Chapter 1: China Town AU (Donatello centric)

Chapter Text

Donnie gets separated from his brothers when he’s a baby and gets lost in China town. A man who runs a mystic antique shop finds him and adopts him. He’s raised along side the man’s daughter Cassandra (Casey Jones). Donnie’s supposed to learn the way of the foot but Donnie shows a talent in electronics so his father lets him pursue that while Casey pursued her loyalty to the foot clan.

Donnie was still taught ninjitsu and other foot attack techniques as well for protection.

His father and Casey are both very supportive of him. Donnie also calls Casey by the nickname Cass (only he’s allowed to call her that). Casey’s extremely protective over Donnie and can come off very aggressive but Donnie knows she has a softer side.

Also Casey is four years older then him in this AU.

As for Donnie’s appearance he wears thin square tech glasses and a purple hoodie. Sometimes he’ll wear sneakers but not often.

Donnie has a best friend and since he still hadn’t met April it’s Sunita. They’re childhood best friends and met when Donnie’s father took them to the restaurant where Sunita’s father works. Donnie was 5 and Sunita was 6. They played together and when Donnie’s father and sister came around the place he would always hang out with her.

When the began to get older they would hang out at each other’s houses and play board games or watch movies. They also share the music taste. Broadway musical albums to be specific (Be More Chill, Heathers, etc). They have an extremely close friendship and share a lot of platonic touching (hugs, high fives, holding hands). Which makes a lot of people think they’re dating. He also went with her to prom and danced with her because she didn’t have a date (he didn’t want her to be lonely).

He was surprised when he found out April & Sunita knew each other and quickly discovered Sunita had a bit of a crush on her (This doesn’t happen till further in the AU).

He doesn’t meet the other turtles till the episode Bug Busters. Big Mama’s henchmen stole some mystic item’s from Donnie’s father’s shop and injured him so Donnie went after them. When he enters Big Mama’s office he sees Big Mama cocooning the other turtles and Baron Draxum shows up.

They all turn to him and he awkwardly tries to close the door saying this was bad timing but Gus pulls him back in the room. Donnie confronts Big Mama about what she did and she tries to web him but he dodges.

Draxum attacks Big Mama for the oozesqitous and Donnie tries to get the mystic items back but sees that the other turtles are in danger and he helps them.

They end up fighting Big Mama together and Donnie ends up saving Mikey from Big Mama and flies him to safety with his tech wings. Donnie didn’t get the mystic items back though.

The turtles introduce themselves and Donnie tells him his name before quickly leaving back to his home.

Once he gets home Casey scolds him for leaving alone and says he could’ve got hurt but once she’s done venting her frustration she says she was just worried for him.

Before Shadow of Evil, Casey convinces Donnie to come with her to work. Donnie is hesitant at first but comes with her. He meets the foot Lieutenant and Casey brags about how Donnie’s good with tech which seems to Interest the foot Lieutenant and asks him about an internship. Donnie isn’t sure but he likes that his work is being complimented so he agrees.

He works there for a couple of weeks till they get a new mission to search for a mystic item. Donnie is curious what it is and the Lieutenant says it’s a mystic relic of upmost importance and asks Donnie to use his tech to scan for mystic energy when they get here. Donnie agrees to it and they drive to the location.

Once they get there they search for the mystic signature. Donnie ends up bumping into a new ninja he’d never seen before (April). He makes a funny comment about bumping into her then asks if she was new. She replies in a awkward manor that makes him a bit curious. She mentions that he doesn’t have a foot uniform on and he tells her that he’s an intern.

Casey notices that Donnie is talking to a person she’s never seen before and goes over there. She asks for April’s name and rank.

Donnie tells Casey to calm down and she’s new to the clan.

Casey is extremely protective and a tad suspicious but steps away.

Once she’s walked off Donnie apologizes about Casey saying that she’s really protective.

