Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

Summary:

What happens when you put magic, pranks and two pining bestfriends together on the wackiest day of the year? Mayhem of course - and maybe a little but of love.

Work Text:

The Gryffindor finishes his incantation on his sleeping roommate, watching the bright blue light envelop his friend before it vanishes completely, leaving no trace of a spell ever being cast. He smirked, hurrying back to his bed and drawing the curtains,

He pulled out the mirror from his pocket where a familiar face and an almost identical room, save for the red and gold being replaced by green and silver, could be seen.

"You're insane." The Slytherin said in a harsh whisper. "And you're going to get us both hexed."

"It doesn't matter. Did you do it?" The Gryffindor asked eagerly, peeking out of his drawn curtains to make sure that everyone in their dorm was still fast asleep.

"Unfortunately." The man at the other end replied with an exasperated tone.

"I knew you trusted me."

"This better work."

"Oh, you'll be very surprised." The mischievous glint in the Gryffindor's eyes was unmistakable. "They won't know what hit them."

---

War woke up later than he usually did, it was april 1st and the castle took precautions on this particular day, hence classes for all years were cancelled. They do not want a repeat of the exploding cauldron on his 4th year or the backfiring wands on their 3rd.

He sluggishly makes his way out of bed, slowly making his way around their room and noting the glaring lack of his roommate's presence.

"Leave it to him to wake up early today." The Gryffindor dress in casual clothes, feeling rather warm despite the chilly season.

"That's odd." But he shakes it off to their dorm having bad ventilation and heads down to grab a quick breakfast in the Great Hall.

---

"You're up early today." War remarks as soon as he sits in front of his roommate who only gives him a sly look.

"It's an interesting day."

Just as he said that, there was a loud bang from the teachers table, catching the attention of everyone in the hall.

"I'd say." War said as he hid a chuckle at the sight of the headmaster covered in porridge. "Someone started early."

"I wanted to get him this year too but I was too busy." Nadol replied with an easy wave but War raised a brow.

"Busy with what?"

"Oh you know. Just busy with stuff."

War was about to ask more questions when his roommate suddenly perks up upon seeing something behind him.

"Look, your boyfriend is here."

He rolls his eyes, resisting the urge to correct his playful roommate, before turning to look at the approaching Slytherin.

"Planning to prank me so early Anan?"

Yin laughs, sliding on the seat next to him, automatically filling War's plate with food before filling his own.

"I'm just here to feed you."

The Gryffindor sticks out a tongue but accepts his plate, belatedly noting that it was made up of his favorites only.

"I'm not a kid."

"Sure you aren't." Yin slips a toast on his open mouth before he could complain, effectively shutting him up as he chews on the bread harshly. "I just like annoying you every morning."

"Ah yes, to have a bestfriend that will come to my house table every morning to do nothing but make me a breakfast plate." Nadol's dramatic exclamation startles the two who jump apart when the other Gryffindor gives them a teasing wink.

"You really shouldn't be getting on my nerves today." War challenged. "Or have you forgotten about waking up in the Slytherin common room last year."

"That was scary."

"It was funny." Yin and War bump their fists as they laugh. "Disturbed the whole house but your reaction was priceless."

"That probably went down as one of the best pranks in Gryffindor."

War unconsciously leaned his head on Yin's shoulder as they shared another round of laughter.

"Yes, yes getting pranked by the power couple was fun."

Yin chokes on his drink and War worriedly thumps the Slytherin's back as Nadol cackles in front of them.

"You're both hopeless. Everybody knows you're practically married at this point."

It was War's turn to flush as he glares at his roommate who seemed unaffected.

"No we're not." War winces when he feels his pants getting warm. "We're just friends."

And warmer.

"Good friends."

And warmer.

His eyes widen as he slowly looks at his roommate who had a shit-eating grin on his face.

"Yes, what he said." Yin replied once he got himself together before turning to War with a bewildered look on his face. "Is it getting warm here or is that just me?"

"Must be the weather." War replied, gritting his teeth as he felt his pants get impossibly warmer.

"Right, maybe. It's weird though."

Yin let it go and continued to eat his food as War gave Nadol a hard kick under the table.

