Summary
It’s late when Rosalie gets the call. Late enough that she visibly winces and rushes into the kitchen on her tiptoes to rip the phone off its hook before it can disturb her mother. Holding the thing up to her ear she hears nothing, the sharp contrast between the shrill ringtone and the following silence oddly chilling.
“Hello?”
Maybe there’s faint breathing on the other end? She closes her eyes, as if that might help the noise to become clearer.
“Hello?” She doesn’t know why she whispers this, but her throat closes up a little.
“Rosie? Rosie? Are you there?”
