The relationship – the person – Klavier had initially been seeking has never really existed. He’d been placing his hopes on Apollo as a symbol, back then, and not as a living human on his own journey. He’d exaggerated the meaning of every interaction, blown every smile out of proportion, and failed entirely to consider the way his expectations were harming them both. He knows, too, that the family he’s been welcomed into has done more for his confidence than any individual relationship ever has. He will never again lose himself in his need to please someone else, and Apollo will never be demanding in ways that might tempt him to try.
