Work Text:
Despite him being a child of Apollo, Nico has never heard Will sing.
Sometimes he’d hum under his breath as he healed, or whistle a tune during battle, but he’d never sung. Not during camp sing-alongs, not even in showers. Whenever Nico asked, Will laughed it off and said he preferred to leave that to his siblings.
Nico stopped asking after a little while, but he couldn't help his curiosity, and the question continued to nag at him.
The answer, however, was not something he would have ever expected.
-
Nico was in the infirmary, again. Will had him on bed rest for the next week after he had to shadow travel a particularly long distance to fight some monster.
Honestly, he wasn’t even that hurt, but no force on this earth could stop Will when he got worried.
Luckily for him, he would have most of this time to himself. Will had just discharged the last injured camper, and summer break would be ending soon.
It would only be him and Will.
Not even Chiron’s knowing looks could bring his mood down, not when he could finally get some privacy with his boyfriend.
“Good morning Sunshine! How are you feeling today?”
Will’s smile was so bright Nico felt like he had to look away.
“I’m doing a lot better now that you’re here,” Nico grinned as the tips of Will’s ears turned red.
“Stop flirting with your doctor, I’ll have you know I’m in a happy and committed relationship.” Will stared down at him with a raised eyebrow, a grin still on his lips.
“You could probably do a lot better than him.”
“Too bad, my boyfriend’s perfect and I love him.”
Oh, the L word. Nico could feel a blush creeping up his cheeks. They had only said those words recently, but Will loved telling Nico he loved him at any given opportunity.
Nico didn’t think he’d ever get used to it. He didn’t want to get used to it.
Being loved was such a novel feeling.
Will’s grin turned mischievous at his red face.
“Yeah, my boyfriend’s super smart and strong, and he has some of the coolest powers I’ve ever seen. He also-”
Nico threw a pillow at him, his face beet red.
“I get it, your boyfriend's cool!”
Will threw the pillow back and leaned over to kiss his cheek.
“I’m glad you agree.”
The blond turned and began cleaning up around the infirmary, and Nico took the time to watch his boyfriend in action.
Will was in his comfort zone here. He knew the infirmary better than anyone and ran it with an iron fist. Nico loved how passionate his boyfriend was about helping others.
His boyfriend.
Nico didn’t think he’d ever get used to that either.
It seemed like a pipe dream, all those years ago. After Bianca, he resigned himself to being forever alone. It wasn’t until he met Hazel that he had let himself open up to closer bonds, but romantic relationships had still been off the table.
Until he met Will, of course.
Nico had been so caught up in his thoughts that he almost missed Will beginning to hum to himself once again.
It was something he probably wouldn’t say out loud, but Will’s humming was Nico’s favourite sound. He never understood why Will would say his voice was terrible, not when his hums sounded like they were coming from an angel.
Maybe Will was an angel. Nico wouldn’t put it off the table.
Will always felt a bit too good to be true.
-
They stayed up into the night. Will’s infirmary work made him an exception to the curfew, and Nico was more than happy to monopolize his time.
Somehow, both of them had ended up on the infirmary bed, with Nico resting his head on Will’s lap. The blond’s hands combed through his hair, and Nico pretended he wasn’t leaning into the warmth.
Will had started humming again, and Nico noticed his hands had gained a faint glow.
Nico stared up at his boyfriend, smiling softly as warmth filled his chest. He couldn’t believe how lucky he was.
Will’s humming seemed to reach a crescendo, and just as he reached its peak, his mouth fell open.
The first notes of a beautiful melody flew out, and Nico felt his eyes grow heavier before his vision went black.
-
He woke up to a hand gently shaking him.
“Neeks? Are you with me?”
Will’s face was staring down at him as he blinked open his eyes, not even realizing he had shut them.
“Oh, I didn’t realize I fell asleep. How long has it been?” Nico rubbed at his eyes and moved to sit up.
Will chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck.
“It’s only been a few minutes, actually, and you didn’t fall asleep.”
Nico furrowed his eyebrows.
“What do you mean?”
“Uh… Istartedsingingandyoupassedout.”
Will’s face was cherry red, and Nico was almost too distracted by how cute his boyfriend was to process what he had said.
“Wait, what? I passed out from you singing?”
The blond let out a tired sigh as he slumped against the bed.
“I’m not sure why, but every time I sing, people pass out.”
“Is this like… a child of Apollo thing?”
“Nope, just a me thing. None of my siblings have this.”
The son of Hades pulled his sulking boyfriend into his lap.
“Is that why you never sing?”
Another sigh.
“Yeah, it’s never fun making people pass out.”
Nico buried his face into Will’s neck, soaking in the warmth.
“Well, from the little I heard, I think you sound amazing and I would love for you to sing again.”
Will lightly shoved his face away, but Nico knew his boyfriend had enjoyed the praise.
Nico felt the blond relax against him, as they held each other in their arms.
“So… you’re like Jigglypuff?”
Will turned around to cuff Nico’s arm.
“How do you even know what that is?”
“I’ve been catching up on everything I’ve missed.”
Nico grinned at Will’s sullen expression.
“You are very lucky I love you, Deathboy.”
“Yeah, I really am.”
