A Lifetime of Longing

Summary:

Mitsuri survives the final fight and lives, and she tries to find solace alongside Giyuu and Sanemi in the aftermath of Muzan's defeat and the following years later while dealing with the loss of her fellow Hashira and the feelings of longing and guilt when it comes to the Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro.

Notes:

A little bit of rewriting and small changes, as Mitsuri lives and in this adaptation, the demon mark ended with Muzan's defeat, so they are able to live past 25.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Guilt Favors the Lovers

Chapter Text

That was it. An eerie silence clung in the air. That was it. The years of killing demons, losing loved ones and fellow Demon Slayer Corps members have come to an end.

Muzan was dead and along with his death, countless slayers and Hashira sacrificed their lives for the good of humanity. The following days after Muzan's defeat were a mix of melancholy and relief. There was much to do, rebuilding and cleaning up the aftermath along with disbanding the remaining Demon Slayer Corp members.

Only three Hashira remained. The Wind Pillar, Sanemi Shinazugawa, The Water Pillar, Giyu Tomioka and The Love Pillar, Mitsuri Kanroji.

Mitsuri lived with an immense amount of guilt, for living when Obanai Iguro, the Snake Pillar died. Obanai, who managed to keep Mitsuri safe until the very end, even after she broke both of her arms and passed out from the pain. She came to in time to see Obanai crawling to her scarred, blind and bleeding heavily.

Mitsuri, while being in immense pain, cradled the Serpent boy as best as she could in her broken arms. She carefully brushed his ink black hair out of his face and whispered into the crook of his neck, thanking him for saving her, for sacrificing his life for others. She looked into his mismatched eyes, the same eyes she fell in love with the first time she gazed into them while lost inside Oyakata-sama's mansion. She was crying, salty tears burning the scrapes on her face. Muzan was defeated but now Obanai was dying. Obanai was aware he was going to die soon. They both knew it and there was nothing left to do.

"Mitsuri" Obanai croaked, his voice sounding small, "I've loved you since the very first time I saw you"

Mitsuri knew this, hell they both were aware they loved each other, both were too timid to make the first move. The timing never felt right, the threat of having to drop everything and fight was always around the corner. She regretted not saying anything before.

"Please Mitsuri, live for me. Find happiness you deserve in this life. You were always so kind to me, you made me feel like a normal person. Like I was worthy of being loved. I could never say anything about my love for you, my bloodline was cursed and you deserve more than me"

Mitsuri was crying, the physical pain she was feeling didn't compare to the emotional pain she was feeling, she felt her heart shatter into pieces, Mitsuri felt  like she couldn't breathe, gasping for breath in between sobs.

"Obanai" she let out, "I've love you since you helped me in Oyakata-sama's mansion. I was so scared but you went above and beyond for me always. I will always love you and you deserve the love I feel for you. Please, in our next lifetime, please make me your bride!"

She saw his scarred mouth curl into a small smile, she gently placed a small kiss onto his mouth and he reciprocated. Deepening the kiss in quiet desperation, knowing their time together in this existence was limited. They broke apart and whispered sweet nothings to each other while Mitsuri cradled Obanai's tired and broken body, ignoring her own pain. She told him how much she appreciated the time they spent together while she whispered about how she would have loved to spend the rest of her life with him, waking every morning in each other's arms. She held onto him fervently, knowing what was coming but unable to accept it. She peppered his face in kisses, wanting to give him the love he deserved to depart this earthly plane with.

She held onto him until she felt his heart slow down and eventually until she felt nothing. Refusing to let him go until members of the Kakushi gently coaxed her into letting them take him away, to prepare for burial.

Mitsuri thought of this day often, every moment of every day, Obanai was on her mind.

Find the happiness you deserve in this life
