Work Text:

The more one would look at Dazai and Fyodor, the more the lines that set them apart start to blur.

And right now, Kunikida was seeing those lines being smudged and erased, overlaping one another.

As Fyodor stood, in the centre of the office, eyes set on the one and only Dazai, Kunikida couldn't help but notice how similar they looked.

With dark hair and a pale complextion. Eyes either looking bright and alive or dark and soulless.

There was never an in between for Dazai and Kunikida would assume that the same applied to Fyodor.

And right now, both of them, had those dark eyes, filled with something Kunikida could only describe as mutual hate.

But "hate" wasn't the right word.

There was something even more to it.

"What are you doing here?" Dazai spat, while getting up from his desk, he sounded between a mixture of bored and annoyed.

Fyodor's expression looked to be about the same, however, he looked as though he was expecting that reaction.

"Nice to see you too." Came a sarcastic reply.

Atsushi was frozen in his seat.

Yosano was next to Ranpo, and the doctor looked too afraid to even breath.

Kyoka and the tanizaki siblings were out with kenji on a case. They would be safe at least.

Dazai rolled his eyes and walked over to Fyodor.
"I seriously thought I had it." He sounded bitter, but his face was completely unreadable.

Fyodor practically mirrored the expression.
"My dear, do you think it's that easy to kill me?" His voice was smooth, rolling off his tongue with a thick Russian accent.

Dazai scanned Fyodor for a moment, before letting a small smile creep onto his face.

"No." He replied after a moment. "But I suppose that's what makes you such a great opponent."

Kunikida's breath was stuck in his throat.

No one else dared to make a move.

"Likewise." Fyodor's expression turned into something more gentle.

"Ah, too bad I have to arrest you." Dazai faked a sympathetic tone, before quickly grabbing Fyodor's wrists and pining his arms behind his back.

"Now now, I've won this one."

Fyodor didn't seem surprised.
"It seems you have."

______________

They managed to get Fyodor seated down on the couch while Dazai ensured he didn't let go of him.

"Hm, isn't this a bit too much? After all, I'm simply visiting as your-"

Dazai cut him off.
"It's always better to be safe than sorry."

Fyodor smirked.
"Oh? Do you not trust me? I am your-"

"My. Enemy."
Dazai siad sternly.

Fyodor didn't give up.

"Enemy you say? My sweet melancholy. Are you still pretending to be all good? You know that you're not."

Dazai was good. Well, he was morally good. Weather he was a good coworker was a different thing. But Kunikida doubt that was what Fyodor was taking about.

The grip on Fyodor's shoulder tightened.

"You're evil." Dazai hissed.

"Of course, whatever you want to say. But you are sleeping with-"

Fyodor was abruptly cut off by Dazai hand wrapping over his mouth.

Dazai had frantically moved fowrad and practically crawled onto the Fyodor to get him to stay shut.

"Could you be quite for one second?"

Funny. You usually used to tell me to be louder.
Was what Fyodor would have said if his mouth wasn't covered by Dazai's hand.

Sweet melancholy?
What?

Kunikida shook the thought away.

"What do you wnat from us?"

Fyodor rolled his eyes and Dazai reluctantly removed his hand.

"I'm only here to pay your coworker a visit. But I'm being treated like some terrorist."
Came another sarcastical reply.

"Yeah. Wanna guess why?"
Dazai said annoyed, while crossing his arms.
Fyodor clearly wasn't going to kill anyone today however.

Kunikida was slightly horrified.
The similarities between the two were practically screaming at him.

Their mannerisms and how they spoke.

"Dazai, how long are you going to keep this a secret."

Dazai could feel everyone's eyes on his back.

"Everyone has secrets. What wrong with that?"

"Not secrets as dark as yours." Fyodor tilted his head to the side hair brushing his cheeks and Dazai mimicked his movements.

Their way of communication was so bizarre.
They seemed to be having whole conversations just by looking at each other.

"Fine." Dazai eventually said.

He turned around to everyone else.
"Fyodor here, is married."

