Work Text:
It didn't normally rain in July in Hawkins, Indiana. But it did that day.
The summer before Will Byers and Mike Wheeler went to high school. The summer before they wouldn't see each other again, after 9 whole years of playing D&D in Mike's basement, getting bullied by stupid Troy and stupid James, and Will getting into some kind of trouble with the Upside Down.
It felt like a video game, a movie, a television series.
Maybe for just one last time Will could get the smell of the forest when it poured. He knew he wouldn't be able to do so again after he moved to hot, dry, California. Even Mike telling him over the phone or in letters about it wouldn't feel the same.
He wouldn't get to be there.
They both let their newly bought summer clothes get soaked one last time, together, Running through tall trees, prickly sticks, and hard rain. It made the two feel like they were 7 again, when they ran around in the rain for no reason.
Will accidentally bumped into Mike, falling right into his arms as they both fell onto the dirt that quickly became mud. It was disgusting, but it was memorable. They laughed, play fought, and smiled.
Too bad it would be the last time they got to do so.
" You're such an idiot, Michael Wheeler. ", Will said, standing up and picking off leaves that stuck to his arms.
" I know, I'm your idiot, William Byers. ", Mike replied, also standing, but not to clean himself off.
Will was suddenly bombarded with a quick kiss to the lips, not given enough time to react before Mike kissed him again, and again, but this time to other parts of his wet face.
He tried to get something out, but every kiss only made Will laugh and giggle, his instincts making him give Mike kisses back, making it so they missed each other every time.
Until they accidentally reached each other's lips.
That kiss was longer than any other one they shared that afternoon, Will grabbing onto Mike's shoulders as Mike grasped Will's waist. They didn't want to go too far, it felt just perfect for them.
Even as the rain got harder, it didn't change a single thing.
