Work Text:

Alex wondered when his past would ever stop catching up to him as he stood in line at the bank in the middle of San Fransisco.

He was only suppose to be here to cash a check and then leave, but looking at the man that stood staring at him from across the bank, Alex wondered how he was going to be able to leave without causing an international incident.

The man staring at Alex was none other than Klaus, his old classmate from his training with Scorpia. Unlike Alex, Klaus was still very much apart of Scorpia, and was now making his way towards Alex.

“Hello Alex. How have you been?”

Alex glared at Klaus. There was nothing Alex could do. He was in a bank of foreign soil filled with civilians. Even if Klaus did have an active warrant for his arrest, there wasn’t a safe way for Alex to apprehend him. Which is exactly why Klaus had been bold enough to come to him.

“Is that anyway to treat an old school mate?”

“It’s not like we were friends”, Alex finally replied.

“True, but I feel like we would have gotten on if you had been at Malagosto longer.”

Alex didn’t say anything. Part of him knew what Klaus was saying was true. While they hadn’t been friends, Klaus had never been unkind to Alex and if Alex had stayed there, it would have been possible that they would have become friends. Or at least what passed for friends in Scorpia.

Klaus stiffened and Alex turned to look to where Klaus was looking. He turned just in time to see the outline of a gun hidden beneath a man’s jacket. He looked over at Klaus, who had in turn gone back to looking at Alex.

“What are your men playing at, Alex?” Klaus said.

“He’s not one of mine.” Alex replied.

There were plenty of explanations as to why this man had a gun, and how he had gotten past the metal detectors. Alex himself had gotten past with his own gun with a flash of ID. This man had probably done the same. He was probably just an off duty cop.

But if that were the case, then his instincts wouldn’t be screaming at him that there was danger. And Alex had learned to trust his instincts.

He watched as the man approached the teller, and thats when he saw it. A quick sign in sign language that Alex had learned himself. It meant go time. Alex took a step forward but before he could even put a hand on his own weapon, the man drew his gun and fired into the ceiling.

Alex felt himself being pulled to the ground at the same time that everyone else dropped to the ground. He turned back to give Klaus a questioning look.

“Are you looking to get into a fire fight?” Klaus whispered.

Alex grimaced. He knew Klaus had a point. He couldn’t risk getting in a fire fight here. There were too many civilians. No, it was better if he played along for now.

“Everyone stay down!” The man yelled.

Alex looked around to see where his partner was but didn’t see anyone else. Who had he given the sign to?

“The teller.” Klaus whispered again.

Alex looked over at the teller, who was quickly grabbing money as the man pointed a gun at her. To everyone else, she looked frightened, but as Alex looked more closely, he could see that wasn’t the case. Her movements were to methodical, like she had prepared for this.

Watching them, Alex came up with a plan. He would need help though. Alex looked at Klaus.

“Want to work together one last time?”

Klaus smirked and nodded. They watched, waiting for their moment of opportunity. The man had the money and began running when Klaus stuck out his leg.

The man tripped, sending him sprawling to the ground. Klaus moved fast, wrestling the gun out of the man’s hands before the man could even comprehend what had happened. At the same time, Alex had gotten up and ran forward to the teller. He quickly hopped over the table and pinned the woman’s arm behind her back.

Alex looked over at Klaus, who was grinning from ear to ear.

Alex stood back and watched as the cop car drove away with both would be bank robbers in tow. It wasn’t how he imagined the end of his mission going but then again, his missions never did go as he expected. He looked over at Klaus who was walking towards him once again.

“We make quite the team. Are you sure you don’t want to switch sides?” Klaus said.

“I could ask you the same thing.”

Klaus laughed and stuck out his hand. Alex looked at it for a second before figuring to hell with it and shook it.

“I hope we don’t see each other again anytime soon”, Alex said.

“Likewise.”

Alex watched as Klaus walked off and disappeared into the crowd. Despite himself, Alex found himself thinking that it had been good to see Klaus again.
