Leo felt his chest tighten as he saw Casey disappear thorough the orange vortex, right where Michelangelo had taken his last breath before dissolving into the smoky air. He surveyed the nightmarish world he had gotten so used to, blood and gore spread along the cracked ground. Bodies littered the ground, a mess of robotic, mutant and human. Leo could no longer see the sky, instead a mass of grey smog covered the earth. He could barely remember the stars and sky.
Not for the first time the feeling of being alone swallowed Leo, making his chest tighten. This time, though, he really was all alone. He misses his brothers, especially Mikey even though Leo had seen him last. Seeing him sacrifice himself was something that he wished he'd never have to see his little brother do. Leo remembers how Raph died, saving the rest of him, and how Leo had let him down, letting Donnie die, and now Mikey. He really fucked up.
The familiar creaking sounds of the Kraang made Leo look away from where Casey had once stood. Weirdly, Leo wasn't scared as he saw the large hoard of robotic monsters march towards him, guns pointed at his chest. A solemn feeling of acceptance washed through Leo as the guns started glowing a faint pink, charging up.
Leo stood up with a hiss of pain, holding his side which had been grazed by a ray from one of the Kraang guns, the blast burning through his shell and opening a gash in his side. Blood soaked into Leo's hand, the red staining his green skin. He opened his belt pouch, fishing for the picture he always held of his family, realizing as he did that he had given it to Casey. Whatever, Leo always figured he was gonna die alone anyways.
"We put up a good fight, guys," Leo muttered into the grey fog above, closing his eyes to imagine what once was a starry sky. He tried to ignore the wetness in the corner of his eyes as he thought of his family, Raph, Donnie, Mikey, Splinter, April, all of them looking down at him from the clouds. "I'm sorry but I can't fight anymore."
Leo winced as he felt the first rays pierce his plastron at his stomach, the shell not doing much to shield him from the pain. Tears ran down his face, either from the pain or the memory of all he had lost, but most likely a mixture of both. He remembered how happy he used to be, fucking around in the sewers with his brothers, their biggest troubles a angry worm and a washed up chef. What he wouldn't give to just be able to just go back.
Leo didn't even register he had fallen to his knees till the bright pink light of the Kraang's gun was directly in front of him of his eyes, pointed at his forehead. His whole body hurt, and he could feel blood dripping from numerous wounds on his body. Fuck, how many times had he been shot? Whatever, Leo didn't care anymore. Through heavy eyes he looked down at the brain like alien that sat in the center of the robotic figure, a small smile on his face. He was finally going to be able to see his family again.
He choked back a sob, clenching his eyes shut as he pictured them all, alive and well. He could basically hear Donnie and Mikey arguing over who got the first slice of pizza in the kitchen Donnie had helped outfit.
"I made it Donnie, claws off."
"Oh, whatever. At least wait for everyone else. Hey, Leo, you gonna eat with us?"
Leo smiled at them, a mixture of happiness and absence washing over him that he couldn't really understand. "Oh, come on. You call yourself my twin and yet you ask me dumb questions like that."
"You're literally the only one who ever calls me your fucking twin."
Leo rolled his eyes, strutting over and throwing an arm around Donnie's shoulders, the familiar feeling off his battle shell making him smile to himself. With a glance towards his self proclaimed twin, he bit into the slice of pepperoni pizza that the soft shelled turtle was holding, chewing with a satisfied smile.
"I know you love it," Leo said, mouth full in a way he knew pissed Donnie off.
"Don't talk with your mouth full," Donnie sighed, pushing Leo's face away, but not denying Leo's statement. They all knew that Donnie was a big softie under the 'bad boy' persona the turtle tried to imitate.
"You know, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Mikey you make the best pizza ever!"
"Hell yeah he does," April cheered as she rushed into the kitchen, Raph and Splinter close behind her, looking starved.
"Aww, thanks guys," Mikey gushed, a warm smile erupting on his face, his eyes sparkling the way they always did when they praised him.
"Purple, stop eating all of the pizza!" Splinter hissed, slapping at Donnie's out reached hand with his long tail.
"Ow! What the hell? Leo stole my other one, pops!"
"Hey, don't curse at your father."
"No need to fight guys, there's more where that came from," Mikey said with a bright smile, perched on top of Raph who was holding two more pizza's on large trays.
"Oh, thank god," April said, mouthful of pizza that made Donnie send her a disgusted look. "I am so hungry."
"Thanks for dinner, Mikey," Raph said, fist bumping the box turtle on his shoulders and shoving a whole slice in his mouth.
Leo stepped back silently, taking it all in. For some reason he felt a pang in his heart that felt like a deep loss. He pushed it away without a second thought, smiling to himself. Leo didn't know why he was feeling so weird, but he knew he was good right now. He had everything he needed, all of his family in one place, smiling and laughing.
"You okay, Leo?" Raph asked, making everyone turn to him with slightly worried looks on their faces.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking about how much I love you guys."
