Work Text:
An unexpected consequence of the world not ending was the opportunity for Aziraphale and Crowley to learn new things about one another. Despite knowing each other for millennia, they'd spent most of it apart. Now their time together didn't need to be relegated to stolen moments.
One of the things Aziraphale had learned about Crowley was that the demon did not do well in the cold and grew sluggish in those months. He also became a good deal more needy, though Aziraphale politely refrained from commenting on it. 6,000 years and Aziraphale had almost never encountered Crowley in a frigid location, though he had noticed Crowley was grumpier in the winter during the years they were watching over Warlock. This level of vulnerability was different, though.
On this particular winter evening, Aziraphale had positioned himself on the couch in the bookshop rather than his usual armchair in anticipation of Crowley’s needs. As expected, after a while Crowley plopped down on the couch and curled up, fitting himself against Aziraphale’s side as he drew the blanket on his shoulders tighter around himself.
“‘M cold,” said Crowley.
Aziraphale set down the book he was reading and reached an arm around Crowley. “You seem to be cold quite often lately despite the bookshop being a perfectly reasonable temperature for humans.” He had even been keeping the shop at these temperatures during his open hours, which unfortunately resulted in more humans coming in to take shelter from the cold. It was a sacrifice he was reluctant but willing to make for Crowley.
“Cold-blooded,” said Crowley.
“Not in this form, you aren’t,” Aziraphale said.
“Feels like it.”
Aziraphale gave a small sigh. “I’ll go fix you some cocoa, then.”
Crowley made a noise of protest and grabbed at the angel when he tried to stand. “You’re warm.”
Aziraphale smoothed his hand over the blanket and it miraculously began to radiate heat. “Better?”
“Mm.”
Once in the kitchen, Aziraphale pulled a black thermos from where it had taken up residence in his cupboard and soon returned to Crowley with the warm drink. After sitting back down, Crowley snuggled back into his previous position and took a sip of the cocoa. The angel picked up his book and they sat in comfortable quiet until Crowley had finished. Crowley nudged Aziraphale gently and he set aside the thermos for him so Crowley didn’t have to change position and lose the warmth he was cocooned in.
It was a kind of privilege for Aziraphale to be the one taking care of Crowley for once. He didn’t think Crowley would allow it from anyone else, and that fact in itself was an expression of Crowley’s gratitude. Aziraphale stroked his fingers through Crowley’s hair. Crowley’s eyes slid shut and Aziraphale figured that if his beastly form had been a cat, he would be purring. Crowley drifted off like that and even when Aziraphale began to feel a bit peckish, he didn’t have the heart to disturb him.
