Chapter Text
The sound of keyboards clicking softly echoed throughout the computer lab as April struggled to finish her coding homework. Suddenly three shuriken shot through the air and landed right onto her desk.
“Donnie! How many times do I gotta tell you not to throw those here! Someone could get hurt!”
“Sorry, April! Anyway! How may I help thee this fine day?” Donnie crooned as he leapt down from the ceiling and landed into a seat next to April.
“I need you to help me with this code for computer class.” April explained as Donnie pushed her aside.
“Consider it done! April, you are so lucky to be in high school! Oh how I wish I could drink from this well of knowledge! Alas, I am but a mere mutant! No human would even breathe in my direction! Besides you of course.” Donnie dramatically pouted as he tapped away at the computer keyboard.
“High school isn’t that great. All you do is try to get good grades so you can graduate. Honestly I’d rather be a ninja like you.” April snickered as she watched Donnie work.
Donnie suddenly stopped typing and let out a dramatic gasp. He jumped out of his seat and put a hand on his chest.
“April! How could you say such a thing?! High School is the gateway to the realm of knowledge! Just look around! This room is overflowing with scholars after my own heart! Being a ninja doesn’t even compare to the sweet, sweet feeling of learning. How could you take this sanctuary of knowledge for granted?!”
April stifled a giggle at Donnie’s over the top tirade.
“Knowledge is what makes this dying world go round, April! It’s what keeps my skin green! It’s what keeps your glasses clear! Why, there is nothing more important than learning! Not even that fair maiden in the second row- Wait a minute!” Donnie’s overdramatic speech screeched to a halt.
There, sitting on the end of the row in front of him was a curly haired girl at war with her coding project. Her sparkly purple fingernails stomped across her keyboard as her eyebrows furrowed. She grumbled and grunted as she wiped away the beads of sweat that poured down her face.
Despite her frustrated demeanor, Donnie was captivated.
“That freckle dusted skin! The exquisite lavender hues in her silky blue locks! Those fashionable yet functional glasses! The look of absolute focus on her face! Oh she’s magnificent!” Donnie drooled as his eyes locked into the object of his affections.
WHAP!
April kicked the desk, snapping Donnie back to reality.
“Donnie, if you drool in here something’s gonna short circuit.”
“She must be a goddess. Here to bless this undeserving world with her infinite beauty.” Donnie sighed dreamily as clutched his chest.
“You mean Iris? She’s just the new girl. She’s really shy and doesn’t like to talk to people.” April explained casually.
“Iris...Oh what a heavenly name the gods have blessed her with!” Donnie gushed as he spun around in his chair.
“Ugh. Finally! I thought I’d never figure out this bullshark code! Now hopefully this assignment will be smooth sailing. I just need to add a few more things and I’ll be finished in no time!” Iris huffed as she took a swig from her sparkly ocean themed water bottle.
“Did you hear that?!” Donnie’s eyes lit up.
“Hear what? She’s just working on the assignment.” April tilted her head in confusion.
“True my good friend, but her voice. It’s so melodic! It’s like she’s singing ever word she speaks! I bet she’s probably a straight A student! I have talk to her, April! I must claim her before some undeserving fool tries to taint her!” Donnie announced dramatically as he sprung up from his chair.
“You’re doing what now?”
April was shoved aside before she could protest.
“Wow! I still can’t believe I actually got through this assignment! I don’t think anything can ruin this moment for me.”
Iris’s celebration was cut short by Donnie’s enthusiastic voice.
“Greetings, My radiant goddess! I’d like to introduce you to your future boyfriend , wait for it, it’s me!” Donnie declared dramatically as he struck a pose.
Iris let out a surprised squeak as she leapt out of her seat, her glasses almost sliding off her face in the process.
“What in the name of Davy Jones’s locker?! W-Who are you?! ” Iris stuttered as she adjusted her glasses.
“Donatello Von Ryan! Master technician! Coding genius! World class artisan!” Donnie boasted as he pranced around Iris’s desk.
Before Iris could respond, Donnie suddenly wrapped his arms around her waist and gently dipped her.
“And passionate romantic.” Donnie purred softly as he leaned in closer. His half lidded eyes gazed deeply into Iris’s own purple eyes.
Several other girls had taken notice of Donnie’s performance. They let out excited squeals before promptly falling to the floor.
Iris opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out.
She felt like someone stepped on her stomach.
She barely knew this boy and he was talking about being her boyfriend?!
Iris was so uncomfortable she felt like she was going to die!
All she wanted to do was wriggle put of Donnie’s grip and maybe even slap him for his creepy behavior.
Unfortunately fear kept her frozen in place. All she could do was let out a nervous giggle and pray that someone would save her.
Her prayers were answered! Her hero came in the form of a very angry April.
April stormed over, peeled Donnie off of Iris, and shot him a death glare.
