+ Eärwen Gaiarwen Olwiel (b. Y.T. ~1212)- [See House of Finarfin]

- Curufinwë Fëanáro Fëanor Finwion (b. Y.T. 1169, d. ~Y.T. 1497)
- Faniel: This is a weird one
- Not mentioned in Quenta Silmarillion because: No one in Beleriand knew about her.
- The official story, according to Findis: "Before Finwë left with Fëanáro, Indis the Queen went to plead with him not to forsake her and their children. Finwë pledged again his love for her, and they begot a fifth child. But in the morning despite Indis's pleas Finwë left indeed for a place where she was not welcome. Grieved and fearful, Indis withdrew to her family in Valmar, hoping they might support her through her husband's neglect. Alone in Valmar Indis bore her daughter Faniel. She survived the birth, but the child was desperately small and weak, and Finwë would not leave Fëanáro's side. Only years later, near a hundred years after the rising of the Sun, was Faniel strong enough that Indis dared bring her to Tirion, and her remaining children.”
- The actual story: Míriel was reembodied carrying a child. Should this be possible? No, of course not. Indis supported her through it. Finwë named the child Elmendien for being a wonder; Míriel named her Fëawestë as a spirit of air. Indis came up with Faniel as less likely to attract attention, because it wouldn’t be good for the kid to stay isolated forever.
- Findis:
- See Of the Daughters of Finwë
- Aranel: Means princess/king's daughter. It's possible she was the first one in Aman!
- Has spent most of her life trying to reinvent herself into someone that will suit one purpose or another.
- Sister that Fëanáro will accept! She wasn’t the only one of India’s children to try, but she tried the longest. Did not work.
- Daughter Finwë will actually see! (He doted on her as a child, and still dotes on her in theory. In practice he pays attention to Fëanáro, Nolofinwë when he pushes, and whoever is presenting grandchildren.)
- Perfect Princess: Definitely makes an impression on people, but apparently not on Finwë.
- Noldorin matron: Actually kinda sorta aro, but marries a close friend. Finwë does pay attention to the kid! Not really to her.
- Mother Laurefindel needs! She had him for the wrong reasons and it didn’t work but he certainly doesn’t deserve to suffer for it.
- Daughter Indis needs! Indis needed things from people other than Findis.
- Princess the Noldor need!
- Came back to Tirion after the Exiles left and before Arafinwë came back. Didn’t really want to be Queen, but a little put out that the Valar named Arafinwë king since it’s not like he wanted to either.
- Since literally all Finwë’s grandchildren are gone, have another child to provide hope and a future!
- Got in major fight with Indis over (a) trying to replace those lost and (b) Faniel.
- Findis has Finwë’s coloring.
- Aryontamo Aratatyion, better known by his epessë Lávarwë (‘golden flower’):
- See Of the Daughters of Finwë
- Not mentioned in the Quenta Silmarillion because: It didn’t even mention Findis, so.
- His father Aratatyo can trace a direct patrilineal descent from Tata — and Finwë cannot, whatever people politely pretend to believe. Aratatyo is not at all happy that Finwë is king and he, Aratatyo, is merely a lord. Fortunately for the peace of Aman, Aratatyo is not good at court politics and actively bad at demagogue-ing. He’s quite good at haranguing his children, though, and tries to live out his political ambitions through them.
- Aratatyo's wife Rainaveri is Anairë’s aunt. They separated immediately after all their children were of age.
- Aryontamo (‘heir-smith’) fled into the Aulenduri as soon as he could. He gained his epessë for his skill in fine metalwork, and strongly prefers it.
- (Lávarwë is dark-haired like both his parents, but presumably has Minyarin ancestry somewhere back there.)
- What Lávarwë hoped to get out of marrying Findis is that maybe an apparently politically ambitious marriage would shut his father up for at least a few centuries.
- Glorfindel:
- See Of the Daughters of Finwë
- (I am playing with 'kin to Turgon' and 'line of princes'.)
- His hair was noteworthy enough for a name because both his parents are dark-haired.
- ‘Enortaliën’ is a name of insight. It means, roughly, ‘resurrection’. He’s not fond of it.
- His parents (especially his mother) had him for the wrong reasons. They covered this up well when he was young, but it came out eventually. He wouldn’t call himself estranged, but he did spend a lot of time with Anairë and Nolofinwë’s family after that.
