Work Text:

Tucked side by side in the still-warm crust of a calzone in the back of the pussy wagon, Normal was resting his head on Hermie's unburned shoulder.

"Do you think we're going to have to kill more people?" Hermie mused, glancing at Taylor up front holding The Human Gun.

Normal sighed, "Yeah. I mean, if Scary's dad's journal is anything to go off of that sounds like the family business honestly… not for you I guess."

"I wouldn't be so sure, family rumor has it that I've got some real weird ancestors too. Pretty sure I'm officially the weirdest but hey. Not everyone can sustain third degree cheese burns to fifty percent of their body and stay this handsome."

Normal lifted his head to turn and smiled at him and it made Hermie's heart stutter a little but then the smile faded to something softer, "Does it hurt?"

His hand came up as if wanting to touch but hesitated.

Hermie flipped the coin, heads, "Yeah. Alot."

"I could try to heal it?"

He shrugged and shook his head, "pretty sure this is max hp for me now, baby. Is it that bad to look at?"

Normal quickly shook his head, "no, of course not. I mean, it's just you y'know?"

Scary sat bolt upright in her calzone shooting them a sharp look, "I swear to god, if you two don't stop acting like you're the main couple in a coming of age story and shut up so I can sleep, the next time we're in battle you're on your own."

"Sorry, sorry," Normal said quickly, settling back in his spot, against Hermie's shoulder.

Scary settled back down with a mutter of something like, "... fucking gross…..-t's cute as-..."

They were quiet for a long time, Hermie honestly thought Normal was asleep until he started whispering.

"I'm sorry we left you, I know the apology doesn't do anything but You still deserve one," Normal told him.

"I doesn't do nothing," Hermie said, "besides, I'm glad you guys got out. You actually came back for me too. I didn't really expect that."

"Of course I came back for you Hermie, I promised," Normal laid his hand over Hermie's, stilling the ever fidgeting coin, feeling the warm metal pressed between their hands.

Hermie spent the briefest moment conflicted but then he laced his fingers with Normal's, letting the coin fall between them, face up, "Most people wouldn't but… thanks."

Normal just squeezed his hand gently, and settled in for the night. To his shock, Hermie found himself dozing off too.
