hands moved gently cradle his cheeks however, he felt his eyes drift shut.

All thoughts of paperwork faded away as he got caught up in the kiss, happily giving in without thinking.

He instinctually moved to pull Max closer, arms wrapping around the rabbit. As Max shifted however the sound of rustling paper quickly pulled Sam back to reality.

He broke the kiss, shaking his head. "Max, would ya stop! I need to finish thi-"

"No! You don't! You've been at it all ni-"

"Max I can't stop working just because you want atten-"

"I don't want attention, I want ya stop working yourself to the goddamn bone for one minute you idiot!"

Sam felt his mouth snap shut.

Max crossed his arms, looking down at the desk in a huff. It'd be cute if he weren't so angry.

"I knew this would happen." He said angrily. "We get a big case and you always go full "detective mode"."

"And your solution was to bug the livin' daylights out of me?"

"It is when you just ignore me whenever I just straight up tell you!" His eyes snapped up to Sam. "I tell ya to stop working and ya just ignore me! Distracting you is the only way I can get ya to relax for a damn minute!"

"That's...really why you've been buggin me all evening."

"Of course it is." He said softly.

Oh.

He felt Max's hands cup his cheeks again.

"It can wait 'till tomorrow, Sammy. Take a break. Please? For me?"

Sam felt himself melting a little at that tone of voice. Little guy always did know how to twist him round his little finger.

He let out a sigh, soft smile on his lips.

"Fine, Max. You win."

Max beamed at him.

He got up with a stretch, realising just how sore his back had been. He instinctually scooped Max up before making his way over to the couch, flopping onto it and making the rabbit in his arms laugh.

"So, anythin' good on?"

"Some zombie movie looks like it's startin'. Could be gory."

"Zombie movie it is then."

The movie droned on in the background, though he was struggling to stay awake. The constant snuggling and purring of his partner in his arms didn't help. The little guy's warmth and the ever familiar comforting sound began to have him drift off.

Just before the sleep took him fully, he felt a kiss on his cheek.

"Night Sammy."