April asks if Casey’s his girlfriend and Donnie laughs and tells her that Casey’s his big sister. April feels that Donnie doesn’t seem like the other foot clan members. He acts different not so evil. April debates telling him what’s really going along since he seems clueless to what they’re trying to do but she doesn’t tell him just in case she judged him wrong.

The foot Lieutenant comes over to them and tells him to scan for the item and Donnie finds that it was in the clock tower but it’s disappeared.

The foot Lieutenant knows that someone must’ve took it and tells the foot brute to search everyone. Donnie makes it clear that he doesn’t believe that’s right and says he can still track it without having everyone searched.

Meanwhile Randall (Splinter) is about to escape when a giant hippie bus comes through the window followed by a giant bird (also the turtles drive a bus because Donnie wasn’t there to make the turtle tank.

The car looks like the one from the 2012 TMNT series. Not the shellraiser but the one that Casey drives in season 3).

The bus comes close to hitting April and Donnie knocks them both down and away from the danger. April could now tell that Donnie wasn’t like the others and had right and wrong morals.

The turtles get out of the car dazed. Donnie recognized them immediately as the ones that he had helped in Big Mama’s office.
That’s when the foot clan members order Splinter to fight the turtles still not knowing his true identity.

They battle each other while Donnie continues his search for the piece of the dark armor alongside April.

April goes to tell him what’s going on but Casey interrupts the conversation and pulls him away to show him the fight. Splinter defeats them and the foot clan orders him to kill them.

Donnie cuts in and asks what was really going on and why any of this involved murder. The foot Lieutenant mentions he didn’t think about people being unsure about the death of children and tells everybody that anyone in the clan who’s not comfortable with it can leave as long as they don’t tell anyone (or else he’ll dispose of them).

Donnie exclaims that that’s insane but Casey pulls him away and says that this is their shot to be big time in the clan but Donnie shrugs away and says “not like this”.

The turtles take this time to fight off the ninjas.

They try to escape but are confronted by more paper ninjas and a battle breaks out. Splinter finds April and hands her the mystic dark armor piece and tells her to run away with it. She does so and gets to the subway car where Baron Draxum attacks her. Meanwhile Donnie ends up saving Leo from an attack by a paper ninja and destroys it.

Casey then goes after Leo but Donnie blocks her. Casey doesn’t want to fight him but he was in her way of being a great foot member so she fights Donnie to get to Leo. Leo watches the fight for a few moments before going to help Mikey who was pinned down by several foot ninjas.

April gets brought back by Draxum and takes off her ninja mask revealing that she’s an ally of the turtles. Splinter tries to rescue her and it’s revealed he’s Lou Jitsu. Meanwhile Donnie manages to subdue Casey long enough for the turtles, Splinter, & April to escape.

Leo and April feel bad about leaving Donnie behind to face foot clan punishment and April thinks about going back for him but is ushered away back to the lair by Splinter.

Meanwhile Donnie was forced into the judgement of his father who was very disappointed. Not in Donnie but his actions. He explains that this was Casey’s big shot and he ruined it for her.

Donnie takes it hard and goes to his room. Packing up his things and leaving through the window.

And that’s how the episode ends.

The story picks up again in The Purple Jacket where Donnie is wandering from building to building looking for a place to hide out. He’s afraid if he calls Sunita for help the foot will go after her so he’s been all alone the whole time.

He goes into a seemingly abandoned storage facility but it turns out to be The Purple Dragon’s secret lair. They try to trap the intruder but he escapes from every trap and security measure and destroys their tech with his own.

Kendra and her team are impressed by his talents and offers him a place to stay but in-turn he has to help them improve their technology.

Donnie hesitantly accepts their offer and works with them.

After time him and Kendra forge an unlikely friendship but Donnie sometimes feels like she’s pushing him around or using him. She still lures him back in by giving him gifts (one of their jackets and a fancy tech bracelet) or showing fake interest in things he likes.

Donnie does feel his friendship is a lot different then the one he has with Sunita and questions if he really knows what friendship means.

