He didn't remember what his mother looked like, only her sound. Her voice was high and honey-sweet as she told him to stay by the train station and wait for her, but underneath was a sound like rice boiling over in a pot. He hadn't known what the sound was as a toddler, just that it was the sound of his mother, that it was familiar and it comforted him in some twisted way. It was the sound of deception and annoyance and anger, but it was all he had heard since birth, so he had to learn to love it. He had nothing else.
