Chapter 1: Dandelions

Summary:

Sonic gets invited to watch a sunset with a friend of his.

Chapter Text

The showers of spring allowed the roots of plants to blossom, showering Green Hill Zone’s fields with newly budded yellow dandelions scattering the usually green landscape.

Some of the yellow hue flowers had blossomed into the usual round whitened bubbles, the seeds ready to be blown from the stem. A blue blur violently rushed in a narrow patch of the flowers, blowing the seeds from the dandelion stems. The speedster dug his red shoes into the ground, coming to a halt, the seeds blowing off the stems from the leftover draft.

Sonic lifted his hand over his enlarged eyes, shading them from the sun that was slowly descending in the sky, sunset was fast approaching. The blue hedgehog trotted around the field of dandelions, his eyes scanning the area. He repeated this until his ear flicked to the faint sound of his name being called in the short distance. Sonic turned his head, his face brightening up as he recognized the voice in a heartbeat.

“Hey Sonic! You actually came!”

The silver coated hedgehog yelled, enthused. Silver was slightly hovering above the ground thanks to his telekinetic abilities. His right arm was raised more than his left, waving towards Sonic with an expression of glee sealed onto his face. He seemed excited, almost surprised Sonic had the time to watch a sunset with him.

“Hey Silver! You know me, fashionably late!” Sonic answered with the same enthusiasm, his feet carrying him as he dashed towards Silver. Quickly, the grey hued hedgehog’s face turned to panic as he realized Sonic was rapidly approaching.

“Wait Sonic slow down! You’re gonna-!” Silver tried to warn, but was cut off. Sonic pulled on the breaks late, which sent him tumbling into Silver. The telekinesis wielder didn’t have time to react, quickly being thrown backwards as the two bowled down the hill of dandelions.

Silver ceased the moment in panic, his hands quickly grabbing onto Sonic’s upper arms, attempting to reassure himself they were safe. However, Sonic replied with a laugh, he seemed to be enjoying the ride. Silver’s ears perked to the sound of Sonic’s laughter, a smile forming on his own face upon hearing it. Soon both were filling the air with their bursts of joy, the two seemingly happy for another’s company despite the dandelion seeds getting tangled in their furs. Their ride was cut short as the hill curled into a more flattened landscape.

Sonic and Silver landed, Sonic being pinned on the bottom and Silver on the top. Sonic’s legs were drifted towards the right of where he laid while Silver’s body was a bit diagonal to the left of Sonic. Their cackling continued for a few moments more, the two looked at each other with warm expressions. Both their gazes gave off tranquil feelings to one another, as if they enjoyed the other's presence. Silver nor Sonic even realized their positions, Silver blaitly getting off the blue hedgehog moments after, rolling onto his back next to the blue blur.

Both their eyes shot a quick glance at once another before looking up at the orange hued sky, peach colored clouds scattering it like islands in the sea. The hedgehog’s spines were matted with dandelion petals and seeds, all curled and tangled in their pelts, but they didn’t seem to pay much mind to it.

“Uh… Hey, thanks for coming. You have a lot on your plate, keeping Eggman at bay, keeping track with your other friends, I’m just grateful you took the time to be here.” Silver spoke, “It’s not often I do this with other people, maybe sometimes with Blaze, Espio, and Knuckles… Everyone else? Not so much.”

“It’s cool Silv, hanging with you here every now and then helps me let off steam. Granted, it’s slower than what I usually prefer, but sometimes it’s good to stop and smell the roses y’know?” The blue blur responded in his usual smug manner, a side smile greeting Silver’s view.

“But there aren’t any roses.” Silver muttered, raising a brow in confusion. This just made Sonic laugh again, “You dork, that’s just a saying.” Sonic retorted in a snicker, joking of course.

“Oh, I see.” Was all that Silver could reply with.

The two fell silent again, their eyes looking back up at the sky. The night grew closer as the hedgehog’s laid still on their backs, the time passing.

Sonic finally spoke up, pushing himself upwards to sit up. The colors of sunset were now infected with the dark shades of blue and black.

“Alright Silv, I’m gonna go to Tails’ place to hit the hay.” He said, expecting a reply from Silver that would make him laugh again. When no response came, the hedgehog turned his head with a puzzled expression on his face to his left. Silver was on his side, body curled like a shrimp’s, his hands laid in front of his muzzle, his expression calm and reserved. The silver hedgehog had fallen asleep, his chest rising and falling slowly, every once in a while his ear or hand twitching.

Sonic’s face of small concern changed to a light smile. Knowing his friend shouldn’t sleep out in the open by himself due to Eggman’s recent spike in attacks, he thought up a solution. Sonic carefully wriggled his hands under Silver’s body, hoisting up the sleeping hedgehog into his arms. Silver briefly opened his eyes before dozing off again in response.

Sonic took a minute to breath in the air before trotting off, Silver curled in his arms. His light trotting turned into a run as he pressed each step into the ground. The dandelion seeds were once again separated from their stems, the gentle wind of Sonic’s speed carrying them upwards. The yellow petals and seeds stuck in both the hedgehog’s furs loosely hung on, most falling off and being caressed in the wind.