- He names his house in Gondolin after his father.

- Anairë
- TBA
- Idril and Tuor
- It’s ‘Idril and Tuor and Voronwë’, actually. But they don’t generally bring that up.
- Aredhel and Eöl:
- She did like him to start with, and he loved her as much as he loved anyone, for some value of love.
- But he was emotionally abusive and played mind games for fun and wouldn’t let Aredhel leave.
- And then they got married and he got into her head and things got real bad.
- Galvornil
- Not mentioned in the Quenta Silmarillion because: Passive coverup — people who knew she existed just didn’t mention her.
- See Silence.
- She came out of Nan Elmoth with just about the same grotesque misunderstanding of what romantic and family relationships are supposed to be like that Maeglin had. However, since she thought as a woman she was slated for the subordinate role, she wanted nothing to do with it.
- Maeglin in Gondolin:
- Maeglin was generally treated well in Gondolin, but still didn’t feel like he fit in.
- No one realized he had an extremely warped idea of what romance was supposed to be. He turned against Eöl and tried to protect Aredhel, but he still thought their relationship was normal. So: his thoughts about Idril weren’t intended maliciously, but were very genuinely creepy and threatening, and while he didn’t do or say anything Idril picked up on it.
- —And the reason Maeglin and Idril were considered objectively not a good match was that he was too immature for her.
- He broke under torture. (How the hell would any historians know that he didn’t?) Morgoth and company exploited some preexisting fault lines of resentment and envy and jealousy and alienation, and exploited some more to convince him he could have a desirable outcome, but it was in no way of his own free will.
- A stronger or better-understood person might have found the strength to give warning, in his position. But it’s understandable that he didn’t.

Chapter Text
- Reckless is Celegorm. Didn't answer the call because he was defiant. Noted activities: Remembers everything every time he sees Gil-Estel, always a wolf-rider, very concerned about Curufin, mutual antipathy with Leafblight and to a lesser extent Whiterot but by the Third Age generally getting along okay with other orcs-who-know (and has realized he is not actually satisfied with this life). Might have been taken in by Saruman if Tarnish hadn't freaked. Alive after War of Ring.
- Bellow is Turgon. Didn't answer the call because of despair and shame. Noted activities: Goblindolin. Also, looking out for Squint, which is probably going better than it was in their first life. Ruefully buddies with Reckless. Remembers every time he goes in a river or lake. (…It's probably Ulmo.) Missed Varm because he had a flashback and got himself killed. Alive after War of Ring.
- Squint is Maeglin. Didn't answer the call because he was terrified to disobey Melkor. Noted activities: Varm, and he's Khitwê and Risyind's dad. If he remembers life as an elf then he remembers 'bottomless dread' and flips out. Compartmentalizes extensively.
- Whiterot is an original character, Glâneth Elmiel, Thingol's niece and Celeborn's aunt. Didn't answer the call because Angband. Notable activities: Was a long-term prisoner in Angband as an elf and it left a mark — chronic, relentless despair and apathy unless she deliberately compartmentalizes. Was in Varm. Is other original character Laethriel's mother. It wasn't stated but likely remembers when experiences as an orc are reminiscent of experiences in Angband (only not as bad). Alive after War of Ring.
- Straw is an original character, originally named Arphōspindē but she doesn't like that name, an Avari who died in the East during the First Age. Didn't answer the call because her community believed the Valar were out to get them. Notable activities: Varm, Khitwê and Risyind's mom. Compartmentalization champion, taught Squint everything he knows. Often remembers early due to being reminded of unpleasant things witnessed as an elf. (It was not a happy community.)
- Sly is Curufin. Didn't answer the call because he was defiant. Notable activities: He was born as an orc like six times in Angband just so Melkor could watch him remember the Oath and blindly lunge for the Silmarils and laugh at him. Remembers on seeing any Silmaril. Hung out with Reckless until Sauron deliberately isolated him and blocked his memory from returning and set him up to torture Celebrimbor to death, and afterwards let him remember. After this refused to leave the Crucible, no matter how much it hurt. (I'm not sure anyone needs a refresher on him…)
- Leafblight is Nimloth. Didn't answer the call because she was determined to go to Eluréd and Elurín (who when her spirit was captured were alive, well east of Beleriand, and unable to turn back from being swans). Notable activities: Was particularly targeted by the Warden, so tried to lie low/stay alive. Remembered by way of remembering she'd made a horrible mistake. Was taken in by Saruman, but after realizing he was lying got/helped some noncombatants to flee Isengard before they could be drowned as collateral damage. Did not escape herself.