"I'm going to kill you." War whispered when Yin was distracted by Prom joining them.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Is everything okay?" Yin asks when he realizes that the two Gryffindors were engaged in a staring contest. He smoothens the crease in War's brow with a finger and turns the Gryffindor's head to face him. "No fighting in front of the food, whatever Nadol did, deal with it later."

"Fine. But I will hex him into next year and you can't stop me."

"Ooh scary." Nadol teased, earning him another kick from his roommate. "Stop kicking me. I can't believe Yin thinks you're cute."

The said Slytherin clears his throat loudly, glaring at Nadol who immediately zipped his mouth. "Honestly, he's more like an angry kitten."

"You want to get hexed next?" War challenged with crossed arms.

"It's true. You look like an angry kitten when you're mad."

"Anan I'm warning you~"

"Fine fine you angry lion cub." Yin ruffled War's hair with a smirk. "You're very scary. Here."

Yin hands him a goblet of his favorite drink and War's glare is immediately replaced with a happy smile as he sips on the chocolate goodness. The Gryffindor spots the Slytherin's playful smile and pouts.

"I hate you."

"Already told you that you were more like a kitten."

"You just know my weakness."

"That's a compliment."

War glares further but surrenders, ignoring everyone else as he happily continues on drinking his milk. Yin shakes his head fondly and goes back to his meal, looking at War from time to time as they talk in hushed whispers.

"Have they forgotten that we're here?" Prom asked as he looked at his friends who were in a bubble of their own.

"They always do, you should be used to it by now."

"I don't know if I want your plan to work."

"Why?"

"Because I can't imagine what they'll be like when they're actually together."

---

As soon as they finish their breakfast, War bids the Slytherins a hasty goodbye, promising to meet them at the lake in an hour. He drags his roommate to the Gryffindor tower and locks the door once they are safely inside their dorms.

"What the hell were you thinking?" He asks harshly, irritation growing when his roommate pays him no mind. "Bonnadol!"

"Just a bit of a prank that's all." Said man replies casually. "You shouldn't be too worried, it's not like you have anything to hide."

"I thought you told me that spell was under revision?"

"It was until a few days ago when I got a little help."

War snorts as he settles on his bed, eyes glaring at his unbothered roommate. "And who helped you?"

"Big guy at the Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. I only had to plead my case and the spell was complete."

"And exactly what did you tell Mister Weasley?"

"That I have to finish it to get two idiots to admit that they love each other. He thought it was hilarious and offered his help immediately."

War groans, letting his body fall back on the bed and then kicking his feet up in the air in indignation.

"Please tell me this will only last a day."

"I'm not sure. We didn't really get into specifics."

"Nadol." The Gryffindor warned with a sharp voice.

"It's easy, if you don't want your pants to feel like it's on fire. Don't lie." Bonnadol shrugs but the twinkle in his eyes betrays his intentions.

"Yeah. Easy."

"If only you weren't hiding your very obvious feelings for your bestfriend." The other Gryffindor whistles nonchalantly, dodging a pillow that came flying his way.

"I am no-" War could already feel his pants getting warmer and he curses again. "I will get you back someday."

"I'm sure you will but I think you'll find this day very interesting."

"Just drug me with veritaserum, that would be less embarrassing."

----

On their way to the lake, Yin sensed that his companion was deep in thought, seemingly distracted by something on his mind.

"A galleon for your thoughts?"

The Gryffindor startled, making Yin laugh fondly as War tried to collect himself.

"Don't scare people Anan."

"I wasn't, you were just too busy thinking about something."

War hums absentmindedly, welcoming the familiar warmth of Yin's arm wrapping around his shoulder and unconsciously slipping closer to the Slytherin's scent.

"Just this day, it gets on your head."

"Gryffindor's prankster is winded by April fools? I never thought I'd see that day." Yin's hand finds itself on the nape of his neck, ruffling his hair. "Don't worry about it, I'm sure you'll feel better when someone realizes that the Slytherin common room being turned upside down was your handiwork."

The Gryffindor laughs before coughing to hide his amusement, landing a soft punch on Yin's side.

"Is that an accusation?"