After two months of working together Donnie starts to notice the recent crime sprees. All of which revolve around 3 individuals hacking high tech companies and stealing their technological data and machines.

After tracking the purple dragon’s whereabouts he concludes that they’re the one’s responsible and have been using his own tech knowledge to steal tech from others and sell it to the highest bidders.

Donnie confronts Kendra and she admits then asks him to join. Donnie exclaims that it goes against everything he believes in and he would never.

Kendra just laughs and asks where he would go then. Stating he has no home, no family, and she’s the only friend he’s got. He’s alone in the universe except for her and if he doesn’t join her he’ll be living on the streets until the day he dies. Not a single person caring what happened to him.

Donnie’s left with the void feeling of loneliness yet again.

He’s about to accept Kendra’s deal but her base is suddenly attacked by April and Leo who had tracked down the purple dragons. Kendra goes to deal with it and tells Donnie to stay.

He doesn’t realize it’s the turtles who broke in. He paces there back in forth thinking. He remembers Sunita who was such a good friend then compares it to Kendra. In this revelation he can finally tell that he’s been having a toxic friendship with Kendra. She’s just been manipulating him.

He takes off the jacket she gave him and throws it to the floor. He grabs his tech blueprints, his bo staff and wrist tech before running away from the building.

He runs for a bit before he realizes a drone is following him. He tries to ditch it but fails until he finally makes the conclusion that he must have a tracker on him. The bracelet Kendra gave him. He takes it off and looks at it for a few moments before throwing it the trash.

“She isn’t my friend. She never was. I have to accept that.” Donnie tells himself as he walks down the street. Then the episode ends.

Afterwards Donnie and Mikey meet again after Donnie helps him fight a mutant.

Mikey asks him what he’s doing in the streets and Donnie says it’s personal. Mikey then offers him a home at the lair. Donnie is hesitant at first but he’s tired of sleeping in the rain so he agrees.

He was pretty creeped out when they entered the sewers though. Splinter is hesitant on letting Donnie stay but let’s him since he helped them with the foot. They give Donnie one of the unused rooms and he stays there.

Raph tells the other brothers that they should be as welcoming as possible so Donnie can get used to his new surroundings. Donnie feels a bit uncomfortable around Raph since he’s so large and spiky but tries not to show it.

He feels most comfortable around Leo. Leo can be pretty annoying sometimes but he can tell if his teasing is going too far and he stops.

As for Mikey he’s put off by his talkative and excitable behavior but he doesn’t seem threatening. He does admire how Mikey seems to put a positive spin of everything and manages to cheer everyone up.

Donnie becomes close with April after meeting her for the second time.

Sometime after this Kendra comes back into play. Telling Donnie he owed her since he got her friends Jase and Jeremy locked up. Apparently they took blame for her and she wasn’t questioned any further.

Donnie feels bad for what happened to them since Kendra guilt trips him. He agrees to owe her one favor as long as it wasn’t too grand of one.

She leaves saying that she’ll call him when his favor is due.

Donnie continues helping the turtles out but doesn’t join them in battles very often. Everything seems to be going well for quite a bit of long time until Kendra calls.

He meets up with her and she tells him she plans to steal cargo from a mystic train. Donnie is against it but Kendra guilt trips him again. He begrudgingly agrees and they plan their heist.

Once aboard the train Donnie guards the door while Kendra steals the object.

After a clean escape Donnie asks Kendra what she wanted to steal.

She refuses to tell him and says to him to call her if he ever wants to make a business deal before activating a pair of robotic dragon wings on her back and flying off.

This is the last Donnie would hear of Kendra for quite while.

In the episode Purple Game Kendra returns. She creates a game using the object she stole from the train. Once activated the game possesses people into doing her bidding. Once Donnie opens the game he’s possessed and Kendra makes him control the mech.

He later discovers April is friends with Sunita. Donnie and Sunita then have a huge arguement since he’d been missing for 6 months and she was afraid he was dead.

