Work Text:
“You know,” Aziraphale murmured, tucking Crowley tighter into his chest, “this whole sleeping business of yours?”
“Yeah?” Obligingly, Crowley snuggled closer in. “What about it?”
“Well.” Aziraphale paused. “I was just thinking that there may be something to it after all.”
“Mmhmm.” The fingers of one hand found their way through the bedding and into Aziraphale’s hair, moving with deft gentleness through the curls and along the scalp. “Been telling you that for ages, haven’t I? Knew you were bound to like it, if you’d only give it a try.”
“I suppose you have been,” Aziraphale acknowledged. “Perhaps I should have listened sooner. You were certainly right about me liking it.”
“‘Course I was. ‘M always right.”
Aziraphale snorted (lightly enough to be sure he wasn’t risking disturbing the moment), considered, and decided to let that patent untruth go past unchallenged. For the moment, anyway.
“Although,” he mused out loud rather than yielding to the temptation of argument, “I somehow doubt I would have liked it quite so much if I’d tried it before now.”
“Why not?”
“If I had tried it alone, that is,” Aziraphale clarified. “If you weren’t there.”
“Ahh.” Crowley’s soft outtake of breath was a warm, fluttering gust on Aziraphale’s skin.
“It seems like the sort of thing that would be much more worthwhile when done with a partner,” Aziraphale concluded. “That’s all.”
“Mmmmmm.” Crowley didn’t try saying anything more in words, just traced a thumb along Aziraphale’s forehead and pressed his own cheek into the angel’s shoulder: tacit, tangible agreement.
Aziraphale let his eyes fall shut against the dim lighting in the room — the better to appreciate the sensation of hands in his hair, a demon in his arms, and layers of blankets and contentment wrapped securely around them both.
It had not escaped his notice (nor, he strongly suspected, had it escaped Crowley’s) that, in fact, Aziraphale had yet to actually try sleeping. He’d get around to that part soon enough — temporarily letting go of consciousness, allowing his mind to drift — and see what that was like. If only because he’d promised Crowley that he would, and Aziraphale had no intention of breaking his word.
Soon enough. But not yet.
In the meanwhile, lying together in the wonderful warmth and closeness that could apparently be a precursor to sleep, there was far too much right here in the waking world for him to enjoy.