- Screech is an original character, Sharlinnu, from the Avarin realm of Pelndoru. Didn't answer the call because she got confused. Notable activities: Varm. Was unusually sensitive to Music as an elf, as an orc perceives all the interference from Sauron et al as noise. Remembers very early because of the noise. Alive after War of Ring.
- Burn is an original character, Ennar, from a Tatyar Avari community that was kidnapped to help delve Angband. Didn't hear the call because Angband. Notable activities: Varm.
- Tarnish is an original character, Tingail, who was a scholar of language, translator, and city clerk in Ost-in-Edhil. Didn't answer the call because she'd been hiding and was afraid to come out. Notable activities: Varm. Also, pinged Saruman as bad news.
- Deadfall is Oropher (Thranduil's father). Didn't answer the call because he felt like the Valar weren't for him. Notable activities: Takes out his feelings on dwarves and Noldor where possible, but when he came up against wood-elves remembered and self-destructed.
- Louse is Fingon. Didn't answer the call because after failing to snare Fëanor or Fingolfin they really wanted to get him and carefully timed a fake Call to his death in battle. Notable activities: Only born three times. Kept being made a commander. Remembered during Fall of Gondolin and self-destructed. During the War of Wrath led other young orcs into the Sea despite not really properly remembering, and made it to Mandos after that. Reembodied in Aman by now.
- Castout is an original character/textual cold spot, Randeth, Círdan's sister and Voronwë's great-grandmother. Didn't answer the call because Angband. Notable activities: Despite never remembering all the way, went AWOL and jumped into the Ice-Bay of Forochel. Reembodied in Aman by now.
- Stinkweed is Eldalótë (wife of Angrod). Didn't answer the call because she was trying, as a ghost, to buy one more second for the evacuation (of either Dorthonion or Tol Sirion, could be either). Notable activities: Got very lucky and Lúthien broke the chains before she'd even grown up once. Reembodied in Aman by now.
- Shard is Gelmir (Gwindor's brother). Didn't answer the call because he was executed, also heard a fake call, and guessed wrong.
- Killfrost is a textual ghost, Lossī, the father of Elwë, Olwë, and Elmo. Was a prisoner in Utumno. Killed Elmo.
- Yellowing is an original character, Malnalas, one of Nimrodel's ladies. No further information.
- Shackle is an original character, Angsigil, a survivor of Nargothrond and craftsman of Ost-in-Edhil. No further information.
Chapter Text
Pelndoru is an Avari realm on the eastern coast of Middle-earth, also somewhat to the south of where most of the western action is. Its name derives from 'boundary-land', because at the time the realm was founded, they were pretty darn close to the edge of the world. Its people are the Pelnûru, the boundary people.
Terminology:
- (All my Pelnûrlam words are made up by taking an existing word from some form of elvish, particularly this one, and messing around with it.)
- The Pelnûru don't consider 'Avari' to be a meaningful term.
Seriously the majority of them weren't even alive to have an opinion, why should they be called unwilling? Like, they would be unwilling, but they weren't asked! - They call the Eldar "Delnûru" or Journey-Elves.
- "Dannûru" (return-people) are Delnûru who came some part of the way back — Exiled Noldor to start with, but then also anyone who fled Beleriand and remained in Middle-earth.
- "Robnûru" (wild-people) is their term for wood-elves and probably a lot of elves the Eldar would call Avari.
- "Kuynennu" is Cuiviénen.
- "The Involution" is the Changing of the World — or rather, the catastrophic wave that struck Pelndoru as a consequence of the changing of the world.
- More Pelnûru died in the Involution than died in all Melkor/Sauron-associated attacks combined.
Foundationally:
- Being Pelnûru is defined not by ancestry but by assimilation and/or civic participation. They're a mix of Tatyar and Nelyar ancestry; earlier on notable houses might be able to tell you what their approximate mix was, but that's no longer something anyone keeps track of in the Third Age.
- They didn't want to go with the gods, but also didn't want to stick around Kuynennu doing the same old things, and then got fascinated by the edge of the world enough to call themselves after it.