"No." Yin pokes War's hip i retaliation, eliciting a small giggle as the Gryffindor slapped his hand away. "I know for a fact that you're the only Gryffindor with access to the Slytherin common room."

"And whose fault is that?"

"Probably the Slytherin prefect."

"Yes he's very weak for these eyes." War looks up, fluttering his eyes at the said Slytherin prefect. "What would your housemates say?"

"They won't say anything. No one will suspect me of giving a lion the key to the snake den."

"Ah yes, perfect prefect Wong. You're breaking school rules."

Yin shrugs, pulling the Gryffindor closer in the process.

"I'm a prefect. Who's going to scold me?"

"Abuse of authority."

"Would you like me to take your snake den privilege away? I can always change the password."

"You wouldn't dare." War gasped dramatically, knowing full well that Yin would never do such a thing.

"I wouldn't. How else are you supposed to sneak in and steal away the stash of treats that my mother sends."

"They're delicious, you can't blame me."

"She sends you a box of your own, I'm pretty sure she sends you more."

"Are you complaining Anan?"

"Not at all, feel free to keep sneaking into the Slytherin dorm to steal my food."

War leans his head on Yin's shoulder as they stop at the edge of the lake.

"It's not really stealing if you know about it and you let me do it."

Yin chuckles. "I suppose not."

---

The weather was perfect for a day out by the lake, it was windy and not too hot. The sky was clear and overall it felt like a good old regular sunny day.

Except it wasn't because of a certain Griffyindor.

They spelled the ground to stay comfortable and pulled out the food baskets that Yin has somehow gotten from the kitchen. Bonnadol and Prom were seated side by side while Yin insisted on laying his head on War's thigh. Endlessly complaining about feeling sleepy until the Gryffindor relented.

It was towards the end of the day when they were already lazily lying around the grounds that the conversation picked up again.

"So Yin, I have a question." Bonnadol started and War immediately recognized his tone, it was one that said he wasn't up to no good.

"Shoot." Yin replied, distractedly playing with the hem of War's sleeve. "If you're going to ask for the password for the prefect's bathroom though, I'm not giving it to you."

"Not fair, War comes and goes there as he pleases."

"It's the War privilege." War said smugly.

"More like boyfriend privilege but okay." The other Gryffindor commented. "But anyway I wasn't going to ask that."

"Then get on with it."

"Bonnadol." War threatened, already knowing where this could be going.

"I know you and War are best friends." Nadol makes air quotes at the word. "But have you ever considered the maybe?"

Yin stops playing with the hem and War freezes.

"What maybe?"

"Stop pretending you don't know that the whole castle thinks you're together."

"Oh that maybe."

"Yes, that maybe."

"No." Yin clears his throat, standing up to sit cross-legged in the grass. "I didn't really think about it."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes." War ignores the slight twitch in his chest at those words as the Slytherin moves around in discomfort. "Why does it feel warm suddenly?"

"The weather gets weird like that sometimes." Bonnadol shrugs, eyeing War and widening his eyes as if telling him something.

"What?"

"How about you, did you ever think about it?"

"No." War croaks out, coughing to hide the wince at the sudden heat coming from his pants. "Never."

"Are you alright?" Yin's cool hands were suddenly on his forehead then his cheeks. "You're sweating."

"I'm fine." The Gryffindor replied, feeling another notch of the warmth and cursing Nadol in his head. "I need a moment."

War stands up hastily, slipping off his shoes and ignoring the question in Yin's eyes as he skips to the edge of the lake where his feet could touch the cool water.

He looked out to the clear lake, breathing deeply as he tried to will the warmth away by distracting himself as he walked deeper and deeper into the water. He stopped when he was knee-deep and stilled, enjoying the view of the giant squid's tentacles floating in and out of the water.

It could have been a few minutes or a few seconds but his thoughts were broken when he felt the water rippling, signaling that he had company.

"Are you going swimming?" Yin asks when they were side by side.

"Maybe. I should have thought about that awhile ago." War replied with a soft laugh.

There was silence, neither of them speaking as they watched the sun sink lower and lower in the sky.

"Bon told me something weird while you were gone."

