Familiar faces (Tommy Shelby x Reader)

Summary:

Gunshots, shovels, explosions, pickaxes, ringing in your ears when the world turns deadly silent...those sounds plagued many men's dreams after they came home from France. Thomas Shelby was no different, a ghost of his former self, haunted by memories of war. He wanted a better life for his family but once he reached the finish line, a new one would already be waiting in the distance. Never to be reached. He was broken, he could never be satisfied with what he had, he trusted no one and his heart has been broken multiple times already.

The new face in Birmingham should have just been another of the bland inhabitants of Small Heath. But she was different. Too many questions arose about her, she was suspiciously perfect and as if to spite him, she found a way to him and his family. He didn't trust her at all. She was too strange. And then there was the fact that her face was familiar. An echo of a memory long lost.

When she came, the unrecognizable features of people in one of his nightmare slowly started turning into familiar faces. But which one was hers?

Chapter 1: A few words before we start

  Hello hello, my dear readers! My name is Gray and I am a terrible author that always starts new stories when the ones in progress haven't been finished yet, just like with this one. Oh well.

  I came up with the idea some time ago and just needed to write it so I did just that. While I have seen more of the Peaky Blinders than just the first season, I still feel like the period after Grace leaves town is the easiest one to write as there aren't too many characters yet and stuff isn't all that complicated as it gets later. And it also fits this theme well because the story will heavily reference the war times and I feel like it's better if they are closer to the events of the story.

  This is a reader insert but for plot reasons, your character does have a set surname. Won't say why but it becomes important later on. Also, I decided to experiment a little with the narrator in this one and the POV will be switching basically every chapter. I hope it won't become too chaotic because it was the only way I could think of writing this so the story would work as I want it to.

  There will be a lot of jumping in time so I will try to specify at least the years of every segment as I move through the story.