- Up until the Changing of the World, they regularly sailed as close as possible, then sometimes launched rowboats to try to get even closer, to look off the side of the world. This turns the eyes purple and possibly a bit unworldly. (If you do it enough, your kids may inherit the purple part.)
Pelnûru government:
- There are great houses, families afforded great importance, but there are no kings.
- Government is by an Assembly, which chooses an Archon.
- There are multiple kinds of Assembly seats:
- Permanent seats given to certain guilds or great houses.
- Elected seats.
- Sea-seats — any adult citizen not already in the Assembly can get their name drawn and be on the hook for a year's service, like it or not.
- Star-seats — upon consulting Signs and Omens, some people are Chosen to be in the Assembly.
- Which kinds of seats are most influential and how much the Archon is guided day-to-day by the Assembly varies widely over time and between city-states.
Some features of Second Age Pelnûru culture:
- Pelndoru is made up of seven city-states. Three are on islands (Deeptower, Moontower, and Startower on Deepisle, Moonisle, and Starisle); three are right on the coast (Glasstower and two others which currently aren't named), and one a little inland up a river (Orchidtower). They are allied but independent.
- They are allied with the Stonefoot Dwarves.
- They are generally on good terms with their human neighbors to the south, the People of the Pearls.
- They are threatened by a Sauron-founded empire to their north. It calls itself the Black Empire, but the Pelnûru call it the White Empire because the Men inhabiting it are mainly blond and a lot paler than the Men they interact with more often.
- They also have issues with Sauron-influenced Men to their west and sometimes orcs.
- Sometimes things look pretty precarious, especially for inland Orchidtower.
Some features of Third Age Pelnûru culture:
- Orchidtower is the only one of the Seven Cities left and Pelndoru is officially a single realm/state.
- Clothing is made of brightly colored cloth with bright, complex embroidery.
- Traditionally one embroiders one's own clothes, with whatever pattern one likes.
- Gemstones aren't common adornments; they prefer glass or ceramic beads.
- They also wear blown-glass ornaments which aren't tempered or anything, you just have to be really careful not to break them.
- There isn't a standing Pelndoru army, but citizens are trained in bow, polearm, and occasionally sword, and they have an 'invasion preparedness drill' three times a century or so.
- They're mostly doing some weird mental gymnastics where they prepare for possible Sauron-related threats without openly acknowledging that Sauron is a unifying factor. It's out of spite.
- The White Empire is declining hard, and also the Pelnûru call it the Dead Empire now.
- There are still occasional barbarian problems.
- Pelndoru is still allied with the Stonefoots and the People of the Pearls.
The standard Pelnûru explanation of why the Noldor and the Sindar have a feud, which reliably outrages Eldar of any background:
The strife between different groups of Journey-Elves is an old blood feud started over a cursed jewel filled with the perilous light of the gods. Some of the Deep-Elves found it, were driven mad, then lost it. Then some of the Grey-Elves found it and kept it and were driven mad. Because they were all mad, they had a war and slew each other over who should keep the jewel. Because the Deep-Elves had held it longer, they were more mad and turned on their own people. Finally it was sent back to the gods as it always should have been.
The Journey-Elves had never had a war before, so they were very upset, and are still angry and argue about whose fault it was.
The Adjuration is an epic Pelndoru history-song about the invitation of the Valar, the debate of the elves of Kuynennu, and the Sundering, with particular focus on the thoughts and choices of those who would become the first of the Pelnûru. Adjuration Abridged is a comic operetta more-or-less based on The Adjuration.
Adaptations from the original include:
- "Debate of Ingwê and Nurwê" — this version has only a few lines about Light versus Stars before deteriorating into ad hominem attacks
- "Words of Imin" — Imin begins to explain why the elves should stay as they always have been, but then gets distracted listing years and years of petty grievances and ends up demanding everyone get the fuck out of his lake.
- "The Adjuration" — this version of the climactic decision point in the original epic is often referred to instead as "Don't tell me what to do".
Notes:
It is very important to me that everyone know the Pelnûru are exactly as ridiculous as the Noldor and the Sindar and all the canonical elves, they're just doing it differently. Sure they seem sensible but they are pretending Mordor is run by a human emperor out of spite. If Ulmo didn't have maiar playing lifeguard some of them would have jumped off the edge of the world.