They blinked at him, confused and understandably so.

"What?" It was Atsushi.

Dazai hummed. "Yes. he's married."

"Is he inviting you to the wedding or something? Or is this something we should celebrate?"

"What?" It was Fyodor.

"What?" Asked Dazai.

"Seriously Dazai?"

Dazai frowned.
"I told them."

"That's not what I meant. And you know it."

"So he's not married? Oh okay." Kunikida breathed a sigh of relief. "For a second I really thought he was someones husband-"

"I'm Dazai's husband."

Dazai didn't try to correct the man, though he did make a face of disgust.

Kunikida blinked then all eyes turned to Ranpo.
It was one thing for Dazai to say such things. But for Fyodor Dostovesky to say it, was unbelievable.

"They are." Ranpo said after a moment.
"They are married."

Kunikida broke his pen.

"Dazai my dear, would you care to tell me the date?" Fyodor said in a such a sweet tone Atsushi thought he might vomit.

"Why does that matter?" Dazai crossed his arms and refused to look at his so called "husband"

Fyodor didn't get up for the couch. Though it was merely so everyone else felt a fake sense of safety.

"You just attacked my reputation! How is this a good anniversary idea?" Dazai snapped.

Fyodor's face was stoic.
"I didn't mean to."

"I find that hard to believe."

"Okay, I did mean to. But for a good reason."

"Explain. What is going on? You are married to a terrorist that we've been trying to catch?" Yosano questioned.

"Oh yeah! I would have told you where he was, but in all honesty I hadn't a clue where he was hiding. It was only until yesterday I got word he was hiding underground."
Dazai shrugged.
"We have him here now though." Dazai pointed at Fyodor who was still on the couch.

"If you are his husband, why didn't you tell us?"
Kunikida asked.

"Why didn't I tell you?"
Dazai seemed to be going back to the normal Dazai that Kunikida knew.

"I forgot." He said with a grin of his face.

Kunikida screamed with frustration and reached out for Dazai's neck.
This squandering waste of-!

A hand grabbed his arm and Dazai manged to escape his grasp and ran behind Fyodor.

Everyone was tense.
Fyodor didn't have his ability activated.
And Kunikida did not die

But he swore he saw the stars align and the sky open up the moment he figured out who's hand it was on his arm.

Kunikida quickly broke away from the Russians grip.

"Hm. Thanks Fedya."

Kunikida was slightly shaken to say to least.

Where those two really married?

They were so different.
One was evil.
One was good.

Well, Dazai wasn't entirely pure good. No one was. Kunikida would need to remind himself that.
But he was way better morally when compared to Fyodor.

That man's moral compass was pointing south.
Yet, Fyodor had the decency to stop him before he strangled Dazai.

But Dazai didn't even know where his own husband was for the past year.

And he seemed perfectly happy.
Anyone else would have been deranged by now.
Not knowing where this significant other was for so long.

And yet, Dazai didn't bother even looking for him.

It was so messed up. Kunikida couldn't really wrap his head around it. A married couple was supposed to stay by one another's side and never leave.

What they were doing was the complete opposite.

"That doesn't explain why he's here." Yosano said.

"So he's your husband. Sure."
She sounded uncertain.
"Then why did he come here?"

"Dazai, would you be a doll and take out the item in my pocket?"

Dazai frowned at being called a doll.
"Jeez. Stop being so flirty." But he reached into Fyodor's coat pocket anyways.

Kunikida didn't hear Fyodor say which pocket. But Dazai knew the exact one to reach into.

Dazai was half expecting to end up taking out a condom, but instead, he took out two flight tickets.

He eyed Fyodor, waving them in the air while he placed his free hand on his hips.

Fyodor gave a small, sly smile.

"Happy anniversary."

Dazai smiled. "You're sick. Really sick."
Then, he added on a different note.
"Where's it to?" He said while reading the tickets.

"Russia. Its not too cold there right now, but it is still snowing. Plus you said you wanted to play with the snow."

"No, I said I wanted to chuck snowballs into your face."

"Same thing."

