Derek’s hands tighten on the steering wheel.
“You couldn’t take the shot,” he says, matter-of-factly. There’s a surprising lack of judgment in his tone but the words sound damning all the same. “She was going to hurt you. Keep hurting everyone,” Derek sneers. “It was the only option we had. We needed to buy ourselves time.” Destroy evidence, goes unsaid. “We needed... What was your plan?”

Allison believed she could finally take Kate down. She'd had a gun, some training, and knew exactly where to find her. All Allison needed to do was take the shot.
But she couldn't finish Kate off.
In the end it was her and Derek and the smell of gasoline, a pyre so high it stretched above the trees, and Kate screaming from inside the house.
