Mike was too sleepy to be in a hurry. He considered Will’s face. In History, they were studying the Romans, and since seeing a bust of Augustus, Mike had become fixated on the fact that Will had a perfect Roman nose. Strong. Sharp, even sharper than Augustus’s. More elegant.
Mike blinked. “Go get your notes,” he said.
“Go shower,” said Will, a hint of a smile playing at the edges of his lips.
“Can’t,” said Mike. “Too hard. So tired.”
Will pushed off the doorway, took a hold of Mike’s shoulders, and oriented him in the direction of the shower. “You can do it,” he said. “I believe in you.”
He gave Mike a little shove, then turned and closed the door behind him.

Will sits up straight. “Hey, I’m here, okay? I’m alive. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“That’s not what I said.” Mike’s voice is heavy, swaying like a pendulum. “I said, tell me you’re not gonna leave me, that you won’t—”
“I’m not gonna leave you. Not if I have any say in it.”
It’s unquestionable.
It promises nothing other than his devotion.

He cannot imagine how this all feels for Will, to have the thing that has sunk him for over four years to be gone, or at least so far on the way out that it is impossible to come back.
They stand, opposite and distant, neither having the strength to move right now. Mike’s staring, and here he is crying, shaking with his tears because his best friend is free, because he is free and it is over.
