How Did We Get Here?

Summary:

Taurtis didn’t know where his friend went.

One moment they were heading home from the shops; the next, Grian disappeared while Taurtis was on the phone. Which has led to where Taurtis is now: staring down a dark alley that was closed to the shop that they were original at. Taurtis took a deep breath, trying to gather the courage to yell down the creepy alley, but a tiny chirp made him start running down the alley.

Notes:

Title name inspired by Minecraft challenge achievement.
Anywho, enjoy!

Work Text:

Taurtis didn’t know where his friend went.

One moment they were heading home from the shops; the next, Grian disappeared while Taurtis was on the phone. Which has led to where Taurtis is now: staring down a dark alley that was closed to the shop that they were original at. Taurtis took a deep breath, trying to gather the courage to yell down the creepy alley, but a tiny chirp made him start running down the alley.
He knew who that chirp belonged, but he did not expect his friend to be cuddled to a giant egg.

“Uh…Grian?”
Taurtis asked uncertainly, crouching down in front of his friend.

But Grian just continues chirping and coddling the egg. Taurtis just chalked it up to being the bird brain part of his friend’s mind and just sat beside Grian.
At this point, Taurtis didn’t know what to do; he didn’t experience this part of Grian much. Due to Sam throwing fits about it makes Grian extremely self-conscious about this part of himself. But it was refreshing to see Grian embarrass this part of him and be happy.

“Taurtis, when did you get here?”
Grian asked, finally snapping out and looking at his friend.

“Just a few minutes ago, the bigger question is, when did you lay an egg?”
Taurtis asked, pointing at the giant egg.

“Well, I was chasing down a cat, then the cat knocked down a trashcan, making the egg fly out. Then bird brain went crazy,”
Grian smiled, hugging the egg in his lap.

“Well, what do you want to do with it?”
Taurtis asked, putting a hand on the egg.

“I don’t know, maybe bring it home? Like I know it is risky because of Sam, but there is something about this-”
Grian was cut off by a hand on his face.

He looked up to see Taurtis smiling at him before he was helped up from the ground. Taurtis took off his suspenders to make a makeshift wrap, so Grian didn’t have the carry the total weight of the egg.

“Let’s go home!”
Taurtis smiled, taking one of Grian's hands and the small bag of groceries in the other.

They walked for a few minutes down the block and made it back to their shared apartment. Both were worried about Sam being home and didn’t want to risk it. So Taurtis was in to ensure Sam was out and returned to Grian. Then they walked back up, sat the groceries on the table, and sighed when the door closed.

“Most stressful minutes of my life!”
Taurtis whispered, sliding down against the wall, watching Grian make a quick nest on their bed.

Grian laughed as he quickly threw a bunch of blankets and pillows into the nest and climbed in. He took off the suspenders holding the egg and gave them back to Taurtis, who was changing into comforting clothes. Grian sits the egg down and then covers it with a few blankets before curling around it.

He sees Taurtis walk around to the other side bed, crouching at Grian’s eye level.

“May I get in the nest?”
Taurtis smiled, and Grian nodded.

Then he crawled into the nest, curling around the other side of the egg.
They fell asleep peacefully that night.

—----
A few days later, the group decided to turn in for the night early, and Grian and Taurtis curled around the egg like they usually do.

“Hey, Taurtis?”
Grian asked, running his hand up and down the egg.

“Yeah?”

“What if we found another place to live? At least for a bit until we can get off this server into a new one. I just feel like this place is not a safe place, and I want to give this egg the best future I can even if they are not human,”
Grian explained, avoiding all contact with Taurtis.

“Well, you want to start looking now?”
Taurtis said, startling Grian a bit, while he grabbed his phone.

“Yeah,”
Grian smiled at the man across from him.

They didn't answer if someone asked why they looked sleepy the following day. Because they knew they would give their egg the best future they could.