Fanfic bit (disaster twins):

Donnie adjusts his hoodie as he walks atop the rooftops of New York with Leo. The cold wind blows around their ears.
C’mon, Donnie. You’ve already shown that you can fight why don’t you just help me with patrol, already?” Leo says poking at Donnie’s jacket sleeve.

“I came to keep an eye on you but I won’t fight.” Donnie replies.

“Are you too scared?”

Donnie turns and glares. “I’m already coming don’t push your luck.”

Leo sighs and rolls his eyes. “You have no sense of humor.”

As they step onto another roof a loud crash can be heard coming from a building on the left.

Leo’s head shoots towards it. “Yes! Crime.”

“What?”

“Uh...I didn’t mean it like that!” Leo blushes embarrassed. “I just mean that it’s a good thing because we can stop it.”
“You can stop it. I brought a book.” Donnie says pulling out a thick binded book from his jacket pocket.

“Really?” Leo frowns. “You’re not even going to help?”

“I already told you that I don’t approve of all of you fighting crime. You could get squashed by villains yet you still don’t listen even though you barely know how to fight.”

“Fine. If you don’t want to help others, I’ll do it on my own.” With that Leo jumps down from the roof and slides down a garbage can. He follows the crashing noise and Donnie turns away looking down at his book.

“He’ll be fine.” Donnie whispers trying to reassure himself.

Donnie sits on the side of the building and looks down at his book.

Five minutes pass before Donnie hears a loud shrieking noise that sounds awfully like Leo.

Donnie shoots up from where he’s sitting and runs towards the direction where Leo went.
“He better of not got himself killed!”

As Donnie turns the corner he spots a large bug-like mutant dragging the seemingly unconscious Leo on the ground.

“Let him go!” Donnie yells his heart pounding from the sudden spike of adrenaline in his body.

The mutant turns and hisses.

“You heard me! Drop him!” Donnie pulls out his tech bo staff from the shoulder strap over his shell.

The bug mutant throws Leo aside and charges at Donnie who quickly dodges and the creature bangs into the iron stairs of the building.

It shakes his head before turning back to Donnie maliciously.

Donnie stands in front of Leo protectively. “Stay away! I’m warning you!” Donnie growls trying to keep his voice steady.
The mutant charges once again and Donnie quickly pulls a small lever on his staff and it turns into a large hammer.

He slams it into the mutant and it’s thrown back. It stumbles dazed before running off down the alleyway.

“Uhgh...” A small groan can be heard from Leo.

“Leo!” Donnie cries and gently shakes him. “Hey, wake up!”

“Ugh....I’m awake...I’m awake.” Leo opens his eyes as they focus onto Donnie’s concerned facial features.

Donnie let’s out a relieved sigh. “You scared me you jerk!” Donnie snaps shoving him.

“Ow!” Leo sits up holding his head. “What happened?”

“You got trounced by a mutant just like I warned you about!”

“Then where is it?”

“I ran it off but you could’ve been killed!” Donnie snarls.

“Why are you so angry?” Leo growls.

“Angry? Angry? I’m not angry!” Donnie shouts. “You don’t understand what I’m going through! I lost my real family after what happened and now that I’ve been hanging out with you and your brothers. I was finally starting to feel like I had someone again!” Tears roll down his cheeks. “If you guys keep going out and fighting random mutants in the street you’re going to get yourselves killed! You’re the closest thing I have to a family now. I can’t lose you guys.”

There’s a pause of silence before Leo speaks up.

“Donnie, I-I’m sorry. I didn’t think about you feeling like that. I just want to help clear up the streets and make it a safer place.” Leo looks down.

Donnie swallows. “I know you want to help but you can’t do it like this. You need combat training.
“Where am I gonna get someone to help me with that?”

Donnie sighs and stands up. He offers a hand to Leo. “I’ll help you but you have to promise not to run head on into crazy dangerous situations without a plan.”

A small smile crosses Leo’s face and he takes Donnie’s hand. “I promise.”
