Lucky

Summary:

“Scoot,” he whispers, and Chan makes space for him immediately. It must almost be instinct, at this point.

//

I tagged both & and / because as a standalone, this would be &, but in the context of the series it's in, it's /. I hope you enjoy it either way!

Work Text:

Felix isn’t sure what woke him up. The room is dark and quiet, but when he turns around to fish for his phone, he notices a faint shine coming from the top of the bunk bed. He shouldn’t be surprised that Chan is still up at this ungodly hour, but it makes his chest tighten with worry anyway. He has to do something.
Careful not to wake Changbin, he slides out of bed and climbs the ladder up to Chan’s bunk.
“Scoot,” he whispers, and Chan makes space for him immediately. It must almost be instinct, at this point. Felix climbs in next to him and regards his tired face, illuminated by the screen of his phone.
“What are you watching?”
Chan faintly shakes his head. He’s avoiding Felix’s eyes.
“Nothing. Just… scrolling through Twitter.”
Felix makes an executive decision. He gently takes Chan’s phone from him, locks it and slides it underneath the pillow. Thankfully, Chan lets him. Then Felix flops onto his back, holds out his arm, and pats his chest with his other hand.
“Come here.”
It takes a moment, but then Chan does follow the invitation. He scoots down a little and rests his head on Felix's chest.
Felix wraps his arm around him and starts carding his fingers through his hair. It’s been a humid day, so Chan’s curls are extra poofy. Felix loves them.
Chan sighs, and then Felix feels him relax against his side, tension bleeding out of his body. Felix turns his face into Chan’s hair and smiles.
“Thanks,” Chan whispers and slings an arm across his waist. Felix presses a kiss into his hair and pets it until he falls asleep.

Chan is still awake for a while – even the best cuddles can’t magically cure his insomnia – but Felix has turned his churning thoughts into something more like dull white noise at the back of his head. It’s more bearable, this way, and leaves space to focus on other things. Like the soothing warmth of Felix’s body, his soft, even breaths, and the steady drumbeat of his heart under Chan’s ear. It sounds like music and home.
Chan is struck again by how lucky he is that Felix found him. That they’re here, together, and how much it feels like fate. He tries not to take anything for granted – he waited too long, worked too much and fought too hard to take any of it for granted, now – but Felix makes it easy. There is no future Chan can imagine where Felix isn’t there with him. Here with him, like he is now, soothing Chan’s worries, holding him tight. He’s so lucky.
When Chan finally falls asleep, it’s not restless and plagued with nightmares. It’s peaceful, and his dreams are filled with freckles and sunshine and love.

Notes:

This is not the much longer fic I said I might write, but it is also set in the Home universe, so hey!
It's still possible I might write that fic at some point, but I make no promises, alas :')
Thank you for reading!
