The Problem

Summary:

Prompt “Closeness” for TodoMomo Week 2022.

Shouto just wants to spend time with his girlfriend….studying. He didn’t say studying what.

Notes:

Many thanks to The Black Rose, for encouraging me, not only to write but to share what I managed to coax out of my writer’s block.

Work Text:

Momo leaned her elbow on the table. Propping her forehead against her fingertips, she tried a second time to read the paragraph on the page.

A chill brushed against the back of Momo’s neck. “Ahh-mmm…” she gasped, clearing her throat to cover for the reaction.

The book resting open before her was perhaps the driest reading UA expected its students to contend with. And her study partner didn't make focusing any easier.

Todoroki puffed another frosty breath against the back of her neck, sending a shiver down Momo’s spine.

Licking her lips, Momo restarted the first sentence on the current problem again. 'Cross-boundary jurisdiction becomes an issue when–' Shouto’s presence leaned closer. The hair on the back of Momo’s neck rose in anticipation. '...the rescue hero team has prepared–'

“You’re doing that on purpose,” she finally sighed as Shouto sent another wave of gooseflesh down her back.

“Doing what?” He rumbled, a chilly breath tickling her left ear.

“Distracting me,” Momo said, forcing herself to keep her eyes on the page. '...jurisdiction becomes an issue when a natural disaster or villain attack–'

Shouto leaned his left arm on the table, and into Momo’s peripheral vision. “How am I distracting you?” he asked, right hand brushing lightly at the end of her ponytail. The tips of his fingers trailing cool patterns down her back.

“S-seriously?” Momo asked, sitting up straight and spreading her hands on the table. “In case you’ve forgotten, you’re supposed to be reading this next problem,” she reminded her boyfriend.

“I read it,” he sighed, icy fingers continuing their slow, distracting exploration of her back.

Momo couldn’t help herself. Her head lifted, eyes seeking Shouto’s face. Heterochromic eyes followed the line of his fingers, inching at a glacial pace down her spine. The right side of his mouth lifted in a bored, if boyish, smile.

“A-and?” she stuttered to ask, heart fluttering to be so close to him. Only an ingrained dedication to study and excellence kept Momo from shoving the book aside, and thoroughly kissing her boyfriend. Her fingers itched to run through Shouto’s two toned hair, knowing full well how soft those strands were.

“Aannd…” he drew the word out, his index finger trailing ever closer to the waist of her jeans. “It’s a no-win situation. There’s no right answer for it, so it’s just in the book to slow us down.”

Shouto’s eyes lifted from her lower back, that piercing gaze taking Momo’s breath away. “Are…you sure?” she asked once she could draw breath again.

“Yeah,” the fire and ice hero replied confidently. His hand spread out against the warmth of her lower back.

Momo sat a little straighter, her attention shifting away from the coolness of Shouto’s hand. “But… Why, how do you know?” she pointed at the problem in the book.

Her boyfriend shrugged. “You should read it—”

“I’ve been trying for the past five minutes,” she interjected flatly.

“…and decide for yourself. Unsolvable. That’s my take,” Shouto’s index finger slipped under the hem of her shirt.

Momo twisted towards him, only to have Shouto lean in close to her ear. “And I’m right,” he whispered. The chill of his breath, and the heat his proximity produced inside Momo, created a tornado inside her.

Trembling, Momo pulled in a ragged breath. “Stop that. I can’t concentrate…”

Shouto dropped his head against the upturned palm of his left hand. “You doubt my analysis?” A second finger had found its way beneath her shirt, sending an electric chill thrilling through her skin.

“N-no!” she blinked, his entire hand now traveling up her back towards the clasp of her bra. “But…”

“If you accept it, we could write up the response,” Shouto suggested, those distracting digits making Momo’s heart race. “And go do…. other things,” he finished with a smile.

Momo lost herself for a moment. Body wanting to shift of its own accord, to close the distance and seize Shouto’s lips in a kiss she hoped would distract him for a change. ‘How can they include a question without a solution?’ She turned back to the book.

“But there has to be an answer!” she exclaimed, unable to block out the distraction that was Shouto’s fingers. “Doesn’t there?” Momo asked, her attention shifting back to her boyfriend, who was staring at her with a smouldering look.

The intensity of Shouto’s eyes increased, his mouth quirked up in a suggestive smile.

“Wh-what kind of… other things?” she shivered out.

Shouto opened his mouth, leaning towards her face. Momo’s attention dropped to Todoroki’s lips as they inched closer to hers. She sat up against his hand. “No. No.” she shook her head.

“W-we have work to do.” Momo cleared her throat, reluctantly returning her focus to the book of problems.

“Are you sure?” Shouto shushed into her ear.

“Yes!” she asserted, straightening the book in front of her and looking at the problem. “We have to be sure we get this right. It’s important.”

“Does it matter?” Shouto asked, the fingers of his right hand gently rubbing at the skin beneath her bra, in an exceedingly pleasant way.

“Y-yes, of… of course it matters,” she said determinedly, whispering the words of the question to help herself focus. 'Cross-boundary jurisdiction becomes an–'

Shouto’s thumb, and forefinger played at the first clasp. “We don’t even turn this homework in. It’s just for practice…”

'...becomes an issue when–' The first of the three clasps gave. Momo gasped softly. “Yes,” she stressed the word with long suffering patience. “And if we don’t get it right in practice, we won’t get it right on the exam.”

“We still have time before the exam,” Shouto purred against her ear. He was sending heat and electricity coursing through her veins in tidal waves.

Momo twisted on the bench seat they shared, sliding back a couple of inches so she could properly see Shouto’s face. “But! Wait, so there is an answer?” she asked, studying his expression. Those fine masculine lips pulled at a tiny frown, his eyes pinning her where she sat.

“Who knows?” Todoroki ultimately shrugged, his free hand sliding the book across the table. “I just want to spend time with you.”

His hand, still trapped beneath her bra, pressed against the warmth of Momo’s back, encouraging her closer. She sucked in a breath, biting her lower lip. Looking across the table where the book of problems now rested, Momo’s right hand reached for it.

‘I should really finish that problem… there’s got to be an answer, and I just know if it’s difficult, it’ll be on the exam.’

Shouto’s warmer left hand caught Momo’s wrist before her fingers could brush against the book. “Plenty of time to study later,” he cajoled, voice and eyes so hot Momo felt her insides turn to jelly.

“I… suppose…” she mused, watching Shouto through her lashes and seeing his eyes widen. “I could be convinced to spend a little time studying something else…”

Momo’s lips curved up in a smile. One she knew her boyfriend liked. “Now that I’ve solved it,” she told him triumphantly. Free hand reaching for those soft strands at the back of Shouto’s neck, Momo pulled his lips down to hers.