“Donnie! What are you doing?! I am so sorry about him!” April apologized as she dragged Donnie off by his purple hoodie.
Iris regained her balance and dusted herself off. She immediately saved her assignment. She then rushed to the bathroom to calm herself.
“April! What gives? I was so close to wooing her! Why did you interfere?!” Donnie whined.
“I wasn’t interfering! I was saving you from making a fool of yourself! Donnie, you can’t just grab a girl and call yourself her ‘future boyfriend’. You need to take things slow. Otherwise you’ll freak her out.” April scolded and she folded her arms.
“Oh please, I am the epitome of charm and class! I’m certain I’ve probably stolen her heart! Now if you’ll excuse me! My goddess awaits.” Donnie scoffed as he marched past April
He was about to return to Iris only to find her desk abandoned.
“What?! I thought that class wasn’t supposed to end for another twenty minutes! Where did she go?!” Donnie wailed as he frantically searched Iris’s desk.
“I told you, you’d end up freaking her out, Mr. ‘Charm and Class’”
“No! It can’t be! I did everything perfectly! It worked when Lou Jitsu did it in his movies!” Donnie blubbered as he continued to run around her desk.
“Donnie, you’re not Lou Jitsu and life isn’t like a movie. You need to calm down and back off.” April commanded as she folded her arms.
“Back off?! I can’t just give up like that, April! Iris is my soul mate! I can feel it in the depths of my heart! In the name of love I shan’t rest until I make her mine!” Donnie declared dramatically.
“Donnie, you only talked to her for a few seconds. How do you know she’s your ‘soul mate’?” April reminded as she folded her arms.
Donnie was about to respond until Iris’s phone caught his eye.
“I think it’s time for a different approach.” Donnie chuckled darkly as he snatched up her phone.
“Donnie! What do you think you’re doing?!”
“Relax, April. I’m simply just hacking Iris’s phone so I can learn all of her interests and formulate a new plan to win her over.” Donnie stated as he begun to tap away at the phone.
“Donnie, are you crazy?! Put that phone down before I make you!” April growled as she tapped her foot.
“ Just let me add a few more adjustments-“
“Donnie!”
“Alright. Alright. I’m putting it down.” Donnie huffed as he gently put Iris’s phone back where he found it.
“I think it’s time you went home.”
“Awww, can’t I stay just a bit longer?”
“Now.”
“Ok. I can see when I’m not wanted. I bid you adieu, April.” Donnie huffed as he jumped back onto the ceiling.
However, instead of going home, Donnie squeezed into the air vents.
“Now to activate the tracking bug I installed in Iris’s phone so I can keep an eye on her” Donnie whispered to himself as he tapped the communicator on his arm.
PING!
“Shh! I knew should’ve put you on silent.” Donnie hissed as he slapped a hand over the communicator.
Meanwhile, Iris zipped into a bathroom stall and took some deep breaths.
“It’s going to be alright, Iris. Just breathe. School will be over in just-“ -Iris looked at her watch- “-three more hours and seventy seven seconds.”
Iris carefully avoided the toilet as she sank to the floor.
She pressed her back against the slightly vandalized stall door.
She couldn’t believe she actually managed to get away from that creepy boy!
He could’ve kissed her and gotten her in heaps of trouble with the teacher! Or worse!
Iris cringed at the thought of what would’ve happened had that nice girl not stepped in.
“My parents owe me big time for forcing me to suffer in this horrible place.” Iris seethed as she fidgeted with her golden seashell locket.
The locket jingled as she gently shook the pendant. Iris let out a frustrated sigh as she slowly got up and opened the stall door.
After what felt like forever, Iris finally made it back to class. She went back to her desk and took another swig from her water bottle.
“Hey, are you ok?” April inquired gently.
Iris nearly spat out her drink.
“Oh sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Eh. It’s fine. I tend to scare easily. ” Iris smiled as she put a hand on her chest.
“So I’ve noticed. Anyways I just wanted to say I was sorry about my friend earlier. He can be crazy sometimes.” April admitted as she rubbed the back of her head.
“Oh it’s fine! He just caught me off guard is all. I definitely was not expecting that.” Iris giggled nervously as she rubbed the back of her head.
“Don’t worry I won’t let him bother you like that again.”
“Thank you! I appreciate that. You’re April right?”
“Yup! And you’re Iris right?” April retorted playfully.
“You guessed it! Hey, do you have a hard time in this class? I know I do!” Iris mused as she gestured to herself.
“You have no idea,” April agreed, “do you mind if I sit with you?”
“Not at all!” Iris chirped, thrilled that he made a new friend.
April and Iris spent the rest of class cracking jokes and sharing stories.
The two girls were so caught up in their conversations that they almost missed the bells.
“See you at lunch?” April inquired as she flung her backpack over her shoulder.
“You know it!” Iris cheered as she gathered her belongings.
