Work Text:

When Kate got the call if she could pick up her drunk fiancée from her bachelorette party with the team she thought she would be met with a giddy and boisterous Lucy. However, when she walked into the bar and up to their table she found her in tears, curled up into herself with Jane trying to console her while the guys looked at her sheepishly.

“What happened?” Kate asked in shock as she swapped places with Jane and pulled Lucy into her. Who, upon realizing it was Kate, crawled into her lap and buried her face in Kate’s neck. Rubbing Lucy’s back with one hand while holding her head and caressing it with her thumb with the other, she levels a look at the guys that made it very clear they better start explaining themselves. She hated seeing her like this and there better be a very good reason for this situation or she would definitely have words with them tomorrow. When they’re not drunk and actually remember what she will say to them.

“I didn’t… not me”

“Talking… fun ”

Ernie and Kai drunkenly talked over each other trying to explain while Jesse was avoiding eye contact and looking at everything but her. Not making any sense of it she turned her head to Jane hoping she was sober enough to explain why Lucy was so distraught. What she didn’t expect was Jane to also give her a sheepish look. This had her really confused and a bit worried about what went down, but at least Lucy was already calming down and not crying too hard anymore. Meaning that whatever it was couldn’t be too bad.

“Uhm you see, I asked her about last names and who will take which”

“She wants to take mine. She will be Mrs. Whistler” Kate immediately replied with a smile on her face. She still couldn’t believe it at times that this amazing woman wanted to marry her and take her last name. When she had suggested that they could take each other’s last names, Lucy had just said no. She liked to have Kate’s name and have everyone know she was hers, but she didn’t need Kate to have hers. She liked the idea to be able to introduce them as the Whistlers instead of Whistler-Tara’s. So Kate had agreed, because how could she not when the love of her life wanted to take her last name and introduce them by it.

“And then the guys started bringing up the idea of combining your last names, which lead to this”

At this point, Lucy had pulled back and Kate could finally see her face. Reaching up she caressed her cheeks while brushing away the tears that were still slowly falling while resting their foreheads together. Rubbing their noses together she places a soft kiss on Lucy’s lips before pulling back and looking into her eyes. It got her a small smile and before she could ask Lucy started talking

“Our names. We can’t combine them. All the options are and or sound like Pokémon names, like Whistra or Whistlera. How can we be so right together but our names are not”

By this point, Lucy had started crying again and Kate was quick to pull her back into a hug and console her.

“But we don’t need our names to be able to combine. You’ll take my name and be Whistler and I can’t wait to call you that” The last part Kate had said in a whisper with a tone she normally only uses in the bedroom. Hoping it would perk her up and get her away from name combinations and back to the good things. By the subtle canting of Lucy’s hip and the way she could feel Lucy almost completely stop crying it seemed to have done the trick. Pressing a kiss to her head, Kate waits for Lucy to come out of her hiding spot in her neck before saying the next part

“Besides, this way the team has no choice but to call you, and us, Whistler every time they want to call you by your last name”

That had a big smile break out on Lucy’s face as she said “Yeah, they do” before turning back to Kate and kissing her soundly. Kate kissed her back happily but made sure to keep it short and sweet given that they were still sitting in a bar with the team.

After the kiss, they spend another hour at the bar with Kate making sure Lucy drank enough water so she would start sobering up a bit and not have a massive headache. As for the conversation, Kate was content just having her arms wrapped around Lucy, who was still sitting on her lap, and listening to the conversation. Only chipping in when a question was directed at her.

When they get back home Lucy had sobered up considerably and called her out on her last comment on how she can’t wait to call her Whistler. It turned into a playful discussion that ended with Kate showing Lucy for the rest of the night how much she indeed loves calling her Whistler.
