If you just want some gentle Jon/Martin angst, this is the one to read.This series is set in the blank week between eps 23 and 24 of TMP series 1 but no knowledge of TMP is needed to read, it’s canon compliant and doesn’t contain any major spoilers. Hope you enjoy it.

Love blossoms, hate endures, and at some point those checks and balances can't keep the score.

This is a divergence from Volume 12, Chapter 497. In canon, Arthur is lounging at an Epheotan banquet when he receives a warning from Alacrya about a mysterious, continent wide killing pulse that obviously has absolutely nothing to do with Agrona. Arthur stays at the banquet and genuinely expects his friends to handle the fallout. These are the same people who have either remained completely stagnant in power or become functionally irrelevant compared to his own rate of growth.
In my divergence, Regis pops out of Arthur's core beneath a sound dampening ward and introduces him to a concept in power fantasies called power creep (maybe Fate whispered it to him in the Keystone). Arthur has inflicted this on the entire supporting cast a million times over and back. Now he just needs to step up and do the main character thing of solving the issue at hand so the story can move on.
(Note: You honestly don't even need to understand Volume 12's plot. If you've read the prior volumes, you practically know how everything outside of Arthur usually ends in disaster)