"Dazai-San, why are you married to him?"

"Eh? Atsushi kun what kind of question is that?"

Kunikida felt himslef agreeing with Atsushi's question.

"It's because I love him."

If Kunikida had another pen with him, he would have broken it.
He would have actually broken ten pens by now at least.

"I find that hard to believe." Atsushi muttered under his breath.

"He's a terrorist." Kunikida protested.

"Yes yes, vile and cruel and merciless." Dazai rolled his eyes and continued to read the tickets.
First class.
All the way to Russia. Oh, the amount of snowballs he would would throw at Fyodor would be enough to make him want a divorce.

Kunikida shook his head.
Dazai wasn't evil. He was on the good side, the side that helped others. Not on the side of some criminal.

Yet, as Kunikida told himslef that, he couldn't find it in himself to believe it.

He was sure Dazai was on their side.
Never once did he ever doubt that Dazai was a good man.
He was good at heart.

He had been ever since the first day they met.

"How long have you guys been married?" Yosano asked, while crossing her arms over her chest.

The pair in question exchanged glances before Fyodor answered. "Four years."

Kunikida couldn't believe such an eccentric pair like this lasted for four years.

Granted, they probably didn't even live together.

Fyodor Dostovesky was an evil man.
He had killed and he had hurt hundreds if not thousands of people.

But what Kunikida failed to see, was that Fyodor did it all in order to obtain an ideal world.

If Kunikida had known that, then maybe he would have understood slightly.

And Dazai too, had hurt and kill hundreds of people. But he changed his heart and went and did good.
He joined the side of angels, but he was not one of them.

Fyodor was a fallen angel, whose beliefs did not change even if he was in hell.
He still did what he had to in order to obtain the world he saw.
In order to make it a reality.

Both were seeking righteousness.
Dazai, in himself.
Fyodor, in the world.

Both were on the side of angels.
One was a Demon learning to fly.
The other was a fallen angel trapped in hell.

Yet, both of them, in their own twisted way, were both good. But both of them, in that same way, were both drenched from head to toe in the blood of others.

There was never really a proper definition for good and evil. The world is hardly ever so simple. It was never so black and white.

But instead, filled with hundreds of shades of different colours.

That was why they saw something different in the other.

That was why Dazai seemed to fall in love with Fyodor.

That was why Fyodor seemed to fall in love with Dazai.

They both understood the world and the way it worked.

And they would endure the rest of thier lives with others hand in theirs.

They complemented each other.
Dazai was the sorrow and grief that Fyodor failed time and time again to feel.
And Dazai felt the pensiveness, seemingly without a real cause.

While Fyodor was Dazai's eyes to help see through the illusion of good and evil. To let him know that he was not a monster. That he could change if he wanted.
Fyodor broke the glass lense Dazai saw the world through and opened his eyes up to the truth that Dazai was too afraid to confront by himself.

In a sense, Dazai was Fyodor's sweet melancholy, the emotions he had been chasing to feel. While Fyodor was Dazai's realisation of the broken issusion of good and evil, the truth he was too afraid to face on his own.

Kunikida of course, didn't see this.
All he saw was his nuisance of a coworker, and a terrorist he had been trying to catch. And those two, just happened to be married.

The world was never so simple.
It was cruel and unjust, and yet, beautiful gems still managed to form under harsh conditions.

In the eye of hurricane, there will be silence.

Good would be nothing without evil.
Evil would be nothing without good.

Those two where meant to mix and work together in a complicated blend of what one would call life, they were not meant to be used to compare one with the other.

Like how Kunikida did when he saw the two.
But, was there really any harm in believing that the wolrd was created like that? To think that there was a bold and fixed line that would separate good and evil? You could only be on one of the two sides? However, he failed miserably at assigning a side that Dazai belonged to.

But maybe there wasn't any harm in thinking like so. There were no consequences if one were to think like that.
But it was sure a waste to fall for that old lie again.

Thus, the pair had each other, to know about the sweet melancholy that came with breaking the illusion of good and evil.
