Work Text:
"So."
Very suddenly, Steve appears next to her, carrying a big box full of kid's clothes as Robin prepares more sandwiches and she just knows he is looking for a distraction.
"Melissa is pretty."
And Robin has to think for a second who he is referring to, a knife full of peanut butter hanging in the air as she pauses. "That she is." She agrees, finally remembering the girl who received the stuff they brought over.
"And she was very nice to you." Steve adds after a second as she resumes her task at hand.
At that, Robin rolls her eyes, pushing a sandwich aside and starting another one. "She's most likely volunteering here, it's kind of, you know, necessary, to be kind if you are gonna be helping people."
But he just laughs, shaking his head full of hair at her.
"Oh, Robin." Steve says with that voice that makes her want to punch his face sometimes. He lays a hand against her shoulder and she quickly shrugs it off. "Robin, Robin, Robin." He continues.
"Stop saying my name, you weirdo." Robin reprimands but he stands there like he doesn't have piles and piles of clothes to sort out.
After a second, he finally moves away.
"Fair enough, you don't wanna hear it," Steve says, walking backwards and she wishes for someone's foot to appear and trip him over as his smug expression appears over his face. "But you can't escape the truth, my friend."
"You're so full of shit, Harrington." Robin calls as he widely smiles at her and she isn't cruel, but he is being annoying and what is their friendship if not endlessly teasing each other. "Nancy says hi, by the way." she adds with a mocking smile.
His face instantly falls at her words.
"Not cool." Steve says, pointing at her as he holds the box in just one hand. "That wasn't cool, Buckley."
She shrugs, going back to her sandwiches with a demure smile. "Sorry." Robin says.
After all, she knows Nancy is pretty much a sore spot for him, especially after seeing her and Jonathan reuniting today but he is being an ass about Melissa, when she is still a little bummed out after seeing Vickie with her boyfriend at that one war zone store.
If there is something that Robin doesn't need at the moment, it's crushing on more straight girls.
Or crushing on girls, period.
"Robin?"
She looks up from her task and, of course, Robin finds no other than Melissa herself, standing with a clipboard and a soft smile in front of her station and Steve's words stupidly echo back on her brain as Robin acknowledges her with a smile.
"That's me- what's up?" Robin asks, putting down the butter knife and she has never been good at social interactions, so her words come out like vomit out of her mouth. "Are the sandwiches alright? I'm following what they told me to do-"
But Melissa promptly shakes her head, her smile widening as she looks over at the tall pile of sandwiches ready to hand out to the people at the makeshift shelter. "The sandwiches are fine, Robin," She turns back to her and Robin leaves out a sigh of relief. "I came here 'cause I wanted to check up on you." The girl explains with a nod.
And Robin just knows Steve is smiling somewhere. The smug bastard that he is.
"Well, I'm doing just fine, Melissa," Robin explains as the girl closely listens to her. "I'm a great sandwich maker and I'm very happy helping people out." She stresses with a thumbs up that comes out just a little awkward.
Melissa laughs
And Robin realizes that the girl does have a pretty nice smile.
Oh.
Oh no.
"Okay, I'm gonna check on the other stations," Melissa says as her laugh dies down and Robin tries to not look like she's internally freaking out, picking up more bread and starting to prepare more sandwiches as so distract herself from her gay panic. "See you later?"
"Uh," Robin mumbles and over the girl's shoulder, catches Steve's wink and thumbs up all the way across the gym. What a fucking idiot. "Yeah, see you later, Melissa." She adds, glancing back at the girl.
And definitely tries but fails as she closely watches Melissa turn around and walk towards another station with her clipboard, her cute hair and her very nice smile in tow.
"I hate you so much, Harrington." Robin mutters under her breath.
Crushes are the worst.