"He did?" War refuses to look at the man beside him, opting to look ahead at the setting sun.

Yin hummed in acknowledgement. "Something about a spell he was making and that he finally perfected it."

"And?"

"And, I thought it was weird that I felt hot but only the lower part of my body felt like it was on fire. It explained a lot."

"Wow, you've been lying a lot all day?"

"So have you."

The Gryffindor freezes in place as the Slytherin turns him so that they are face to face, his hands comfortably dropping to his waist.

"I was not."

A lie. Warm.

"You're lying." Yin taps the fabric below his belt. "It's warm."

"And?"

"We're submerged in a lake. There's no reason for your pants to suddenly feel warm."

"Okay and?"

"I want you to answer the question again. Have you never thought about the maybe?"

War closes his eyes, laying the crown of his head on Yin's chest to avoid looking him in the eye.

"I have never."

A lie. Warm.

"You keep lying."

"Well what do you want me to say?"

"The truth."

"What? That I'm in love with my best friend and that I love it when he makes me my favorite breakfast plate every morning and that my insides feel like an explosion of butterflies everytime he does something amazing or even when he's just standing there laying on my lap reading a book? Or maybe that I blush when I remember that he keeps a stash of my favorite snacks in his trunk so I can sneak it out at night when I run out? Is that the truth you want?"

War breathes heavily, eyes widening and reevaluating if he accidentally consumed veritaserum but finding that he was in fact doing all this on his own will.

"Yes, that's the truth I want." Yin's hand settles on his shoulder and pulls him away from his chest, tilting his chin up and looking down at him with a sincere smile. "Because I love my bestfriend too, he's the best thing that's ever happened to me. When his eyes light up in the morning or when he laughs freely as he runs around in the castle. My heart skips a beat everytime he looks at me with those eyes and I'd willingly give him anything he wants if he asked for it. I love it when he sneaks in the Slytherin dorms at night, tip toeing to the foot as he sneaks out four chocolate bars-"

"I only sneaked out three." War protests with a pout.

"I love all of him and that's my truth. Now I feel like an idiot for taking so long to tell him that."

"If it makes you feel any better, I do think we're both idiots."

Yin laughs, circling his arm around War's shoulder and pulling him to a hug.

"I think so too."

War wraps his arms around the Slytherin's waist, burying his head in his shoulder and inhaling his best friend's comforting scent.

"It's okay, we'll be idiots together."

Their laugh rumbles in their chest as they swayed side to side in the water, whispering sweet words that they've always wanted to say to the other.

Only for the new lovers to scream in surprise as they get soaked with a giant splash of water coming from a suspiciously retreating tentacle.

"Did the giant squid just-?" Yin asks in surprise, flicking the water off of his hair before looking at War in surprise.

"Giant squid is bitter he doesn't have a boyfriend-" Another splash of water directed at War who quickly ducks behind the Slytherin, letting his boyfriend take the blow from the aquatic creature. "You missed!"

"Stop provoking-" Yin turns around, caging the giggling Gryffindor in his arms as another splash comes from the water. "-the squid."

"Who knew the giant squid could be so salty?"

Yin stops, looking at War's smug face. "I'll let it slide because you just called me your boyfriend."

"Good choice, you have to live with my puns for life."

"If I get you in return, I think I'll be fine."

"Only if you catch me first!"

Yin watches in adoration as the Gryffindor breaks out to a run in the water, wetting his already soaked clothes. He shakes his head before running after his laughing boyfriend.

"Hurry up Anan~"

"When I catch you, you sneaky lion cub!"

"If you catch me~" War shrieks in surprise as Yin breaks off to a quick run, navigating the water quickly and catching up with the Gryffindor.

"Got you." Yin grabs him by the waist and lifts him up and out of the water before spinning him around.

"Put me down!" War screams as Yin's hands tighten around his waist, effectively caging him in.

"Okay." The Slytherin puts him back on his feet but doesn't let him go, hands firmly glued around his waist as his chin settles on his neck. "I could get used to this."

"Me too." War replied happily. "Well until the giant squid decides to give us a bath again."

"Maybe if you stopped provoking it."

"Never."
